I chose my focal point because I wanted a low chance of a big shot rather than a good chance of a boring shot . When I looked into the camera’s screen from the then deserted wateringhole . i could not believe it and I just hoped that the focus was pin sharp - not easy when the head of the giraffe is much further away from the camera than the hoofs.

The focus was fine although I have no other photograph from the series. By the time the giraffe arrived the sun was getting low - and the camera was pointing that way , so this was not an easy file to work with - I wanted detail in both the giraffe and the sky .

The end result is surreal and then the next problem was to find a name . I knew I had a cracking picture after I breathlessly picked myself up from the arid ground immediately after this brief encounter. The angle of view and the composition is close to perfect and that is presumably what engages the buyers of the work. There are generic giraffe pictures and then there is this. It transcends the banal and I am proud to have taken it.

Amboseli is the perfect canvas on which to tell stories because it is flat, elemental and free of distractions. The lack of noise emboldens this image – it is unequivocally all about a giraffe – albeit a large adult one, moving at a fair speed. The picture could have been taken anytime over the last 10,000 years.

There is another helpful component to this photograph in that the soft early morning light offers a calm and detailed portrayal of this majestic animal. If the giraffe was harshly sunlit – from either behind or from in front, I think the image would be too busy and have far less soul. As it is, this is all about the surreal subject matter, not the real weather.

I will always remember the first time I showed a big print of this to anyone. It was in Upper East Side, New York at a famous French restaurant. The owner – who has long been a reputable collector of photographs – was spellbound and I was humbled as he gathered his friends and family around the print. I trust the guide and ranger who were with me and they trust me. More importantly, however, Craig, the world’s most celebrated big tusker, trusts me and I, in turn, trust him. This trust triangle allowed me to work on the ground no more than seven feet from Craig who was advancing towards me. Three years ago, or indeed, even a year ago, I could never imagine using a 35mm lens to take a portrait of such a giant of an animal - more mammoth then elephant.

During Covid 2020, I have spent about 10 days with Craig and that has certainly helped to build a mutual understanding of each other’s behaviour. I see this image as the end validation of an investment of time, not just in Craig, but also the good people of the Kenyan Wildlife Service. I want to thank Daniel Kipkosgei, the Senior Park Warden at Amboseli, for his support and encouragement throughout the summer.

Of course, there is a huge amount of fortune involved, most notably the clear sky allowing Kilimanjaro to add a layer of narrative and also the fact that we found Craig that day in open ground. I would estimate odds of that double to be around 10/1.

I guess I still had to do my bit and I probably held my nerve for longer than I expected as the elephant advanced. This was, however, a team effort and everyone played their role - Craig most of all.
Time for a cigar. ~ David the good news on conservation in specific areas of East Africa and we must embrace good news, even if it sits uncomfortably with populist headline narrative. The elephant population in Amboseli is thriving. In the last 12 months, over 130 elephants have been born.

Some iconic senior citizens of the ecosystem - notably Tim - have sadly passed away from old age, but none have been lost to poaching in 2020. Indeed, none have been lost to poaching in over six years. Consequentially, the elephant community here is as large as it has been for many years. Huge credit must be given to the KWS and NGOs such as Big Life and Tusk.⁣
⁣
Amboseli is a paragon of conservation models and what has happened here can happen elsewhere. Seasoned rangers who have seen it all, can be forgiven for being somewhat indifferent to animal encounters, but when we found this mother with her twins born during Covid 19, they ordered me to stop and document it. This is true whether the subject matter be a line of military tanks in the desert or a line of elephants. However, I do know what does not work - stepping back to fit everything in then using a degree of magnification - this results in a lack of immersion and a great deal of wasted space in the frame. The scale is poorly conveyed as is the sense of place. That is why we don’t really see a horse race shot well from the perpendicular unless the leading horses are singled out rather than the whole field.

I shot this image on a 20mm wide angle lens - that’s almost a fisheye and I think we nailed it. Here are the giants of the planet looking like ants and the “big sky” reminds us of the fact that we are just “bit players” in a far bigger story. I was only 20 yards from the middle of the group and the lens allowed for 22 elephants to be sharp in the image. The negative space of the sky works as it’s big enough to really inform. On the basis of this alone, I fancy that this image might have struck a chord with him. I have been seeking an abstract image like this for some time and have consistently failed partly because the zebra is so skittish and this has prevented me from getting close enough to play with the patterns.

But the bigger issue is that if all the zebras are on the same piece of at land, as is usually the case, one animal tends to block the body of those behind. As I thought about the riddle, it dawned on me that the odds of success would narrow if I could find zebras stacked on a hill. This rules out the majority of locations because of their flat topography.

Lewa was therefore going to be my best chance of an outstanding image – there are hills and steep areas where the zebra can congregate. Of course there is no assurance that zebras will be in these areas at the same time as my camera lens. But the more time I employed the greater the chance of success.

I had then to get lucky with the formations. The grevy zebra, for which Lewa is renowned, also have such distinctive and pristine stripes that are thinner than other breeds to the south. The stripes are also very much white on a black background as opposed to black on a white coat and this works well.

When this image presented itself in my viewfinder, I could not quite believe my luck. Thank goodness I remembered to press the shutter. Every grevy in the world has distinctive markings and this image makes that point with a clarity that will be difficult to beat.

David up close to the preconceived vision I had on arrival on the Zambezi River. My goal was a full-on face-off portrait of a hippopotamus, which emphatically conveyed both the enormity of a bull and also the primeval bone structure of his face. Hippos are half contemporary African wildlife,
half dinosaur, and 100 percent lethal when compromised.

I wanted to get close and low, but with thousands of hippos on the Zambezi, this required either a large dose of bravery or a momentarily compliant animal. In most cases, hippos will drop their heads and go underwater if approached—they are mammal submarines with little tolerance for humans. Working on the Zambezi can be extremely frustrating, but the world does not need any more banal long-distance hippo shots from a boat—in which there is neither intensity nor immersion.

I had one card in my hand: the help and support of the best guide on the lower Zambezi. To him, each hippo on his stretch of the river has a personality and, in a few cases, even a name. Over the years, he has become familiar with many individual male hippos that to the rest of us look identical. There was one hippo—Dexter—who showboated and was not intimidated by boats or humans.

My guide recommended that I lie on the other bank 30 yards across the creek and wait until I grabbed Dexter’s attention. Luckily, my presence had
no impact, but the angle required me
to crawl even closer through mud and water. As Dexter moved toward me, it was not easy to think about single-point focus on the camera, composition, or exposure from the sun. It was a highly intense five seconds, but I got the shot.

David Yarrow

<div There are no glamour camps and very few visitors. But therein lies its charm and allure. It was a great thrill to spend time in Mana with David Pocock – flanker for the Australian Rugby team – and his partner – Emma. Dave was born in Zim and when he hangs up his famous boots, conservation in his native country will no doubt become a large part of his life. It was quite a revelation to find that this colossus of a man, was able to correctly pair every bird sound with the right bird. He even has a bird sound app on his iPad. Life is full of surprises.

The rainy season had just finished and so it was still very green in Mana Pools, making it a challenge to come home with something special. With such an illustrious assistant, I felt under a little pressure to perform and until Sunday morning, the cupboard was distinctly bare.

We focused on one pool and one enormous hippo, but I just could not get close enough or low enough.

Plan A – working with 25 feet extensions poles, which Dave – being a strong lad – held steady for long periods of time – was fruitless. Plan B was simply to be brave and that morning at 6.30 am, I managed to crawl within 15 yards of the hippo. When he surfaced and mock charged me, it all came together perfectly. Thank goodness – by getting it wrong, we learnt how to get it right. ~ David Yarrow

<div The image of a large adult wolf walking purposefully towards my camera, whilst life in the bar continued as normal behind him, became coveted. I was flattered that the last available edition sold for $100,000 at Sotheby’s a few years later. I think the price paid was a tribute to the magnificence of the wolf as much as it was to the authenticity of the concept.

There was a compositional balance to that image and whilst the barman and the customers were way out of the focal range of the camera lens, their anonymity added to the narrative and didn’t detract the eye from the wolf. Focus can deliberately exclude as well as include, and in layered images such as the Wolf of Main Street, this approach works well as it directs the viewer without losing the wider story. In retrospect, the photograph was a pivotal moment in my career and the barman that day - Thomas Rosenthal - has become a dear friend and is now part of the DY production team in America.

We borrowed from the depth offered by that saloon in many sets around the world over the next few years. Whilst I am all for fresh challenges, if a concept works, I tend to go back. In 2021 my ambition was to leverage my long-term relationship with Kevin Richardson - The Lion Whisperer - to create something special in his lion sanctuary north east of Pretoria. The project was delayed by COVID as South Africa only really opened up in the autumn, but this gave the original premise time to marinate in my mind. I wanted to glorify the lion’s splendour - as did Kevin - but I also wanted to build a much wider story around the key subject.

As we spitballed a few ideas around, two governing principles became clear. The first was that the lion could only be on set if I was in a cage and no one, other than Kevin, was in his domain. This is not just for safety reasons, it is also because we had to remove any conceivable distraction for Vayetse, my go to lion within Kevin’s care. The second conclusion was that we should build a set predicated on compositional mathematics before anything else. In other words, I knew my lens and camera settings before we started construction, not on the week of the shoot. There was a great deal of creative processing long before we arrived in South Africa as this was very much a picture that was going to be made, not taken.

In building the story, my instincts were to play on the vibe of a Paris Catwalk - after all, we had access not just to any cat to strut down our catwalk, but the King of Africa; a magnificent adult male lion. I have been to enough fashion shows in my life to know that it’s a theatre and the attendees tend to be united in their passion and behaviour. There may be more cultural refinement in the Paris fashion shows than at a club football match, but both theatres attract collective tribes.

This prompted me to indulge with the idea that we should incorporate a tribal crowd into the set - albeit a literal tribe not a metaphorical one. We were certainly in the right part of the world, the heart land of the Zulu people. The largest ethnic group and nation in South Africa, with an estimated population of 10-12 million, was within a morning’s drive of where we were shooting.

My plan was to bring around 100 adult Zulus to the set - all dressed in traditional attire and armed with spears and shields. The word went out and we had no shortage of applicants. With each and every member of the cast, we discussed whether there were any cultural appropriation issues in asking them to dress traditionally. As I have found with Native Americans, they said it would be a celebration of their culture; of which they were rightly proud.

To many the word “Zulu” evokes memories of Michael Cain in the 1964 British epic war film depicting the Battle of Rorke’s Drift between the British Army and the Zulus. Luckily that battle was 140 years ago and the script has changed. The Zulus on set could not have been more cooperative with this Brit and there was a carnival mood at breakfast despite many of them having been picked up at home at 2 am. It was one of the more memorable mornings of my career to be able to immerse myself in the uplifting energy of Zulu life.

In 2021, I wonder whether artists are smart to retain some secrecy or mystique as to how they create their work? It is a dilemma for us because whilst we like to show behind the scenes footage, we also recognise that less is sometimes more. We are also conscious of those who may think - despite Kevin’s global credibility - that we have either exploited a lion or endangered a human in the effort to create art.
Both could not be further from the truth and so on this occasion we decided it would be worthwhile to give some insights into the picture’s creation.

Firstly, everything in the picture was shot exactly as you see it - there was no green screen and no studio involved. The key was to shoot over a three- day period and hope to find three early mornings with almost identical light. If the weather was inconsistent over this period we had a problem, but we were blessed with cloud at 7 am for each of the days and cloud is much more forgiving than a rapidly rising sun.
At 7.15 am on the first morning, we photographed the Zulus in and around the temporary stand structure and then rushed the raw file to Johannesburg so that we could get a life size canvas of that scene returned to set that night. The tennis court size canvas was then erected vertically on set behind the catwalk. This way we could then introduce our cat to the scene with the Zulus very much present, but only two dimensionally.

The next morning, at the identical time, Vayetse walked down the catwalk as part of his regular morning exercise with Kevin. The canvas of the Zulu crowd formed the backdrop I needed and meanwhile I was in a cage allowing me to film directly towards him.

This is where Kevin excels and within a few minutes I had what I wanted - the regal Vayetse owning the catwalk. To watch him work with his lions is one of the great privileges of my job. It is one of the wonders of the world.

Later that day we worked through what we had and by dawn the following morning I knew where to place the lead extras - in front of the stand but just behind Vayetse. We chose those star extras with great care and both girls played their role well. The weather also cooperated and the jigsaw became complete.

This was an ambitious production effort demanding precision, speed of thought and experience. The end result is better than I could ever have asked for and I thank each and every member of a big cast and crew. It is the most basic of existences and the only material source of employment is the cattle camps. In 2014, I filmed near the town of Yirol in a camp on a Nile tributary, but this time I wanted to travel further into the interior and find an even bigger camp on the way to Rumbek. My premise was to play on scale and my leaning was always to go bigger not smaller. I am always greedy in the field. The Dinka tribe are the world’s tallest people, their cattle camps are the biggest of their kind and the cattle horns are Jurassic. This is a place to play on the word “big”.

My picture, Mankind, had novelty factor because it delivered such an emphatic sense of scale and place. Whilst I was nervous of treading old ground, familiarity is a friend not a foe, that’s why we often use the same talent in our storytelling. I needed to go one step further than I had in 2014, without losing any small individual stories within the image. My sense was that there needed to be even more of a visual overload in the frame and I found it difficult in my preconceptions to escape from the word “panoramic”. The local chiefs and the head of police knew where to take me and my security detail knew how to keep me safe. I would go into largely unchartered land where the Dinka had established a camp of over 10,000 cattle.

I have often thought that a photographer in the last eight years would go and try and take their own version of Mankind, but I haven’t seen any. Every week I see monochrome photographs of the big elephants of Kenya, many embracing a ground up approach and then the prints are framed in black wood with a white mount, edition number on left, signature on right. All come with a nice little narrative. Some of this work is excellent, but I think the market may be a little saturated. I am reminded of Warren Buffett’s wonderful prompt, “if you see a bandwagon, you have missed it”.

But no work is coming from South Sudan and I think I know why. The simple question is where on earth does a first-time visitor start on the logistics? With East African wildlife, all a photographer needs are a jeep, a guide and some nice camera gear and away they go. Sundowners in their $400 a night camp at 6.30pm and then 1000 photos to download. I am not sure Anthony Bourdain would have approved.

South Sudan is a very different gig and the discomfort of staying in a room costing $5 a night and eating a meal for $1 whilst security costs $2000 a day, is compensated by the comfort of knowing that there is a chance of authenticity. For an artist that is pure gold. I question whether anything is truly novel these days; all creation is influenced by what we have seen elsewhere, but this terrain is not well trodden.

I was excited to arrive in South Sudan and even more excited to leave when the job was done. In Kenya, my emotions are much more compressed because it is so mainstream and that is something with which I am increasingly uncomfortable. In my journey, I need to push on and accept challenges and this last week was certainly one.

There is about a 40-minute window for this kind of image; basically, the time between the cows returning to camp in late afternoon and half an hour before sunset. The hope, of course, is that there is direct sunlight. On a dull day with full cloud cover, the light can’t bounce off the smoke quite like it does here.

There was some maths involved in determining the best height for the ladder that travelled 500 miles with us; too low and there would not be enough depth and too high and we would lose immersion. I know not to fear long thin images, after all, The Bills is our most popular photograph of the last two years.

And so, to the name, The New Testament. It struck me that evening in the cradle of Mankind that the sensory overload in front of me was a metaphor. As our world spins ever faster, with kids addicted to celebrity culture and social media, students cancelling history and adults divided on so many issues, the world of the Dinka cattle camps has never really spun. There is continuity, simplicity and happiness. The scene I saw has been replicated for 2000 years. Most of us don’t know what world will exist for our children, but the Dinka do.

~ David Yarrow

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1213/7518/files/David-Yarrow-sorrel-sky-gallery-Photographic-Print-The-New-Testament-BW.jpg?v=1723755829
cheetahs
Cheetahs

Cheetahs

Namibia, 2022

LARGE

52” x 102” Unframed 67” x 117” Framed Edition of 12

STANDARD

34” x 67” Unframed 49” x 82” Framed Edition of 12

Most artists are on journeys to unknown destinations; it is the journey itself that is important. The second is that I can get out and about and set up remotes without infringing upon any laws or endangering myself. Third, the elephants in Amboseli, just like in Tsavo, can be very big. The girl from the Democratic Republic of Congo committed herself admirably to the task and at the end of seventy two hours they had forged a female bond that is implicit in this shot. The final image is a result of creating a scene rather than recording a scene and this, in itself, demands a great deal of cognitive processing. Staged imagery demands exhaustive attention to detail, exactly because they are staged. The photographer cannot really blame nature for a flopped shot, as the dynamic of the random walk of nature is largely eliminated.

I was due a little self-indulgence this summer after my trip to North Korea and so several months ago, we started to plan a staged shoot in the vast wilderness of the Namib Desert – surely one of the most visually intoxicating locations in the world. My concept was to build a fully stocked bar in the desert and then to fill it with a hotch potch of disconnected characters. Mad Max was set to meet Burning Man. The composition had to be painterly and perfectly backlit – and perfect lighting in the desert is no easy task.

I knew enough fixers and friends in Namibia for the project to gain momentum. In particular, I had worked before with Namibia’s leading conservationists – Rudie and Marlice van Vuuren – who alongside many other notable endeavours, look after orphaned big cats. Their Na’an/ Ku Se sanctuary outside Windhoek is world renowned and they are something of a golden couple in this vast but sparsely populated country. The Dinka tribe are the world’s tallest people, their cattle camps are the biggest of their kind and the cattle horns are Jurassic. I was excited to arrive in South Sudan and even more excited to leave when the job was done. In other parts of Africa, my emotions are much more compressed because it is so mainstream and that is something with which I am increasingly uncomfortable. Yes, it was a commercial shoot with one of the world’s most famous women, but I think it goes beyond that and the image will be coveted by collectors. It grabs the eye and then holds it in a vice-like grip. Everything about the work is viscerally powerful.

I look back on that day with great emotion and there are so many people to thank. None more so than the British icon that is Cara Delevingne She is - of course - stunning, but she is also authentic and intelligent and couples this with admirable work ethic. Furthermore, on this day, she was incredibly brave and fittingly did not "crack under pressure". This image is not manipulated - there were five yards between her and the lion. At no stage did she show tension or anxiety and that made my job so much easier.

I think a key to the image was the reasonably powerful directional late afternoon sunlight, as the shadows on both Cara and the lion are so consistent that the authenticity of the image cannot be questioned. One single photograph is unlikely to have an expansive enough narrative and often film footage is a more effective medium. Strong artists such as Nick Brandt have taken some evocative stills, but much of the work I see, including my own, has left me unmoved. ⁣
⁣
The river crossings in normal years attract huge numbers of jeeps laden with cameras and a rather undignified dash for pole position accompanies the start of each crossing. I have not enjoyed these experiences over the years as I find it something of a chaotic scrum. The quiet serenity of the Serengeti is interrupted by the noise of 500 camera motor drives each being operated with the finger pressed firmly down on the shutter release. It’s akin to the paparazzi greeting a celebrity exiting a night club. ⁣
⁣
But it’s all rather different in 2020 as traffic numbers are down 90% and there is room to be on your own and avoid others. Last week my guide gambled on a likely crossing point and at first light, we crawled down the bank to the river’s edge with a view to shooting at 90 degrees to the crossing, not the 180 so often chosen. I knew it could be a long wait and I even took a book with me to kill time. That was a little naive given crocs and hippos hang out in the same area - this was clearly no library. I never turned a page. ⁣
⁣
But after a couple of hours, I had my moment. There is even a semblance of order to what is normally the most chaotic scene imaginable and the olympic leap from the lead wildebeest certainly made the assignment successful. I do need some light to play with to help my depth of focus. It’s taken me 30 odd years, but in crocodile years that is nothing. These monsters were around long before man and can live to 100 years old.

Big crocs are not easy to capture in a way that conveys their enormity, their primeval menace or indeed their textural magnificence. But this image works and when I saw it in large size at the printers in LA, my heart skipped a beat. It has been worth the wait. I think we pushed a few boundaries here.

The picture was made as opposed to taken as I had a preconceived idea of what I was trying to do. The starting point was my acceptance that head on images of crocodiles struggle as there is never enough depth of field with a telephoto to do them justice. The teeth can be in focus, but then probably not their eyes and certainly not their back or tail. I don't like to have my focal point half way back in an image - it creates a tension point if the nearest point of a portrait is out of focus. A head on portrait fails to convey length and length is the key variable.

I knew I needed to work at 90 degrees, with the croc perpendicular to the camera. I also wanted to be low and close and I wanted a big crocodile - why on earth photograph a small one? If almost all of the crocodile was the same distance from the camera, there could be a colossal amount of information in the image.

Our research - and we did a great deal - led us to one place. The key was that the river had to be narrow, as for safety reasons I could not work from the same bank as a 12 foot crocodile - that could be my last assignment. The narrow Grumeti river in Tanzania offers chances and there is one 200-yard section with some enormous crocs on the south bank with a north bank just 20 yards away. The steep bank deters crocodiles on the north bank and that was what I needed to be able to work without fear and for the camera angle to be low. I needed to be at the same height as the croc - give or take a meter.

The image was taken late in the day and the angle of the late sun gave me every chance for a clean picture - almost all the background was in heavy shadow and three stops underexposed.

My preoccupation as an artist is to be original and creative.
