So much so, that there have been many retakes and parodies. As we all know, it featured a 26-year-old Crawford pulling up to the Halfway Café in a red sports car wearing a white tank top and jean shorts. Two young boys stare as the supermodel buys a Pepsi from a vending machine and drinks it down.

For some time I had yearned to do my own interpretation of the advert with a still photograph and I secured Cindy’s involvement, who in turn secured Pepsi’s approval (given the implicit tribute, why would Pepsi say “no”?). The Halfway House has not changed at all from 1992 and neither really has Cindy. The rest of the props were easy to replicate.

The issue was the two boys who were never in the same frame as Cindy in the advert and would be even harder to acknowledge or incorporate into one photograph whilst maintaining the narrative. The idea I went along with was to use wolves instead - that way I could introduce a new angle without losing the integrity of the adaptation.
Why wolves? Well it is a metaphor for all the men who have wanted to be at that gas station the next time Cindy Crawford turned up to fill up with gas, or indeed buy a soft drink. I wanted them to be looking keenly towards Cindy and the only way that could work in my set was to have them approaching her from behind. Since the roof was down in the car, it made total sense for them to have stealthily sneaked into the back seats whilst she went about her business. There is the necessary hunger and yearning in their disposition.

Cindy looks fabulous and makes the image which we all agreed had to be in colour. The first was the styling: we hired for Ciara the best we know - Mariel Haenn and her partner Rob Zangardi, in LA. Mariel styles Cara Delevingne and so works with us regularly. I gave her team a simple directive - “post-Civil War badass”. Mariel and Rob don’t need much more than that and Ciara looks ridiculously good and on point. Meanwhile, for Russell’s stylist Alicia Sereno, she did a first class job of making Russell look every bit as badass as Ciara. They both owned their looks.

The second call was to shoot in a rainstorm - an unrelenting one. As a storyteller, I have always enjoyed inclement weather, but I knew we would have to make the rain, not ask Russell and Ciara to wait for a storm mid-summer. I studied the rain scenes from Paul Greengrass’s recent western - News of the World - with Tom Hanks and the effect added such mood and textural detail to Hanks’ face and clothes that I could not remove the prompt from my head. To use rain in this shot was a good decision.

The third decision was, of course, to set the building on fire. I always want a Champions League model, not a Third Division player. I would never go to Botswana to photograph an elephant - they are smaller than their East African cousins.

With cowboys, I am drawn to the great state of Texas - where the most authentic, uncompromising, working cowboys in the world live their lives. The flat and arid, big sky topography of West Texas offers a distinctive canvas that not just locates an image, it also lends a stage on which to take a dynamic portrait. Texan cowboys are the real deal and the vastness of west Texas is their workplace.

On set on the Rio Grande, which divides America from Mexico, I met a working cowboy called Ryan Marshall. Mannered and tough, he boasted not only extraordinary horsemanship skills, but a bountiful and ageless moustache and beard. I knew that I had to take his portrait in full partnership with his magnificent horse, Frisco, and we had already scouted the perfect location and had been granted access to it the following day. The deal was done.

The photograph wins because of its vitality and power, but also because of Ryan’s anonymity. It is the heart of movie land and the massive billboards on the strip in West Hollywood leave the driver in no doubt that they are in the entertainment capital of the world.

My favourite filming location on the boulevard is looking west on the border of West Hollywood and Hollywood. In part because I can give a nod to one of the most famous hotels in the world without killing the compositional balance and in part because the famous vertical billboard, so often used by Marlboro in the old days, is in the heart of the image.

It is a special part of Americana and I am surprised that American icons have not been filmed more often in this location. We needed a lead, we needed to close the road down and then we needed a creative idea around which to wrap everything. My choice of lead was easy; Cindy Crawford is made for this shot. The closure of the road restricted our window to a Sunday morning between sunrise and 8 am, which meant a 4.30 am wake up. There are many reasons for this: unpredictable salmon run; nasty backdrops and the difficulty of being authentic. Alaska may seem a final frontier, but it is a well-trodden path for photographers and there is little merit in taking another down- ward picture of a salmon in a bear’s mouth. My success ratio is low over the last 10 years, but we now know the area well and have had our moments.

The legendary Brooks Falls location in Katmai, Alaska hosts many photographers and even more bears in July. Up by the waterfall, on a busy day, there can be as many as 20 photographers and two dozen bears. Incongruously, in this extremely re- mote outpost, a spectator stand has been built on the bank by the water- fall to accommodate the day visitors who fly in on float planes. Almost all visitors take the path through the woods to the standing terrace. It is prescriptive and pavlovian, but totally understandable as it is the lo- cation that has made Brooks famous - the bear infested waterfall.

I have never liked the location; it is mainstream and the angle of view
is all down, which never works. I always want to look up. The tiered platform gives off the vibe of attend- ing a major golf tournament, not being at the edge of America.

In 2022, we made a new plan for Brooks. If we were prepared to get very wet and come close to bears, we could photograph towards the waterfall from the heart of the river and use the feature as a backdrop and not the main event. This is not an easily accessible section of the river and that immediately appealed to me. It offered a whiff of novelty that would never emanate from the stadium up stream. The complication was that I needed to compress distance and lying in a river with a heavy
lens for a few hours is not much fun.

There is more chance of losing your equipment than winning the game. I also needed a big bear to walk towards me with a bit of attitude - a small bear would not cut it and nor would any angle of any bear that was not head on.

Very little worked for me that day and we did lose some gear. The
light was challenging and it was
not warm. But we came away with one shot that is different and that is more than I would have had from the stand. Better to have returned wet than chased waterfalls and this big bear has a swagger to him for sure. ~ David Yarrow

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1213/7518/files/David-Yarrow-sorrel-sky-gallery-Photographic-Print-Dont-Go-Chasing-Waterfalls.jpg?v=1723755839
the-book-of-daniel
The Book of Daniel

South Africa, 2022

LARGE

56” x 98” Unframed 71” x 113” Framed Edition of 20

STANDARD

37” x 65” Unframed 52” x 80” Framed Edition of 20

Available in both Colour and Monochrome.

Good creative ideas are only as good as the execution and when I conceived the idea of a literal photographic depiction of Daniel in a cave with wild lions, I recognised that pulling it off in the field would be as examining a production challenge as anything we had undertaken.

The fact that we ended up with this image - a career highlight - is testimony to the skills of many South Africans with whom we collaborated on this project, none more so than Kevin Richardson, The Lion Whisperer. The contrast between the two places is astonishingly stark, given that they are only three miles apart. Whilst Vail was styled by architects and designers on Alpine Bavaria, Minturn was styled by grizzly prospectors looking only as far as the next day. Vail was built 80 years after Minturn and when the contractors finished a day’s shift, they would head west to the Minturn Saloon. It was the place to go and 60 years on, despite some remodeling and ownership changes, it remains exactly that. All those who know Vail, know the Minturn Saloon. Rather like the Woody Creek Tavern in Aspen, it has fostered a strong patronage over the years and when the doors open at 3 pm, the bar fills at a speed to suggest that this is a special and loved destination. As always it is the people that make the places and this bar attracts a rich variety of clientele. Part of the saloon’s appeal was that it was directly accessible by skis, by car, by foot and by horse and it therefore became something of a vortex at the end of the day. By the 1970s, the Minturn not only attracted cowboys, builders and miners, but the new bohemian hipster crowd from over the hill. I am always drawn to the visual contrasts afforded to a filmmaker when a wild frontier destination is fused with glamour. This was the premise for this story. It is such a long way from home and there is little merit planning for a three-day visit anyway. The second part of the answer is more important: it was by showing China and the Chinese some respect. Without that there was no chance. This is a giant’s kingdom, and my images from previous trips have been too marginal to do either the giants or their kingdom justice. The photograph is elevated rather than weakened by the negative space and the bear’s anonymity. Since 2011, I have spent more than 30 days shooting in Svalbard, and this is my favorite image of a polar bear in this part of the Arctic. Indeed, the more I look at it, the prouder I am. We are asked to finish the story, not just read it, and the spartan economy of the narrative helps along the way. Less is more in the Arctic. Maradona is adored in Naples for bringing the local club the league title in 1987 and I figured that a gift or two of my well-known image could help my cause. I had sensed some empty space in front of the southerly stack and worked with local fisherman to sort that out, but I was also conscious of the need to fully showcase the famous parasols without blocking any of the leads. The scene was choreographed for those with familiarity and I was conscious of the need to elicit rich memories.

In my mind a photographic tableaux is all about the space between the people and the props and La Fontelina certainly gives you every chance. I like to have creative courage and be bold.

So, I threw my fears away and we built our bar in the desert. It is so damn good that we are going to keep it there for tourists to visit and perhaps have a cold Namibian lager. It was not a small building job and six lorries full of wood and corrugated iron made the eight-hour trip south from Windhoek. I have never worked with a more willing bunch of people in my life than the Namibian production team and they had earned the right to be very proud of The Desert Inn.

In a tableau photograph like this, I want to be greedy and broaden the story: the barman and the bushman on the far right are the little details that help. It was a nice idea and there were some eye-catching visual contrasts in the collection. But telephone kiosks do not tend to play host to people of disposable moral fibre, whereas pool lounges largely do and that is why a pool table is such a good prop; it smacks of the possibility of trouble.

I think if there was a book of pool table images playing to the lore of a sketchy saloon, this photograph would stand a good chance of being front cover. It has everything you need, including that vague hint of vice.

Cara Delevingne is so much more than just a supermodel. She is a generational talent and a force of nature. Its authentic western vibe draws hundreds of visitors a day and yet despite this fame, the joint retains a folksy charm. That is quite a trick. The solution was to film at 5.30 am and, on the morning of the shoot, this offered some bonuses as there was fresh snow and a temperature of 0°F. This extreme cold allowed the exhaust fumes from the Ford Bronco to add more drama to the set.

I think a few cowboys were left a little disappointed with the manner of the cowgirl’s departure in this tableau. Both communities stand guarded by mountains so dramatically grand that there is an extra sense of excitement on arrival. To land at Jackson Hole airport on a clear day is a thrill, even for the most travel weary of passengers; there is as pronounced a visual overload as there is at any airport in America. When I think about the town of Jackson, I find it impossible not to think about the Tetons. To me they are coupled at the hip.

Grand Teton, at 13,775 feet, is the highest point of the Teton Range and it rises steeply from the valley floor 7,000 feet below.
