For those that love the outdoors and find inspiration in the ever-changing light across a landscape, plein air painting is the perfect pairing. “En plein air,” is a French term meaning “in the open air” or “outside.” Painting outside gained popularity the 1800’s when portable paints and material became more readily available, and people were becoming more interested in observing and enjoying the unaffected beauty of nature. Today this movement to paint outside has experienced a resurgence. With a desire to return to the outdoors, stay in touch with their surroundings, preserving scenes, capturing forgotten places, communities of like minded people are gathering, exploring, and painting together. PAPNM is one such community. Sorrel Sky Gallery, a strong supporter of plein air painting, representing several plein air painters, is honored to be hosting this and future PAPNM events.

Drawing top artists from across the country, this event showcases their best works from the over the last two years.  The ten Master Signature Artists of PAPNM have been invited to participate, as well as Signature Artists. This year’s Juror of Selection for the show includes American Landscape painter David Ballew, Sorrel Sky Gallery owner Shanan Campbell Wells, and last year’s Best of Show Winner Roger Williams. The Judge of Awards is Bob Rohm, Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Oil Painters of America and the Outdoor Painters Society.

Gallery owner Shanan Campbell Wells is a proud advocate of plein air painting. “Plein air painting has been regaining popularity in the last several years. People are realizing that it’s a current movement, one that’s going to endure. Whether actually painting outdoors, or collecting the works of artists that do, plein air painting is here to stay. The PAPNM show, and its many activities, are proof of that. It’s a privilege to promote and host their events.”
