Painter offers instruction in weekend intensive focusing on portraying animal emotions

Sorrel Sky Gallery will host the workshop, Painting Animals with Emotion, with artist Linda St. Clair in Durango, Colorado on Friday, February 5 through Sunday, February 7. St. Clair will begin each day with a painting demonstration and offer instruction in the use of value, color and brushwork to bring the personality of each animal alive on the canvas. Designed for the beginner to more experienced artists, the workshop offers individualized instruction. The cost of the 3-day workshop is $395 with single day participation available.

An award winning artist, St. Clair is an innovator who creates animal portraits that explore the personalities of creatures great and small. Raised on a Tennessee farm, she observed daily the mannerisms and attitudes of barnyard animals. Since then, she has traveled to the North Pole to study polar bears, Africa to observe elephants and zebras, and Yellowstone National Park to watch grizzly bears. After each trip to view her subjects, she returns to her Santa Fe studio with photographs and sketches where each painting is completed during a single, intense session.

St. Clair says she wants her work to “tell a story, to make us feel a connection with the subject, to remind us all that upon closer inspection, animal emotions and relationships are not unlike our own.”
