It was a cold and rainy evening and the bar represented a place of relative warmth and comfort. There were a handful of customers in the club and I have no idea why my unconscious mind was taking me here - it was certainly not a place known to me. I have had the odd drink alone in a bar when the weather has been awful outside, but it’s not an obvious lifestyle trait.

Anyhow, at some stage there was some noise outside and the barman asked me to open the door to the club and check out what was going on. I did as requested and there, in the doorway, in the pouring rain, was an enormous male lion.

I woke up immediately in a panic and remembered the dream more vividly than normal. The imagery of the wet lion standing in the rain stayed with me and as time passed, I started to muse as to how we could create such a photograph. It was not an easy premise to convert as lions do not like to get wet and will either seek shelter or shake off any surplus water immediately.

The idea was certainly authentic and I knew with the help of my dear friend Kevin Richardson - The Lion Whisperer - that anything was possible.

Kevin and I spitballed over the phone as to how we could make this happen. It was not an easy premise to convert as lions do not like to get wet and will either seek shelter or shake off any surplus water immediately. It is a special picture and I guess it will become a well-known picture. It is something of a platitude to say that the bigger an image is printed, the greater the detail, but on this occasion it is very pertinent for two reasons.

Firstly, a polar bear is a huge animal. If possible, any portrait should reflect this and – in this case – given that it is a head on shot, that is easy. The bear’s head in the image should be at least life size – if not more.

Secondly the bear is pin sharp around its eyes. I think that I must have been closer than just about anyone has ever been to a polar bear in the wild and lived to tell the tale. I was also using Nikon’s flagship 58m lens – which captures every hair at the assigned focal point. When the first large print of the image came off the drum in LA, one of the team turned to me and said “David, look at the eyes – you are in them!”. He was right; I inadvertently took a selfie through the eyes of a polar bear. The quest for authenticity is core to art and participation art is almost always authentic. Involving many people in a staged image does lean on logistics a little, but the key is to emotionally invest in the community of whom you are asking so much.

It is about “winning the crowd” and I could not have done this without the support and advocacy of locals in town. There tends to be just three or four iconic images that transcend the overall body of work and will always be remembered. These three or four shots define a career.

I was not sure where my career would take me, and I was not sure if I had taken an iconic image yet — I let others decide. But I do know that this photograph, part of the TAG Heuer “Don’t Crack Under Pressure” campaign, is probably one of the most powerful shots I have ever taken. Yes, it was a commercial shoot with one of the world’s most famous women, but I think it goes beyond that. It grabs the eye and then holds it in a viselike grip. Everything about the work is viscerally powerful.

I look back on that day with great emotion. There are so many people to thank, none more so than the British icon Cara Delevingne. She is of course stunning, but she is also authentic
and intelligent and couples these qualities with an admirable work ethic. Furthermore, on this day she was incredibly brave and fittingly did not crack under pressure. This image is
not manipulated; there were five yards between her and the lion. At no stage did she show tension or anxiety, and that made my job so much easier.

I think a key to the image was the reasonably powerful late-afternoon sunlight, as the shadows on both Cara and the lion are so consistent that the authenticity of the image can’t be questioned. In the morning, the light was flatter, and thus the lion and Cara were not as visually linked as they are here.

This campaign would not have been possible without the help of Kevin Richardson in South Africa and I thank him for the awareness he brings to the plight of the lion in Africa. We know each other so well and that day in December in South Africa was the culmination of a trust that has built up over 5 years of working with each other. Finally, I would like to thank Jean-Claude Bivet - the genius behind TAG Heuer - and Valerie Grande for always wearing a smile.

~ David Yarrow

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1213/7518/files/David-Yarrow-sorrel-sky-gallery-Photographic-Print-Cara-Cigar.jpg?v=1755291322
gone-fishing-1
Gone Fishing

LARGE - Edition of 12
Unframed - 56" x 58"
Framed - 71" x 73"

STANDARD - Edition of 12
Unframed - 37" x 38"
Framed - 52" x 53"

FUNNEL CREEK, ALASKA - 2025

The volume of salmon in this river in Katmai, Alaska during late July/early August pushes the odds in favour of the bear.
