This period saloon scene in Durango, Colorado was a big ask and I don’t think I could have made this a couple of years ago. I sense that I have learnt from my mistakes and my work has improved in dimly lit rooms like this one. This is so much more of a challenge than photographing an elephant in Kenya and the stakes are much higher. With the talent involved, we had at least $100,000 of daily rates on site, I guess it’s a case of “go big or go home”.

It is a high risk game, but this kind of shoot excites me more these days. There were so many moving parts and so many talented people not to let down. I was exhausted when I hit my bed, but I think we achieved what we set out to do - a character rich, wild west bar scene filling every inch of the frame. It is also not a scene in any bar, but the Diamond Belle saloon in Durango, Colorado. Perhaps the most authentic and celebrated 1890 bar left in the Wild West.

The key was to compose the scene with the most menacing looking characters closest to the camera. Saturday was spent sunbathing and cursing our luck, but then at about 5pm, storm clouds started to gather and by 8 pm, there was a full-on blizzard. The contrast between the two places is astonishingly stark, given that they are only three miles apart. Whilst Vail was styled by architects and designers on Alpine Bavaria, Minturn was styled by grizzly prospectors looking only as far as the next day. Vail was built 80 years after Minturn and when the contractors finished a day’s shift, they would head west to the Minturn Saloon. It was the place to go and 60 years on, despite some remodeling and ownership changes, it remains exactly that. All those who know Vail, know the Minturn Saloon. Rather like the Woody Creek Tavern in Aspen, it has fostered a strong patronage over the years and when the doors open at 3 pm, the bar fills at a speed to suggest that this is a special and loved destination. As always it is the people that make the places and this bar attracts a rich variety of clientele. Part of the saloon’s appeal was that it was directly accessible by skis, by car, by foot and by horse and it therefore became something of a vortex at the end of the day. By the 1970s, the Minturn not only attracted cowboys, builders and miners, but the new bohemian hipster crowd from over the hill. I am always drawn to the visual contrasts afforded to a filmmaker when a wild frontier destination is fused with glamour. This was the premise for this story. I saw a chance to play with the cold winter light that day and the result works pleasingly well in colour. Alessandra Ambrosio is one of the leading models in the world and it was a pleasure to work with her. She certainly killed her look and showed why she is at the top of her game. Like any authentic wild west bar, there is a palpable sense of entering a building where bad things must have gone down. The walls are requested to talk by many an infatuated visitor, but they never do. In the Minturn’s case, that is portably just as
well, as some of the older walls come from a brothel up the hill in Leadville. That fact alone begs so many questions.

There was no room for fillers in my cast at the saloon that day. It is a kind canvas for a storyteller but we needed some very strong faces to do justice to the joint. The Brazilian supermodel - Alessandra Ambrosio - is so easy to work with and such fun and Ty Mitchell - who has become Martin Scorsese’s morally loose cowboy for good reason. The rest of the cast don’t look the most inviting and that was the general idea. My narrative was simply that this is a local bar and if outsiders do enter, they play by the local rules.

I would like to thank Anthony and Connie Mazza - who purchased the Minturn Saloon in December 2021 and then spent two years remodelling the landmark - for their kindness to our crew on the day of the shoot and we look forward to seeing this picture hanging on the walls of the legendary saloon very soon. ~ David Yarrow

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1213/7518/files/David-Yarrow-sorrel-sky-gallery-Photographic-Print-The-Minturn-Saloon.png?v=1708808501
the-lodge-at-vail
The Lodge At Vail
STANDARD
37” x 47” Unframed 52” x 62” Framed Edition of 12

LARGE
56” x 71” Unframed 71” x 86” Framed Edition of 12

Vail, Colorado - February 2024

The Lodge at Vail was the first proper hotel to operate in a resort that arrived at the Colorado ski party exceptionally late. The first stones of Vail were laid in 1962 making it the new kid on the block versus other Colorado ski towns such as Aspen, Breckenridge, or Steamboat Springs, which existed as 19th century mining towns prior to the establishment of their ski resorts.

To begin with, the hotel was a “white elephant”, losing $100,000 every year until the faux Bavarian town matured into something of substance. But to borrow from Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, “If you build it, he will come” and sure enough they came. The Lodge at Vail became the epicentre of a town that enjoyed growing popularity because of its abundant skiing and ease of travel.

The facade of the hotel has not changed much for several decades and I thought I could use that as a backdrop, in much the same way we did at Badrutt’s Palace in St Moritz, Switzerland in 2023. That photograph - which lent on the glamour of the 1970s in the resort - was hugely popular. There was an element of James Bond to it coupled with intense femininity.

The formula worked and so this became the prompt for my shot outside the Lodge. Such is the nature of the topography in Colorado. I think it is rather appropriate that there is such a distance in winter between the most famous ski resort in the world and the small community that is now dubbed “The last great Colorado ski town” because they couldn’t be more different. At the last census, only 1700 people claimed Crested Butte as home, but it is a known destination.

What both places have in common, however, is a mining past and with that goes dive bars that have stood the test of time. We know our angles and our lighting and we know the cowboys we can trust on top of that historic train.

David Yarrow

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1213/7518/files/David-Yarrow-sorrel-sky-gallery-Photographic-Print-TRAINSPOTTING.png?v=1741035245
the-robbers
THE ROBBERS

DURANGO, COLORADO - 2025

STANDARD
47” x 37” Unframed 62” x 52” Framed Edition of 12
LARGE
70” x 56” Unframed 85” x 71” Framed Edition of 12

We know this dramatic stretch of train track in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado as intimately as any stretch of railway in the world. I think I know it better than my train journey in the UK between London and our home in Devon. Over the years this familiarity has allowed us to fully commit to our craft.

Nothing is possible without the support of the owners of the steam train and the narrow-gauge railroad; the management and then the train drivers themselves.
It is a team effort and each year the level of mutual trust has circled upwards and allowed us to push boundaries creatively. We choose to film here in the winter, as low temperatures help with the breadth of visuals.

When the pressured steam is trapped between the engine and the towering escarpment, it can only escape upwards and climb the cliff face. At 7000 ft in the winter, the steam will then fall back to earth as sleet or snow. There is then the possibility that at this most dramatic of settings, the train is just a bit part in a chaotic and otherworldly scene of ice, snow, steam and smoke. We have learnt how to momentarily create a little bit of hell high up in this formidable canyon and who better to bring into this narrative than a couple of uncompromising train robbers.

The wider community of Durango has been so supportive of us over the years and these projects would not be possible without the help of many locals. We often fail in new ideas, but better that than never to try.

Camera capability in low light has evolved constantly since the beginning of my career but employing slow shutter speeds when filming moving subjects is still
as bad a combination as it has always been. The maths has not changed and it remains a low percentage gig.

The bonus of shooting at night in a location like this is that the stark lighting not only adds drama, it allows for unwelcome distractions to be too dark for the eye to see. The rich blacks suit train stations and many of the great movie sets in such locations have been filmed at night, no more so than with Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca.

The steam and smoke emitted from an early day’s steam train are most certainly a gift to filmmakers as they offer an extra character into the narrative and allow for isolation of the protagonist. We have a fondness for anything in a picture that defies gravity and I knew that this idea had potential.

The cowboy and the iron horse were unlikely bedfellows in the push west and most of the time they enabled each other and collaborated. But in the loosely governed final frontier, there were no certainties and danger lurked at every stopping point. I wanted to evoke not only the sense of journey but also the implicit danger. To travel in this era was to engage with the random walk of luck.

~ David Yarrow

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1213/7518/files/David-Yarrow-sorrel-sky-gallery-Photographic-Print-MIDNIGHT-EXPRESS.png?v=1741035261
