Here we have, once again, Pat Garrett and his two deputies tracking down Billy the Kid in July of 1881. They had been in Roswell when they learned that the Kid MIGHT be hanging out at his old haunts around Ft. Sumner, which was a four-day ride north of Roswell. Though Garrett doubted that the Kid would be foolish enough to be hanging around Ft. Sumner, he took his two men and began the long ride north.

The problem was that Garrett was well known in the area while his two deputies, John Poe and Kip McKinney, were not. Also, Garrett was a very tall man for that time and place and so was easily recognizable. The men would be traveling on a very well-traveled road and they had to figure out some way to avoid detection less their presence get back to Billy and he could then flee the territory. What they decided to do was to travel by night and hide out in the sand hills during the day thus reducing the possibility of being spotted. In this painting, the three men are seen sitting in the sand hills waiting to mount their horses and begin another night's journey north.
