The area is so remote that we doubt it has been used as a film location before, certainly not with an American icon as the lead player. The only traffic was the occasional oil worker or perhaps someone that was totally lost. The next big event north of here is the Canadian border and that’s some 300 miles away. It is not a place to run out of gas.

Cindy makes the picture for sure. The styling is perfect and there is a such a good energy cowgirl chic in her manner. This was the intent in the preconception - the two companions were enjoying the freedom of the vastness of the American West.

The sense of place is palpable. This is the America that so many know and love, with its long roads running to the horizon with either side exuding a simple sense of calm and solitude. Sunset Boulevard emblematic of Hollywood - it needed to be familiar to all and have some depth. After a great deal of walking up and down, we chose a spot 200 yards east of the entrance to Chateau Marmont, because the billboards looking west were large and well positioned and the hotel and the hotel sign are so iconic. The bend in the road also helped give the frame a compositional balance that I could not find on other sections - such as Sunset Plaza. In my head it was always going to be a wide angle shot.

To shut the road down meant shooting first thing on a Sunday morning - which worked as we knew the best light would be sunrise if we were shooting towards the Pacific. Equally, I did not want the sun to rise too much as it would be tough on both the wolf and the model’s eyes. Of course, the model was not your run of the mill model - it was Alessandra Ambrosio - one of the world’s most photographed women. She has a very special look and is so easy to work with.

The photograph is as I wanted - very LA, very West Hollywood and jammed with reference points. It’s a little crazy, a little La La Land, but that was the goal. Most of all, to the best of my knowledge, it’s authentic. class="single-collections-page__info">

When we undertook our first “through the car windscreen” project 18 months ago in Monument Valley, Arizona, we had no idea that it would be the pilot to a series that has now taken us onto Montana, Chicago and LA. The idea of a layered narrative using great American vistas has worked and the concept is now known. Best of all no one can really copy us.

In January 2020 we returned again to Montana, partly because we have a network of local contacts and fixers that deliver both logistical precision on the ground and access to the best locations, but mostly because the canvas on which to tell stories is so rich in potential. Montana does stand out for us.

Our focus this time was the historic frontier mining town of Butte. I have long had an obsession with the frontier settlements and Butte is visually one of the best because it straddles a hill. Between 1900 - 1950 the town represented a microcosm of final frontier life in the Wild West. It was a hill that was once so rich in minerals, that Butte became known locally as “The Richest Hill in the World”.

My readings on the town told me of a storied past of felons and outlaws - there were both murders and hangings on a regular basis. It is such an iconic stretch of road that has played host to Hollywood stars and their cars for generations. The stretch heading west from Chateau Marmont to the Sunset Plaza is a rich feast for filmmakers, framed on either side with enormous billboards. Sunset Boulevard takes people on their own American dream - it is difficult not to feel energised when driving on it.

But it is far from easy to photograph here - it is a busy highway and the only time it can be closed down for filming tends to be early on a Sunday morning. Furthermore, to be able to use wolves in the car – integral to the theme of the series - West Hollywood was out of bounds as they do not allow the use of exotic animals in outdoor filming. Hollywood, however, does and the boundary line is right by Chateau Marmont.

To an extent, this made our choice of location relatively straightforward. Including the Chateau billboards or the Chateau itself would locate the image emphatically. The Castle On Sunset, as it is now affectionately known, is notorious - conjuring up imagery of sex, drugs and general bad behaviour. This is not a place that lends itself to reserved or quiet weekends. I saw a narrative that played to this reputation - and this demanded a frame that was both suggestive and sexy.

Alessandra Ambrosio is synonymous with the Victoria’s Secret brand. We had scouted the area intensely and knew our angles, our light and most of all the landowners.

The premise was to style the set as if we were indeed in the late 1950s and we recognised that we had a strong backdrop, as Roy’s Cafe is one of the treasure trove authentic landmarks of Route 66. From Roy’s looking east, the Mother Road stretches straight to the horizon in a way that plays to
our preconceptions of Americana road trips. Amboy has a tiny runway strip and towards the end of the day, when the traffic is lighter, a good pilot can flirt with the tarmac of Route 66. I needed
a pilot whom I could trust and I found him in Greg Caldwell, who slightly reminded me of the heroic crop spraying pilot from the movie Independence Day. One of the most coveted estates in the family was Dalness in Glen Etive, near Glencoe. Before WW2, Ian Fleming spent many days in this most dramatic of locations and this did not escape the attention of British Director Sam Mendes, who used the very same estate and glen as the location for the climax of his 2012 Bond movie - Skyfall. This is Scotland at its untamed best.

The road off the A82 from Glencoe to Dalness attracts camera heavy tourists, in part because of its volcanic beauty, but also because of Skyfall. I was keen to use
the exact location where Daniel Craig and Judi Dench had a moment of reflection outside his parked Aston Martin DB5. After that, all hell broke loose.

With the help of the Alba traffic department of the Scottish Police, we were able to secure permits to briefly close the road. We were fortunate with the weather; this is not a blue-sky place and ideally, we wanted some snow and a hint of menace in the sky. There is a mournful beauty to the highlands that is visually compatible with flat light and low cloud. The sky falls low in Scotland.

This was a personal shoot for me given my heritage and my early childhood memories of skiing in Glencoe. Every shoot matters, but this one had an edge. The cone shaped volcanic monolith of Buachaille Etive stands proud at the entrance as if it was a white hatted sentry guarding the national treasures in the glen beyond.

This is the celebrated gateway to the Scottish Highlands and a land known not just for its natural beauty, but for its bloody past, particularly the Clan feuds between the MacDonalds and the Campbells. The drive through Glencoe encourages a silent historical musing as intense as any road I know in the world. Shit happened here.

But there is also an untamed regality to the region that has long drawn filmmakers and, of course, this goes full circle, as this remote part of the world has long been associated with the Fleming family and particularly Ian Fleming - the creator of James Bond. He lived here before moving to Jamaica in 1946.

A pivotal sequence in the 2012 Bond movie “Skyfall” was shot on the road down from the A82 to what was Ian Fleming’s nephew’s shooting lodge - Dalness. The location was well chosen and all those that are drawn to the mournful beauty of Scotland, appreciated the subtle alchemy between Bond’s DB5 and the quintessential Highland topography. I doubt any other Bond location has as many daily visitors as that Glen Etive Road.

This panoramic was taken near the entrance to that road on the West Highland Way. We had watched the weather forecast every day for 10 days before the shoot and not in our wildest dreams did we ever expect the light and the snow cover to be this kind to us.
