Braving the Elements for Their Art

Plein air painters brave heat, rain, ever-changing light and a host of other elements to find inspiration, and capture the energy and vibrancy of a scene.

Sorrel Sky Gallery is proud to host, for the third consecutive year, the 10th National Juried Members Show of the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM), the weekend of November 2-4, 2018.

“There’s a certain energy or pulse that can be seen and felt when viewing the works of plein air artists." - Shanan Campbell Wells

Plein air (from the French meaning “in the open air”) painters find inspiration not only from what they see but also from what they are literally experiencing while painting in the open air. Braving heat, rain, ever-changing light and a host of other elements to capture a scene requires both preparedness and adaptability. PAPNM organizes paint outs for its members at various locations throughout the year, encouraging a sense of camaraderie and support. The energy and vibrancy seen in plein air paintings are best experienced in person. Sorrel Sky Gallery is a strong supporter of plein air painting, representing several plein air painters, and welcomes the public to feel the immediacy that these works convey.

The opening reception and awards presentation will be held during First Friday Art Walk from 5:00pm to 7:30pm on November 2, 2018, at the gallery’s Santa Fe, New Mexico location, at 125 W Palace Ave. On Saturday, November 3, Judge of Awards, Ray Roberts, will give a painting demonstration from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The exhibition, which will include up to 150 works created within the last two years from award winners and other participants, continues through November 25, 2018.

Shanan Campbell Wells, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery shared her personal observation about plein air paintings. “There’s a certain energy or pulse that can be seen and felt when viewing the works of plein air artists. It’s as if you’re standing right beside the artist as they pause and momentarily step back, observing the scene before them.”
