Original Acrylic - 50x70
“This piece is named after John Ford's truly great movie dealing with Wyatt Earp and the OK Corral gunfight. Historically Ford gets things wrong, even down to the wrong year for the gunfight! Yet everything else works so well and beautifully that I consider it the best movie on the celebrated gunfight because it captures the MYTHIC meaning of Wyatt Earp and the famous gunfight. In the movie, Clementine is a wholly fictional character who is the ex-lover of a now-dying Doc Holliday and she has ventured out from Boston searching for him. Unlike history, Doc is killed in the gunfight leaving Clementine all alone in the wilderness of the Wild West. Earp and Clem kinda fall in love but he has to be movin' on and she has to remain as she will now be the new schoolmarm. So I named the painting after Ford's movie because they both, movie and painting, deal directly with the power of that myth. The actual gunfight took place in Tombstone yet in my painting the Earp's and Doc Holliday seem to be walking out of the landscape rather than down Fremont Street in Tombstone.” - Left to Right: Doc Holliday (with the shotgun), Wyatt Earp, Virgil Earp (with cane), Morgan Earp.
