About Nocona Burgess
Acrylic painting
“I enjoy painting old portraits and traditional subjects, but in my own style. In a way, when I paint, my subjects speak to me.” Nocona Burgess is the great-great grandson of Comanche Chief Quanah Parker. His father, Ronald Burgess, was a tribal leader and an artist as well. Nocona accepted creativity and leadership as a way of life.
After a year at the University of Oklahoma, Nocona chose to attend the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe. At IAIA he learned more about Native traditional art forms and how they had evolved into more contemporary styles.
His first show was at Red Earth in Oklahoma City. In 2000 he and his brother, Quanah Parker Burgess (also an artist) were invited to a show in Holland, and from there traveled to Belgium and Germany.
“I know now I have come full circle and my painting is alive in my soul.”
