It is said that luck is the residue of design, but on this occasion, I think it would be disingenuous to suggest that we can attribute the capture of a flying horse to a preconceived plan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a spit of sand that only appears on Bantham beach near low tide and, with a long lens, the waves can be quite pronounced behind the sand. When I scouted the site, I noted the potential of the canvas in front of me, but realised timing would be critical.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGiven sunrise and low tide were just after 6 am, this meant for an extremely early start and a cold one too. The only angle that would work for me, was to be lying in the shallow sea water in front of the spit. The higher my body, the poorer the angle, so getting wet was unavoidable. The temperature, with the northerly wind, was only about three degrees above freezing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOccasionally there’s a split second of time when everything falls into place and the end result cannot be better and the frame cannot be repeated. This was one such moment and what was most satisfying, was that we were wrapped before 90% of the nation was even awake. There is a visual disconnect with anything I have previously experienced. It is the stuff of fantasy. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMy goal was simply to do justice to the animal and, if possible, highlight the pale blue eyes. These tigers are extremely dangerous and I knew that I needed the best \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ecamera and lens set up to compress distance and not lose detail. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI also knew that I would need several days to have my moment of a head on encounter. When it finally happened, I was lucky with the flat light. In our experience that is most unusual for an inside shoot, especially when we need to freeze a moving animal. That is why we keep returning to the Pioneer Bar high in the mountain of Montana, it is quite simply the best saloon bar we know in the whole of the US. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe mix things up in our storytelling at the Pioneer and some ideas work and some don’t. This one is, however, gold dust. My fellow Brit Charlie March did a grand job as the rakish cowboy at the bar; he holds court in a manner that suggests he is there everyday and doesn’t really care too much about what is going on in the outside world. As long as he could have a smoke and a whisky, Nixon could do whatever he wanted. Watergate was not going to impinge on his day. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eLife also goes on as normal elsewhere in the bar, the barman pours a beer whilst cowboys fight. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMy story was that this is a town cut off from current affairs and all the better for it. The wonderful reality is the fact that Virginia City is exactly like that. They really don’t care what happens in Washington so long as it doesn’t affect them. When McEnroe defeated Borg in four sets in the US Open Final of 1981 at Flushing Meadows, Borg left the stadium immediately and never played in a major tournament again. He was just 25 years old.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe late 1970s and early 1980s were heady days for the US Open. New York was rocking to a disco beat and American men and women dominated the higher seedings. In the latter stages of the men’s tournament, McEnroe would often face fellow countrymen such as Jimmy Connors and Vitas Gerulaitis. McEnroe and Gerulaitis - both New Yorkers and good friends - were known to head for Studio 54 once their night matches were over at Flushing Meadows. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy plan was to celebrate this era by hosting a little gathering on a New York subway car from the same period. The way to do this was to hire the New York Transit Museum for the day and dress one of the period cars as if it were 1981. I had my lead in the wonderfully unique John McEnroe; a formidable and gritty New Yorker who wears a subway look with ease. I asked him to bring his guitar which, of course, like a tennis racket, he plays left-handed and plays well. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eToday’s McEnroe was joined on his subway ride by characters all styled in the same era. Borg was a necessary extra somewhere in the carriage and we found a strong look alike. He was joined by a couple of Pan Am stewardesses and then, of course, it being New York, we had to make reference to the Village People. The final piece of the jigsaw was the subway adverts on the left and my team did a fine job finding the McEnroe Nike advert. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat would have been one hell of a journey on the subway. Whatever John McEnroe’s journey from here, it will be on his own terms and will be pursued with the intensity that has characterised his storied career. To be number one in the world for 170 weeks is the mark of a fiercely competitive character. Founded in 1854, it seemingly hasn’t changed much in 170 years and if the walls could talk, it would - “to be sure” - be one very long monologue.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe interior is a museum of the Irish in Manhattan and the joint has such a discernible vibe that Martin Scorsese and his crew did their press briefings for The Gangs of New York in the front bar. In the Great War, young soldiers heading to Europe in 1917, left a turkey wish bone on a wire above the bar; the bones of those who never returned still hang there in front of various JFK memorabilia.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe pub has been in the same Irish family hands for three generations and I was honoured to discover that the current custodian - Gregory - was a collector of my\u003cbr\u003ework. Naively, we tried to visit him on St Patrick’s Day, but couldn’t get within 200 yards of the pub. The next day, we had more luck and I was charmed not just by\u003cbr\u003eGregory, but by the whole vibe of the joint. It is a truly special place and I knew I had to film there.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI didn’t have long to wait for the opportunity as John McEnroe - one of the most loved and talented of all American sporting legends and a truly uncompromising New Yorker - had agreed to be filmed by me in the city. Although the McEnroes are of Irish origin and therefore McSorley’s seemed like an appropriate destination, the reason that the location made sense went far deeper than that; John personifies the gritty, uncompromising New Yorker who fights for what he believes to be right - he always has. My leaning was the sawdust laden floors of McSorley’s offered a far more appropriate platform to film this blunt, quintessential, street fighter than some smart Upper East side Italian restaurant or cocktail bar. We were going Irish and tough.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMcEnroe’s most famous rebuke to an umpire was the “you cannot be serious” line and I thought those words somewhere in McSorley’s - no matter how incongruous they would be to the rest of the décor - would complement John well. I asked him to bring his Gibson guitar and not a tennis racket, as music now defines him as much tennis and besides, we did give a nod to his rival Bjorn Borg in the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were on a creative roll now and I sensed we could add further to the visual overload. The band Village People seemed like a good additive, after-all, we were in the Village and they were of the McEnroe Borg era. Then, since we were playing to a sense of community, I thought we may as well throw in a lady of the night. Luckily Vivian from Pretty Woman was on hand to help.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is a bar full of Village People, which is what McSorley’s presumably was in 1854. McEnroe looks pure Rock and Roll bad ass. Hollywood found a sister location in this resort and was drawn to its shared values of celebrity, health, new wealth, and sex.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePalm Springs is the antithesis of the industrial “rust belt” of America and became a haven for those wanting to escape from their past or to enjoy a better life because of their past. It is no surprise perhaps that much of the Chicago mob money from the 1970s found its way down to Palm Springs.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMy idea was to take a single frame encapsulating this hot and colourful utopia. But there was no room to be earnest, I simply wanted to be long of parody, colour and symbolism. Too much wealth, leisure time and shopping can bring vacuous traits.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eLike film makers before me, I homed in on 1950s styling as I sensed that this was the era that defined the post war growth of the resort. I had the Ferrari and the police cars and from the first day of scouting in Palm Springs, we knew our street location and we knew our timing of roughly one hour after sunrise.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOur lead was the celebrated Alessandra Ambrosia - the super smart Brazilian model who can play any role ascribed to her. She “killed it” that morning and makes the image. Who knows who is being arrested in the background, but it doesn’t look like it’s particularly interfering with her morning.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis photograph is deliberately saturated in colour to evoke the gauzy, saccharine pleasures of the town. It was not just the speed of change that distinguished Telluride from other resorts, it was the fact that mining and skiing, for a brief period, coexisted.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe relative isolation of Telluride delayed the introduction of skiing until 1972, but remarkably, in those bohemian days of hipsters and freewheeling hedonists, the mines of Telluride remained operational. The visual contrast between the old timers and the new generation must have been stark at every level.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe mines have long since closed, and Telluride is now a second home for many Americans who love the grandeur of the mountains and the isolation and the understated charm of a fabled town. But perhaps what is most special about this place is that it was only recently that two subcultures united to make one and\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ethere is therefore a sense that the DNA and vibe of the town is entirely unique. It does not pay to have an elitist attitude or look down on people in this town: it is open to all.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe photograph was taken in Schmidt Ranch - the same destination that Quentin Tarantino shot his western masterpiece - The Hateful Eight. It was a visit to the Muira ranch that inspired Ferruccio Lamborghini to make a bull the symbol of his industrial empire and in his novel Death in the Afternoon, Ernest Hemingway wrote glowingly about the strain of bulls raised by Don Eduardo Miura’s sons.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI arrived in Seville to meet the Miura family knowing little about Andalusian culture other than watching Anthony Bourdain make the same trip in his series Parts Unknown. I have never been to a bull fight and have no such intention; I think I would find it too barbaric, but equally I respect local cultures and the bull is integral to the soul of this most unique and wonderful city.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe were introduced to one of the most revered of the matadors in Spain - Eduardo Davila Miura - who, of course, is another descendant of Don Eduardo Miura. Wandering around the inner streets of Seville with Eduardo and sampling Bourdain’s favoured tapas bars, was akin to walking down the King’s Road with David Beckham. I was left in no doubt that he is a national treasure.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut it was the Miura Ranch that I wanted to photograph and, of course, these enormous, esteemed bulls. I want to thank the Miura family for their collaboration and Alexander Fiske-Harrison (@fiskeharrison) for making the necessary introductions and facilitating the partnership, including with the bull itself. This project was new territory for everyone involved.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe ranch workers were fastidious on my safety and that of the bull we photographed that day. It is more because Le Club 55 has retained a unique vibe for decades. That is some trick for a famous restaurant and one achieved by so few. The credit for that must go to him and his daughter Camille.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePatrice has a cool insouciance that trickles down to his clientele and in so doing pays homage to the club’s roots. In 1955 Roger Vadim and his film crew who were shooting the love scenes for \"And God Created Woman\" mistook the driftwood furniture that Patrice’s father had laid up on his beach for a public restaurant. And so it was that Le Club 55 was born and the film’s lead - Brigitte Bardot - soon to be the world’s most famous woman - found her base camp.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is, of course, an indulgence in life at Le Club 55, but it is accompanied by a chilled nonchalance that cannot be bottled. So many destination venues are ultimately ruined by the clientele that want to be seen there: it is the money that eventually wins the day, but here in Pampelonne, that effortless and visceral authenticity remains sacrosanct.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere in the most idyllic part of the French Riviera, is a club that will always be sovereign and I sense that the behaviour is self-policed. The coastal communities can cast a spell and visitors extend stays, whilst locals seemingly never leave. There is generational continuity down here from fishermen to taxi drivers. It is difficult to conceive of a book being written about strong local communities across the world and Neapolitans being excluded.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I was scouting in the bay off Positano in the spring, I was struck by the beauty of the light just before sunset. The view looking west to town is always intoxicating, but when the sun disappears behind the mountains, it darkens quickly and a new mood descends on the community. House lights come on and, rather like mobile phones at a Coldplay concert, their random formations add a new layer to the canvas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy research suggested that there was a 15-minute window in the evening when there was just enough light to shoot from the sea, but it was dark enough for the town to be a “sky full of stars”. Shooting from a boat is never easy, but at twilight it is a particularly low percentage practice as the camera is working at the edge of its capabilities. The trick was to shoot over more than one night and wait for a calm ocean. Cameras have also become immeasurably more capable in low light, so the cameraman has more opportunity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI recognise that one photograph cannot bottle up and fully embody the sensory overload evoked by Italy, but for those that connect with La Dolce Vita at its most indulgent level, this may not be far off their Italian ideal. My home country, Scotland, has the A82 through Glencoe; America has the stretch through Monument Valley, Highway One and many more; Iceland has its entire ring road and then there is the Amalfi coastal road in southern Italy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is almost incumbent on any movie director filming in the area, to emphatically locate the destination by celebrating the road. That is instructive as it suggests that to ignore the means of travel is to forget a prop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe road is terrifying and breathtaking as one: hugging the cliffs on one side and offering vistas of the Tyrrhenian Sea on the other. John Steinbeck wrote of the terror of winding through the Amalfi Coast on a road that “corkscrewed on the edge of nothing”, clutched in his wife’s arms who was “weeping hysterically”. Every hairpin bend is a prelude to a new visual feast, and none more so than the bend heading west before Atrani. I knew, at some stage, this bend would find itself in front of my camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy leaning was to style a 1970s period shoot with a model capable of capturing the effortless grace and sexuality of Italian models of the time. She had to own the scene without impairing the visual feast behind her. American Supermodel, Brooks Nader, works with us regularly and knew exactly what I wanted from her. There needed to be some visual chaos but at the centre of it I wanted to convey an easy admiration for the best things in life. There is nothing to be ashamed of in enjoying the beautiful things: whether it be cuisine; fashion or people and Italians seem to be more comfortable with this default position than most.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose Atrani for this photograph partly because it is timeless and partly because the stairs off the main square lead the eye and the windows frame the subject. It is a wonderful canvas from which to work and it is no surprise that big Hollywood projects such as Riley and The Equaliser 3 have recently been filmed in this small gem of a town.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrooks Nader is a star and I often work with her. The beach scene at Bagno Antonio in Ischia, where Matt Damon’s Tom Ripley first deliberately encounters Dickie and Marge, was wonderfully crafted and it was so refreshing to hear from locals that the cast immersed themselves into the culture of one of the world’s most timeless of places.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter filming for three weeks in the area, I thought we had the resources to play a small parody on that specific beach scene. The visually arresting Castello Aragonese is, of course, still there, as are the owners of the beach club with whom Minghella collaborated. They could not have been more accommodating to our crew and I guess it brought back some fond memories for them. It’s not often you go to a beach bar and see faded personal pictures of Jude Law, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and most of all, perhaps, Anthony Minghella glued to the wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIschia is a special island with a unique domestic vibe and when we left, we did so comforted by the knowledge that we would return as soon as possible; it is that good.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“I am a teller of stories, a weaver of dreams. I sense that Capri does not have to try too hard, because it doesn’t really need to; everything is there and most of it always will be. There is security in the longevity of tenure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe island’s greatest trick is to offer a sense of belonging to visitors. Our cousins from across the pond, who come every year in their thousands, call it “little America”. That’s quite a stretch, but no doubt there is a century long love affair between America and Capri.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe island’s iconic rock formation - The Faraglioni - is the geological pantheon of the island and I knew that at some stage this summer I would use its vertical grandeur as a backdrop in my European storytelling. Of course, these sea stacks are over photographed, and I needed a fresh foreground that played to the lore of the island. It takes time to determine the right location to shoot from as so many angles have become a little generic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is one land location near Marina Piccola where I could take an old Vespa and this was a shot I hadn’t seen before. Logistically it’s not that easy to get access\u003cbr\u003ewith a bike. Just after sunrise, the rocks are kissed from behind by gentle sunlight and I knew that if I shot into the rising sun, I could engineer a rather dreamy canvas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe girls played their roles exactly as directed: I wanted both sexual confidence and a sense that their behaviour was not always coming from the highest moral drawer. The lions under his loving care will instinctively harm anyone, other than Kevin, in their way; they are wild lions, not pets.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis unique skill is both baffling and humbling and over our 14-year partnership we have developed a friendship as strong as any I have in the animal world. He knows as much about lions - the most endangered of Africa’s big 5 - as anyone. To see him at work has been one of the great privileges of my career.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think the best friendships are based on trust and mutual respect and fuelled by humour. That’s where we are and meanwhile our working relationship is founded on safety and then driven by the need to transcend on a visual level. It’s not easy as we both set high standards and it is a prerequisite that we strategise long before we shoot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI remember an interview with Matt Damon when he was asked about the process of making a movie scene. He said, “we iterate and then we iterate and then we iterate again”. That’s the way Kevin and I work. Photographs like this are made not taken. It’s very rare for me to take a photograph without prior creative processing. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI cannot conceive of the sort of human being who would point a gun at these majestic animals.  But I do know that if it was a fair battle, it would all be over very quickly. Lions are the alpha hunters, not humans. If he was right, and he surely was, then the deserts of Namibia in Africa lend you at least a couple more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe problem is that filming in the Namibian Desert is logistically a little more challenging than Arizona. The population density is 10 people per square mile - a tenth of America’s density - and in the desert, there is a palpable sense of solitude. Outside of the capital Windhoek the infrastructure is rather basic and to film ambitious projects demands resolve and a passion for adventure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNamibia is, however, the cheetah capital of the world. Since 1990, smart\u003cbr\u003econservation efforts have resulted in the population in the country growing from 1500 to 2500 - that’s one third of the planet’s total. We have long worked with the acclaimed cheetah conservationists Rudi and Marlice van Vuuren who founded the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary nearly 20 years ago and they partnered with us on this project in the Kanaan Desert.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI had this picture in my head since Covid days but I was only able to capture it in September 2024 - good things take time. Sunrise is a dangerous time to film; there are so many traps to fall into and the optimum light is ephemeral.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShooting towards the sun, which would be my default position, becomes challenging if the photograph like this is contextual as I don’t like to have the sun itself in an\u003cbr\u003eimage; it can be a little gaudy in colour and look extremely odd in black and white. To avoid the cliches and the tonal tension points, I prefer to film before the sun appears and this desert offers a chance as there are mountains for it to overcome. From my elevated position high in the sand dunes, the sun only arrives on stage a good 30 minutes after daylight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a sense of timeless eternity to this photograph. I look at it and smile - what a wonderful planet we rent. Huge credit to Shanina Shaik, she was brilliant to work with, and cared not one bit about the 3 am wake up calls. But I needed a central prop to hold the whole idea together. I needed something of substance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI had long deliberated over building a bar marooned in the middle of the desert. Not just a two-dimensional facade of a bar, but an actual functioning bar, with lights, cooling machines and entertainment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI confess that there was quite a bit of talking to myself about the risk reward ratio and I became all to mindful of Walt Disney’s famous advice of “stop talking and start doing”. I like to have creative courage and be bold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, I threw my fears away and we built our bar in the desert. It is so damn good that we are going to keep it there for tourists to visit and perhaps have a cold Namibian lager. It was not a small building job and six lorries full of wood and corrugated iron made the eight-hour trip south from Windhoek. I have never worked with a more willing bunch of people in my life than the Namibian production team and they had earned the right to be very proud of The Desert Inn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a tableau photograph like this, I want to be greedy and broaden the story: the barman and the bushman on the far right are the little details that help. The Bernina Pass - opened in 1865 - is one of the great stretches of mountain road in Europe.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI managed to get hold of a DB5 from a collector in Zurich and with great care it was positioned by the roadside at dawn. It is the epicentre of the Jackson Hole community and probably always will be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eClint Eastwood has acted in the bar (Any Which Way You Can), Willie Nelson and Hank Williams Jr have su the bar, with its retro neon lighting and famous rotating cowboy on horseback sign on the roof. My creative pondering never departed much from the premise that this backdrop offered a definitive sense of place and had to be paid homage to.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNeon lights don’t do themselves justice during the day, but as the bar is busy until closing, 365 days a year, shooting at night offered challenges. The solution was to film at 5.30 am and, on the morning of the shoot, this offered some bonuses as there was fresh snow and a temperature of 0°F. This extreme cold allowed the exhaust fumes from the Ford Bronco to add more drama to the set.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think a few cowboys were left a little disappointed with the manner of the cowgirl’s departure in this tableau. The drive through Glencoe encourages a silent historical musing as intense as any road I know in the world. Shit happened here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut there is also an untamed regality to the region that has long drawn filmmakers and, of course, this goes full circle, as this remote part of the world has long been associated with the Fleming family and particularly Ian Fleming - the creator of James Bond. He lived here before moving to Jamaica in 1946.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA pivotal sequence in the 2012 Bond movie “Skyfall” was shot on the road down from the A82 to what was Ian Fleming’s nephew’s shooting lodge - Dalness. The location was well chosen and all those that are drawn to the mournful beauty of Scotland, appreciated the subtle alchemy between Bond’s DB5 and the quintessential Highland topography. I doubt any other Bond location has as many daily visitors as that Glen Etive Road.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis panoramic was taken near the entrance to that road on the West Highland Way. We had watched the weather forecast every day for 10 days before the shoot and not in our wildest dreams did we ever expect the light and the snow cover to be this kind to us. We still had to move quickly with the props and I had to find compositional balance in my frame, but the weather was the transcending component. Two generations later, in the 1960s, Ford challenged Ferrari’s dominance in the racing car marketplace; an unlikely story that was well chronicled in the movie Ford v Ferrari.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome of the scenes from that film were shot at Willow Springs race circuit in California and we were excited to have access to this location to tell our own Ford racing division stories.\u003cbr\u003eThe 1967 Ford GT40 MK111 sits strikingly low to the ground and I saw an opportunity to pair the car with Cindy Crawford’s long legs. Hopefully the visual mismatch would then serve to highlight and showcase the beauty of both subjects.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCindy is one of the brightest of the lead supermodels since the 1980s and role playing is hardly a challenge for her. Meanwhile I suspect that Jimmie Johnson - one of the most successful NASCAR racers of all time - is also a performing artist in his spare time. The camera likes him and he likes the camera. The two American stars lives had not crossed until that day in Willow Springs, but they worked well together in this set and this photograph is certainly a keeper. Both landmark locations are tightly woven into the history of this idyllic community and have played host to legendary events. When Slim Aarons talked about “attractive people, doing attractive things in attractive places” he was giving a nod to these celebrated destinations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom my eye, The Colony is less about what goes on within, whether it be the cocktail parties, the endless poolside conversations or the bingo nights, and more about the emphatic sense of place offered by its storied pink façade. As much as any other hotel in the world, the entrance of The Colony is a microcosm of the community. The coral colour of the colonial style building and the green of the palm trees fuse in that subtle alchemy that is Palm Beach and meanwhile, those who arrive at the hotel are doing so to have fun not work. The Colony is the flag bearer of “Team Palm Beach”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI stayed at The Colony for a couple of nights before our shoot began and walked the nearby roads deliberating over what to do. The 1947 building is so tall and the entrance roads are so close to the building that it would be difficult to find a spot to celebrate the institution and tell a foreground story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut I realised there was one place on the bend of the road going southeast from Worth Avenue where I could get a car in the frame. The problem was that to get some space for my composition, the car would be going away from me. I mused over this riddle for a day and then, over an evening cocktail at the Colony, I found my solution.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe idea was solid, but we then had to execute it before the traffic became too steady. Frida Aasen – the Norwegian supermodel – played her role just as I asked and I walked along behind the slowly moving car. The Ocean Course at The Breakers may not quite have the global fame of these championship courses, but then again, neither do any other courses in the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut the Ocean Course, which dates to 1897, is the oldest golf course in Florida and its attachment to the most storied hotel in Florida, means that it has provenance and currency. The backdrop of the Renaissance revival styled facade of the grand old place immediately locates the course and this is helpful to a storyteller. The Breakers and Palm Beach are tied at the hip.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe are grateful to the owners of the hotel for giving us permission to stage a shoot on the approach to the 18th green and even more grateful that they allowed us to tell a story that played homage to the hotel’s wider facilities. But unfortunately these days there are not so many palm trees on the beaches - the town’s name cannot be taken too literally. But a couple of miles north of the island there are a couple of ideally positioned palms on Riviera Beach that have long grabbed my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe premise of photographing girls on a beach is something that slightly unsettles me. I am not a glamour photographer or indeed a fashion photographer, and it’s hardly a novel place to focus one’s lens. If the key to art is authenticity, the alarm bells start to ring when I walk onto a beach at sunrise with two models. But on this one occasion, in Palm Beach - the most idyllic and rarified of places to live - I felt that under these three lonely palm trees I could play to the vibe of Palm Beach and celebrate the beautiful world. Lauded riders convene to compete at many disciplines and a vast temporary community congregates each January to celebrate their love of horses and, to a large extent, each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is a social carnival but it would be wrong to dismiss Wellington as simply being an ancillary part of the Palm Beach society circuit; serious money is involved at every level of this food chain. This is where show jumpers earn their crust and where polo players make their reputations. If Detroit is the home of the American car industry, then Wellington is the home of its horse industry. And it is very much an industry. There is more work going on in Wellington than in Palm Beach but it is horse work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn our travels, we have been fortunate to meet both the Hildenbrand family and the Ganzi family who are key cogs within the world of competitive polo. They were both very supportive of my plans to do an equestrian series in Wellington and offered the use of their stunning properties and polo fields.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI saw this is as a chance to directly use the community as extras - as I wanted to convey not only a sense of place, but also a sense of that exact community. Worth Avenue looking east ticked many boxes for me as the clock tower instantly locates the set and, if my composition was tight, the absence of modernity would allow me to tell a period story. If possible, I wanted to go back in time to add more to the narrative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo write a love letter to this community without palm trees in the frame is sub optimal as they are integral to the vibe. It would be akin to paying homage to Aspen without any sense of snow or mountains. But dogs are almost as pivotal to the community as humans; to be dogless in Palm Beach seemingly risks social isolation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe problem was closing the road down and, to the best of my knowledge, in recent years it’s been challenging to get the town council to agree to this. We have some friends on that committee, however, and agreement was reached so long as we finished filming before 8 am. This meant shooting directly into the rising sun and this limited our effective shoot time to about 20 minutes. When the sun rises above the clock tower it is simply too powerful to work into.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, we had one shot at it and it was a true team effort. Nadine Leopold, the European supermodel, played her role perfectly as a carefree, dog loving, life loving resident of the community and luckily the poodle behaved at the right moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn my Palm Beach series, the starting premise was to be original in all that we did. There was simply no excuse for being hackneyed - that would be lame. Parody or not, that is a dangerous game for a visual artist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLocations were always going to be a central building block to this project and there were some important decisions to be made in a town that can be very busy. Early on we homed in on one area - La Ponche. It’s such an emblematic part of St Tropez: it was here that Roger Vadim rolled his cameras in “And God Created Woman” in 1958, the movie that made Bardot - his then wife - a world-wide sensation. With its narrow, cobbled streets and wider aesthetic splendour, La Ponche is the spiritual heart of St Tropez.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe harbour has several other attributes: it hasn’t changed much since 1958, it isn’t crowded with tourists at 6.45 am and furthermore, it is visually elevated in the first half hour when the sun rises from the east. It is also a practical location for an early morning shoot. La Ponche Hotel, where Bardot staying during the making of the movie, is still very much in operation and became our own HQ for the shoot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGunter Sachs started romancing Brigitte Bardot in the mid 60s, she was often seen on his Riva Aquarama - Dracula. It is a boat that embodies the glamour and style of 1960s St Tropez and luckily through a long friendship with Gunter’s son Rolf, we were able to borrow Dracula for the shoot. That was a big break.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hardest part of the jigsaw, however, was finding a balance between the model’s necessary anonymity and the sense that she could pass as Brigitte herself. We have worked with Frida Aasen before and felt confident that she could play the role prescribed. Frida had done her homework and understood her head angles and then it was simply hoping we would get one glimpse when it all aligned. She had to look the part.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI smile when I look at this photograph, in part because I sense some reward from the homework, the planning and then the spontaneity on the day. This is not a hobby; show jumpers may be collegiate, but there is rivalry and competition at every level in Wellington. The lead events are well attended, often televised, and an occasion in themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy preconception for this shot was that it should have an emphatic sense of place, but also a sense of occasion. There was always going to be three layers to the story: the foreground, which would lean on parody; the middle ground which would highlight the height defying skills of the horse and jumper and then a final layer of the crowd and the palm trees to add contextual narrative. We are well versed in using space in this manner, but this was a greedy concept. I needed to fit a great deal in for the story to work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere were so many people involved in making this tableau work. These two masterful storytellers happily fed on an implausibly good menu of vice, debauchery and excess. The astonishing reality is that these were not stories of fiction - they were - in large parts, factual.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI started work on an equity dealing floor in London in 1988, so I speak with a little authority when suggesting that not everything that went on at Stratton Oakmont was peculiar to that unhinged assembly of misfits. The 1980s were the Wild West and dealing rooms were the playgrounds of hard partying adrenalin junkies who believed that life was very much for living. It was a corporate Babylon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf course, serious business was going on, but so also was a great deal of monkey business. Those looking for a profession that rewarded frat house behaviour were attracted to the big investment banking dealing rooms. It was one big ride in the late 1980s and early 1990s and both men and women were complicit. Management unashamedly employed attractive and outgoing girls on their sales teams; it was seen as smart business practice. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the new millennium, the subprime crisis and enlightened thought stopped the party and now we are left with mere memories of a time when greed was good, when “rookie numbers” were rookie numbers and expense accounts and compliance were seriously out of control. The pros give the Wall Street types some shots, some stories and some tips and everyone goes away happy, with money raised for a good cause. It’s all fairly standard stuff.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut this matchup between nine times Major winner - Gary Player - and the infamous Wolf of Wall Street - Jordan Belfort and his entourage - looks a little spicier. For one thing, Mr Player is a man of principle who chooses his company carefully and then Mr Belfort is a competitive man who does not take kindly to be being shown up by a gentleman in his 90th year on the planet; it is not on brand. He wanted to impress the girls and not get his ass kicked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe juxtaposition of these two individuals offered the premise for a photograph that would merit a second look and that is always a good starting point for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf course there was only winner on the day. Gary Player is living proof that age is just a number and we are all humbled by his fitness and, of course, his golf game. Its original owner succumbed to gambling issues and, in 1890, it was bought by a regular guest - a British marine biologist called George Parker. Presumably he rather liked the view of the ocean. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCertainly, as hotel views go, Parker’s takes some beating from its balcony floor. There is a perfect outlook to the city, Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples and then, as one’s head turns clockwise to 2 pm, there, in all its splendour, amidst the azure sea, is the fabled island of Capri. We have all seen many contextual photographs of this storied summer paradise, but I had not seen one taken from the mainland at this elevation. I spotted an opportunity. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlessandra Ambrosio is one of the leading supermodels of her generation and she took to this role at Parker’s with the playful ease that is her hallmark. I thought it would be fun to have her eat pasta.  Afterall, we were where we were. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe chefs at Parker’s are lauded and they can make 5-star spaghetti alle vongole blindfold and drunk. That prop was never going to be a challenge. I just needed to find some compositional balance in the frame and a sunbed to complement Capri away in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis region of Italy is a very special part of the world. The topography, the islands, the sea, the food, the people and the culture combine to offer the perfect holiday.  To not find it totally intoxicating suggests a lack of some sort of sensibility, either that, or an allergy to pasta and boats. Over time, however, industry replaced leisure and Procida became a shipbuilding hub and, at one point in the 18th century, over 17,000 shipbuilders were employed on the tiny island. That compares with a total population today of 10,000.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShipbuilding faded here in the last century, but it does remain a place of boats - small islands without airports tend to be that way. In the making of Antony and Cleopatra, with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Cleopatra’s barge was filmed against the timeless harbour in the island. It is very difficult to put an age on any building here, which presumably was why the producers were drawn to Procida and neighbouring Ischia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe long thin multi coloured harbour is one of the most visually captivating sights in southern Italy. It certainly makes for a good backdrop and my leaning was to film at dusk so that we could add some energy from the house lights in town. This strategy always tests camera capability, and indeed the cameraman, and most of the photographs don’t stack up, but I consider it better than playing safe during normal daylight hours. Throw in the archaeological treasure trove of Pompeii, culinary preeminence, Diego Maradona and Napoli FC and this is an ancient city that never stops giving.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike being Texan, being Neapolitan assures a certain state of mind, but unlike Texas, that state of mind may have been on offer for 3000 years. The area has been continuously inhabited since 1000 BC - one of the oldest such cases in the world - and this has probably worked against radical urban redevelopment. I sense that there has never been a real window of opportunity to establish modernity and the reward is what we can now all see.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUndeniably poor in parts, and chaotic almost everywhere, Napoli is raw and untamed, but that is what makes it artistically captivating. What the inner city lacks in serenity, it makes up for in adrenalin. Driving a car here is a combative Olympic sport, not just a means of getting from A to B.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn filtering down to what is truly core to the city, I sense that two constituents simply cannot be removed - food and football. That is not to say that the other associations are emphatically weaker, but these two are surely integral to the fabric of the Paris of the South.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was fortunate to be working in town last Friday when Napoli FC landed the Serie A title for the 4th time in the club’s history. Forza Napoli and Forza Scott McTominay. And it was also a treat to work with Alessandra Ambrosio, who despite huge fame, has never really changed at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere have been many photographs taken in the Bay of Naples of girls eating pasta over the years and I wanted a fresh composition. I have had the odd drink alone in a bar when the weather has been awful outside, but it’s not an obvious lifestyle trait.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnyhow, at some stage there was some noise outside and the barman asked me to open the door to the club and check out what was going on. I did as requested and there, in the doorway, in the pouring rain, was an enormous male lion. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI woke up immediately in a panic and remembered the dream more vividly than normal. The imagery of the wet lion standing in the rain stayed with me and as time passed, I started to muse as to how we could create such a photograph. The idea was certainly authentic and I knew with the help of my dear friend Kevin Richardson - The Lion Whisperer - that anything was possible. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKevin and I spitballed over the phone as to how we could make this happen. It was not an easy premise to convert as lions do not like to get wet and will either seek shelter or shake off any surplus water immediately. But we worked out an approach with the rain and coupled that with a cage set up that would keep me safe. The key was then to convey a sense of nighttime even  though we would be working at dawn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI haven’t seen a picture like this before and even better, I have never had the dream again. We made this extra defence as last year he tried to dig under the cage to get to me. It’s not a comfortable experience. There is a calm countenance to this preconceived portrait that is at odds with his basic instincts and the reality of the situation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt does not take top percentile visual sensibility to recognise the splendour of white lions and my goal on this set was to celebrate every detail of his face. In this kind of light, there is every chance, provided Kevin, with his unique ability, can facilitate the engagement. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI loved the film Something’s Gotta Give and it’s not a bad title for this portrait. I often think of that beach house in the Hamptons and its emblematic cocktail of whites and creams. They are magical animals and the chance to take a portrait in a dark water environment free of any tension points was a moment of great fortune. In twenty eight hours of driving around Ranthambore with the most experienced of guides, this was my only encounter of any note with India’s most magnificent animal. It is a special picture and I guess it will become a well-known picture. It is something of a platitude to say that the bigger an image is printed, the greater the detail, but on this occasion it is very pertinent for two reasons.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirstly, a polar bear is a huge animal. If possible, any portrait should reflect this and – in this case – given that it is a head on shot, that is easy. The bear’s head in the image should be at least life size – if not more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSecondly the bear is pin sharp around its eyes. I think that I must have been closer than just about anyone has ever been to a polar bear in the wild and lived to tell the tale. I was also using Nikon’s flagship 58m lens – which captures every hair at the assigned focal point. When the first large print of the image came off the drum in LA, one of the team turned to me and said “David, look at the eyes – you are in them!”. He was right; I inadvertently took a selfie through the eyes of a polar bear. I am not in control of the bear’s line of attack and at moments like this, I can neither change my lens nor my position relative to the bear. The sequence as it pertains to my camera is over within two seconds and then it’s just a question of angles. If the bear’s more distant eye is obscured by his nose, then the image loses its power, but luckily, it’s right there. Furthermore, the distribution of the water patterns is also a gift that I am not sure I truly earned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhilst I sense that East African wildlife has been photographed to the point of saturation, the great outdoors of America, and in particular Alaska, still has a pull on me. I have not been back to Kenya or Tanzania for many years now, but I return to Alaska almost every year. Our success rate is not good, but that is in part because we believe any released shot must transcend at some level. I am simply a photographer, not a wildlife photographer, and I have great respect for those smart wildlife photographers who make a good living; it’s never been a tougher ask. Everyone is a photographer in 2025 and it’s difficult to be authentic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn many ways it’s a numbers game. Alaska’s expansive 650,000 square miles of territory makes it America’s largest state by far, but it has a population equivalent to less than two years of visitors to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, which covers just 600 square miles. That’s an instructive statistic. Bear photography in Alaska is popular in the National Parks of Katmai and Lake Clark, both of which are 100 times the size of the Maasai Mara. It is so much easier to be alone and in the wild in Alaska.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe like to be alone when we film and that is virtually impossible in most special places in the world, but it is very much still possible in the untamed tundra of Alaska and therein lies the draw. That and then, of course, the primal grandeur of the scenery and the spectacle of the salmon runs. If there is a third component, it is probably patience and an ability to kill time. I don’t really think camerawork, above a basic level, has much to do with it; it is more about making sure the camera is in front of interesting stuff when it matters and that is a function of logistical prowess and luck. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI sense that over the years our experience has helped push luck in our direction. As my friend Gary Player the golfer once commented “the more I practice the luckier I seem to get”. The guidance we have from 15 years of metadata of bear encounters on this river is never far from my mind. It is an iterative process and we have most certainly learnt on the job.  In the early days, I really had no idea what I was doing and my work with bears was bland and generic. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis part of Alaska is proper backcountry and a world removed from the staged shoots I do around the world. There are few comforts other than familiarity, but that is the biggest luxury of all. I think I have spent more time over the years on this small patch of river gravel than I have in any smart hotel room in the world. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI don’t like to photograph bears when the light is bright. Somehow they become less menacing, and the sense of awe can be lost. It rains a great deal in Alaska, but there are also many sunny days during the salmon runs and on those days bear photography can become challenging not long after breakfast. It is a long way to come to work in suboptimal light, so we tend to push things logistically.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe day I took this photograph we were in the air in our float plane just after 5.30am and no one was anywhere near us when we trekked the tundra 30 minutes later. That is the way to do it - be alone and in place early in the backcountry and then wait for decent daylight and the magic to unfold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was back home and in a welcome hot shower by 10 am. The contrast between the two places is astonishingly stark, given that they are only three miles apart. Whilst Vail was styled by architects and designers on Alpine Bavaria, Minturn was styled by grizzly prospectors looking only as far as the next day. Vail was built 80 years after Minturn and when the contractors finished a day’s shift, they would head west to the Minturn Saloon. It was the place to go and 60 years on, despite some remodeling and ownership changes, it remains exactly that. All those who know Vail, know the Minturn Saloon. Rather like the Woody Creek Tavern in Aspen, it has fostered a strong patronage over the years and when the doors open at 3 pm, the bar fills at a speed to suggest that this is a special and loved destination. As always it is the people that make the places and this bar attracts a rich variety of clientele. Part of the saloon’s appeal was that it was directly accessible by skis, by car, by foot and by horse and it therefore became something of a vortex at the end of the day. By the 1970s, the Minturn not only attracted cowboys, builders and miners, but the new bohemian hipster crowd from over the hill. I am always drawn to the visual contrasts afforded to a filmmaker when a wild frontier destination is fused with glamour. This was the premise for this story. I saw a chance to play with the cold winter light that day and the result works pleasingly well in colour. Alessandra Ambrosio is one of the leading models in the world and it was a pleasure to work with her. She certainly killed her look and showed why she is at the top of her game. Until the club was founded in 1985, there were many more bears and bison in the mountains than there were birdies.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith all this in mind, I sensed there was an opportunity to be playful and stage a Wild West golf match on the course. The locals could participate as extras, so long as they dressed in final frontier clothing, and then we just needed a proper ruffian as the lead. I chose my friend Ty Mitchell, an authentic cowboy and DiCaprio’s henchman in Killers of the Flower Moon. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut we were not quite finished with the cast. We knew a tame bison out of Santa Fe and his owner was fairly convinced that he would be comfortable carrying the outlaw’s golf clubs. It is a resort full of happy extroverts who embrace the culture of Carpe diem.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTelluride Golf Club is the third highest in elevation in America (out of 16,000 courses) and almost every hole has an outrageous backdrop. I thought that the 18th hole, with the cliff hugging airport in the distance, would be an ideal platform to tell a story of a Wild West community that knows how to enjoy life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have become increasingly drawn to participation art and greatly admire the work of French photographer JR. The quest for authenticity is core to art and participation art is almost always authentic. Sinclair supplied American Airlines with engine lubricant and the advert was a simple play on horsepower. Like many of the commercial adverts of that period, the message lent on the contribution to the war effort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe connectivity between horse and flying machine in the image was visually arresting and told a wonderful story. The creatives behind this piece of advertising art will no longer be with us but deserve great recognition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe started to spitball a few ideas to make our own version of this photograph. Camera capability may have come a long way in the last 80 years, but the nerve to fly 50 feet off the ground in a decent size plane is still not for everyone and we needed to find a pilot who embraced our ambition and would be game enough to join us in this homage to a piece of World War II history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe chose Alpine Airport in West Texas as our location for three reasons. Firstly, the airport sits in a stunning amphitheater with mountains to the west and south of the main runway. Secondly, the owners of the airport seemed to be our kind of people, who want to make things happen rather than find reasons why they should not. Thirdly, there would be no shortage of skilled cowboys in the area who could navigate their way through the horse part of the story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur pilot - Roger Woolsey - is a gem of a guy and used to low flying. In a male dominated environment, she ruled the roost. Berlin’s song, Take My Breath Away, which won an Academy award for Best Original Song, became synonymous with the movie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHer impact in the movie was central to my thought processing at Alpine Airport in West Texas when I took this photograph. I needed my model - Holly Graves, (who is in fact Texan) - to own the frame, and I think she does exactly that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s not breaking new ground to couple femininity with the contours of a vintage aircraft. Norman Parkinson introduced this creative formula 70 years ago. I think the challenge is to get the composition and the scaling right. If we revisit somewhere, my goals tend to be loftier than before, as we never want to regress creatively.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first alteration we made was to embrace the colors of the fall and this meant waiting for the first overnight frosts to golden the trees and give our backdrop some proper seasonal glory. So we planned our trip to the Smoky Mountains at the end of October, rather than the middle; we all know 10 days can make a huge difference in the colors of the fall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was wet, cold and a bit bleak but that is more appropriate weather for the scenes\u003cbr\u003ewe were shooting than balmy sunshine. Flat light can be a photographer’s great friend in scenes like this, so long as the rain holds off.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second addition was to bring in a horse and rider to run alongside the steam train. This is not a job for part time cowboys as the steam and the smoke from the train are uncertain variables for a horse. Ty Mitchell is an old hand at this\u003cbr\u003ekind of stuff; Martin Scorsese cast him as the bad guy in Killers of the Flower Moon and he is certainly a bad ass dude.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTy is as good and game as they come, but even he fell off his horse shooting this sequence; the first time I have seen him do that in our six-year friendship. Huge respect to him for just getting up and giving it another go.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result is a strong picture with enough layers to tell a full story. I had props at my disposal for the concept to have potential, but the execution here was a little harder than most.
