All are needed, as I really wanted the room to be full of characters without losing the detail of the bar. After all, that was the reason we were there. This period saloon scene in Durango, Colorado was a big ask and I don’t think I could have made this a couple of years ago. I sense that I have learnt from my mistakes and my work has improved in dimly lit rooms like this one. This is so much more of a challenge than photographing an elephant in Kenya and the stakes are much higher. With the talent involved, we had at least $100,000 of daily rates on site, I guess it’s a case of “go big or go home”.

It is a high risk game, but this kind of shoot excites me more these days. There were so many moving parts and so many talented people not to let down. I was exhausted when I hit my bed, but I think we achieved what we set out to do - a character rich, wild west bar scene filling every inch of the frame. It is also not a scene in any bar, but the Diamond Belle saloon in Durango, Colorado. Perhaps the most authentic and celebrated 1890 bar left in the Wild West.

The key was to compose the scene with the most menacing looking characters closest to the camera. To be greeted by an overtly territorial crew with menace and attitude.

But for the story to work, two things had to coalesce as one - the characters and the interior. Surely the further off the beaten track we travel, the greater the chance of being the outsider.

This is a frame that exhausts every inch available in the camera and that was my intent. She can play a badass very well and that was her ascribed role. It is not easy for everything to come together in such a tight setting as one tension spot can ruin the whole pastiche. It’s akin to camels and the eye of the needle. The wolf ’s paw on this occasion came very close to Cindy’s shot glass, but we got away with it.

The wolf is actually a domestic dog breed called tamaskan - he is not 100% wolf, but that mattered little, as he merely added to the sense of trespass. The rich “wild west” characters speak for themselves and every face is the right face. For those that own a bad ass bar, this is the badass picture to adorn the wall. We have been holding off for the right occasion to release this and now is the time.
There are no other shots that worked that day; it is just such a difficult concept to pull off as the focus is everything and there is no margin for error.

We hope that this picture will raise another $750,000 over time for a great cause. Based in the town of Ingomar, Montana (population 12), it is a long way from anywhere. In fact, there is no store or fuel within a 45-minute drive north, south, east or west. It truly is the “last chance saloon”.

My fixer in Montana spoke to the owner - a cowboy rather splendidly called “Boots” - and he agreed that we could use the interior and exterior for filming on a Monday and Tuesday in the early summer - when the bar itself would normally be closed. Permits were also secured with the local authorities to allow us to film in the bar with a tamed bear.

I did a reconnaissance the previous Saturday - a good three hour round trip from Billings, Montana - to check the light and the bar’s interior. It was clear that there was potential to tell a “wild west” story, but equally I would have very little depth of field in any photograph I took - the window light was okay, but not overly generous. I was drawn to the number of animal heads on the wall and in particular the massive bison in the top corner seemed a great prop to play with, albeit I needed a composition to show it off.

Roxana Redfoot from Dallas, Texas is a star - she is smart, as well as striking and can play any character role. On this occasion, her role was within her comfort zone - a sassy and smokingly sexy saloon bar maid with a no-nonsense approach to over eager customers. The customer, Adam - a 1000 lb brown bear - is not normally aggressive but working with him is far from easy - as he does not speak English. Roxanna showed no anxiety and was theatrical and focused from start to finish. Her eyes had to tell a story.

For my part, I had a preconception and an image in my head. It was vital to me that both the bear’s head and Roxy’s head had to be equidistant from my camera lens - which probably meant that they had to be looking at each other. I knew that we would have a limited window of opportunity as Adam was not going to play the role for long - he gets bored easily. Luckily the rabbit behind the bar kept him focused for longer than I expected.

The vast majority of shots did not work for one reason or another - my focus, the bear’s head position or the interaction between the two characters. A picture of the bar’s clientele evolved daily in my mind as I wandered around this old town thinking of ideas. I knew we could have no bland characters, everyone had to earn their right to be a thief, a gambler or indeed a lady of the night.

We then had a stroke of luck. One of the team was passing by a store in town and saw an old Jules Verne type diver’s outfit. It was extremely heavy and apparently had not been touched since 1972.

It was time for a charm offensive with the owner and ultimately, I wore the poor fellow down. My fondness for him is not a self-serving emotion derived from being allowed to shoot at this club, nor is it simply because he continues to work as hard as he does to be charming and efficient to a daily clientele that in peak summer can exceed 800 covers. It is more because Le Club 55 has retained a unique vibe for decades. That is some trick for a famous restaurant and one achieved by so few. The irony is, that given the bar sits at an altitude of 9200 feet, the alleged climb would be considerably shorter than most. The saloon has the whiff of vice and is probably all the better for it. It was the most common form of entertainment - especially if those cowboys could neither read nor write. There was also, of course, a transactional element to the activity; money would meaningfully change hands.

The problem in Wyoming, however, was the state outlawed gambling in 1901. But the iconic Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole never really bothered with that too much. In the 1940s, customers entering the bar were greeted with roulette craps and poker tables throughout the main room. Meanwhile, big stakes poker games were held in the back. It was a little Las Vegas as much as it was a watering hole and the use of space was a brazen affront to the law that played to the lore of the loosely governed wild west.

In 1951, Wyoming’s gambling crack down spread to the last stronghold - The Cowboy Bar - and when the bust came, early one Tuesday morning, there were apparently over 100 slot machines in operation. But fabulous stories of this illicit gambling den remain for us all to enjoy.
