Native American Artist Autumn Borts-Medlock Now Showing at Sorrel Sky

Santa Clara Pueblo potter marries traditional and contemporary with new bronze work

Sorrel Sky Gallery of Santa Fe is pleased to represent new work by award-winning Santa Clara Pueblo potter Autumn Borts-Medlock. Coming from a long lineage of Pueblo potters, Borts-Medlock was introduced to the craft at age five by her mother and grandmother, both respected Santa Clara potters. Like most traditional potters, Borts-Medlock digs and makes her clay as Pueblo potters have done for centuries.parrot and raven

In 2014, after a lifetime of working in clay, Borts-Medlock made a bold move. With her pottery in high demand –she finishes only 6-12 clay pots each year– and with limited clay deposits available, she began casting a few original clay pieces in bronze. Borts-Medlock’s limited edition bronze pots, tiles, and sculptures are each richly colored with various vibrant patinas applied by her sculptor husband, Jeremy Medlock, making each piece a unique work of art.

As a child, Borts-Medlock lived a life of contrasts, spending three seasons in her mother’s home in Santa Clara Pueblo and her summers living in Los Angeles. “Having grown up in two very different worlds, with one foot in modern California and the other foot in Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, I draw from two distinct cultures for my inspiration,” she said.

Shanan Campbell Wells, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery, offered, “In Autumn’s colorful bronze work, classic motifs and modern designs intermingle seamlessly.”

Borts-Medlock has received numerous awards at the Heard Museum Indian Market and Fair and at the Santa Fe Indian Market.Borts-Medlock, Autumn
