“Bridging Worlds - Human, Animal, Divine” with Star Liana York and Two-man show during Spanish Market with Lawrence Baca and Fred Ortiz

SANTA FE, NM: May 11, 2017; Sorrel Sky Gallery will host a one-woman show featuring Star Liana York on July 7, 2017, and a two-man show on July 27, 2017 featuring Lawrence Baca and Fred Ortiz.

“Bridging Worlds - Human, Animal, Divine,” opening during First Friday Art Walk on July 7, 2017 spotlights the bronze works of renowned sculpture Star Liana York. Artist reception is from 5:00-7:30 pm at Sorrel Sky Gallery’s downtown location at 125 W. Palace Ave. The show continues throughout the month of July. Star’s range of subjects reflect her boundless interest in the people, animals, environment and culture of the Southwest. However, for Star, inspiration is drawn from the world as a whole. From history, the present day and future expectations; deepening her understanding through patient observation, attentive listening, and then accepting what her surroundings are saying. As she assimilates, she creates bridges between worlds. Bridging the worlds between the human, the animal, the divine. In her own words, “When a character emerges from a work I am sculpting, I feel touched at a deeply intimate, subconscious level. It is the essence in a work of art that makes it intensely personal and entirely universal at the same time.”

Each artist finds inspiration in their heritage and the rich local cultural of Santa Fe. Artist reception is from 5:00-7:30 pm at Sorrel Sky Gallery’s 125 W. Palace Avenue location.

Lawrence Baca is a multi-talented, award winning jewelry designer, born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico. While taking a piece from a design concept to an actual finished work, Lawrence is ready to adapt and evolve. “Nothing is perfectly symmetrical, but it is all so beautiful. To have found something that I love to do … making people happy with what I make … I count it as a gift.”

Fred Ortiz was born and raised in Nambe, North of Santa Fe, New Mexico. When Ortiz creates a bronze vessel or cross, he usually starts with a turquoise stone that he likes and then builds the vessel or cross around it. He does not make molds and then cast editions, but rather makes one piece, casts it and then creates a different piece. “The basic difference between my work and the traditional way of making art pieces, is that I make all of my pieces originals.”

Shanan Campbell Wells, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery, looks forward to July’s events. “Having Star, Lawrence and Fred with us for these two shows will add to the dynamic nature of the summer season, for locals and visitors alike.”
