It is said that luck is the residue of design, but on this occasion, I think it would be disingenuous to suggest that we can attribute the capture of a flying horse to a preconceived plan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a spit of sand that only appears on Bantham beach near low tide and, with a long lens, the waves can be quite pronounced behind the sand. When I scouted the site, I noted the potential of the canvas in front of me, but realised timing would be critical.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGiven sunrise and low tide were just after 6 am, this meant for an extremely early start and a cold one too. The only angle that would work for me, was to be lying in the shallow sea water in front of the spit. The higher my body, the poorer the angle, so getting wet was unavoidable. The temperature, with the northerly wind, was only about three degrees above freezing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOccasionally there’s a split second of time when everything falls into place and the end result cannot be better and the frame cannot be repeated. This was one such moment and what was most satisfying, was that we were wrapped before 90% of the nation was even awake. Their client roster is a tour de force of movie studios in Hollywood and we fully acknowledge that photographs such as Punk would not be possible without them. It is not as if we can turn up at the Glacial lagoon in Jokulsarlon two hours before sunset and hope that one of the most aesthetically blessed horses in the country will be charging towards us through the water and ice. The odds of that are long.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut even when some things are assured, there is work to be done. To create the mood I was looking for, I needed to match the horse’s dynamism with an ethereal serenity, which is not easy as action images tend to work against a state of calm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI knew I was going to get wet, as my position had to be at ground level. Any elevated position would be immediately obvious and the sense of immersion would be gone. I also wanted as much depth of field as possible to amplify the sense of place, but we had a good amount of light to work with, albeit with the setting sun at 11am. Nevertheless, the “execution of idea” risk was material, even with the best Nikon gear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe horse’s head makes the image - adding fire and energy to the arctic backdrop. Front on and in full flight, they are full of muscle and yet at the same time exude elegance. I can't think of another animal that manages this balance so well. Little wonder their aesthetics have been the focus of artists for centuries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJames Watt - the Scot who invented steam engines in the late 18 century - figured out a mathematical way to equate horses to engine power. Thus the term horsepower was invented. When shooting west, a low tide was necessary to be able to work the estuary on foot and a low sun would allow for shade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinding the day required just 60 seconds research on the internet, but of course there could be no assurance that the weather on the optimum day would be good - especially in the UK. Without sunlight, there wouldn’t be a picture - I would not have enough light to freeze the action and secondly there would not be enough contrast between the subject and the background. I needed a beautiful evening and a sky free of cloud.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut that day our luck was in and I was able to shoot the running stallion at 1\/3000th of a second. This was enough for every drop of water to be pin sharp. The configuration of the spray and the shape of the water was always going to be random, I just had to try and focus on the horse’s head. If I could afford it, I would dedicate a room to his work—partly because his work ethic and dedication are inspirational and partly because I share his obsession with the American West. In 1906, J. P. Morgan provided Curtis with $75,000 to produce a series on Native Americans. This work was to be in 20 volumes with 1,500 photographs. Morgan’s funds were to be disbursed over five years and were earmarked to support only fieldwork for the books, not for writing, editing, or production of the volumes. Curtis received no salary for the project.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is one photograph of his that I have long had an obsession with—Canyon de Chelly—taken in 1904. His depiction of Navajos crossing the desert on horseback, their graceful silhouettes at the base of Arizona’s Canyon de Chelly, is a coveted piece of early 20th-century art and a symbol of the American West. When I was working on the South Coast of Iceland in 2018, I recognized the opportunity to pay homage to this classic photograph. There is a vast isolated rock, which is unlike any other geologic feature I have seen anywhere in the world, stranded on the volcanic black beach 10 miles east of Vík. Unsurprisingly, it has featured in movies, such as the recent Star Wars franchise.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe goal was to give a sense of scale, as Curtis had done in Arizona more than 100 years earlier. Fortunately, I was working with some Icelandic ponies anyway, so I just had to work quickly in the time available. Last week I was very honoured to be asked to shoot the new Land Rover Defender on this location - it is a filmmaker’s El Dorado.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2007, the Dyer farming family made a decision to commit all retained earnings from commercial activities on Borana to support the increased costs of conservation. Borana and Lewa together now boast the most successful rhino conservancy in Kenya. Poaching is a thing of the past in this part of Kenya and much of the credit belongs to second and third generation farming families like the Dyers and the Craigs in Lewa, who know what they are talking about. As I grow older, I recognise the importance of knowing what I am talking about.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe success of Kenyan farmers in Borana brought new residents from Europe and even more horses. But not just any horses - champion racehorses. This remote area is geologically angry and in deep winter it is fairly inhospitable, but in the summer, it becomes something of a tourist resort for the local Icelandics and all too crowded for how we operate. We would always choose inhospitable over crowded.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI have filmed here in the winter in the past, but struggled to do justice to the uniquely raw ecosystem. As always there is an element of knowing how to get it right by initially getting it hopelessly wrong. In particular, this is not a safe place without engaging locals, because the ground underneath, much like Yellowstone in Wyoming, is not to be taken for granted. The waterfall itself is of little interest to me; it is photographed thousands of times a day by good photographers with good cameras. It must be used as part of the story, not the whole event.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe riddle is how to manage the distance between the camera and the point of impact of the huge volumes of water that smash onto the ground. To work too close\u003cbr\u003erisks not just losing perspective, but having spray, quickly rendering the camera inoperable. To work further away is more practical, but then the distance compression can dumb things down and lose the sense of immersion and importantly the scale.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe now know our spot and our lens choice, but this was the first time we had put it to the test in the snow, when Skogafoss becomes a three-sided winter vortex; a\u003cbr\u003ebit like a deep freeze with the front door removed. It certainly requires a few hand warmers and a load of towels to survive even 10 minutes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTourists started to arrive at around 9 am, which meant we were wrapped before most people were up, but that is often the way in Iceland. We had a small window\u003cbr\u003eand we used it well.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph should really be credited to the horse farmer who finished off being absolutely drenched. They make them tough up in Iceland; he didn’t complain\u003cbr\u003eonce and found the whole experience rather entertaining.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I looked at this image for the first time on a big screen, I saw the seagull soaring half way up the waterfall. Our production team - the ex-\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ecellent True North - had secured us access both to the land and their Icelandic horses who play out their lives in this most majestic of settings.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe goal was to shoot with snow on the ground and snow on the mountains as I knew this could offer a further sense of mythology. I am always greedy with my\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003evisuals and I wanted a sense of the cold.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut the day before the planned shoot, the temperature rose above freezing and my canvas on the ground melted quickly. No one has done more to raise awareness\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eof the plight of the Mustangs in today’s America than Madeleine and no one has done more to offer safe sanctuary. This was always a collaboration with her and I hope sales from this image will eat into the financial burden she bears each year to protect an animal core to Americana.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere are over 1,000 mustangs in her care in Nevada and I observed that they do often behave in a skittish and sheepish way, running in big collectives in one direction for no particular reason. The odds of this happening directly towards my camera in decent light were small and our game plan was always to use feeding time as an opportunity to improve those odds.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI had my chance late one afternoon in January 2023, but almost all of my images in that five minutes of chaos were cluttered and messy, as is often the case with untamed horses. Images of single mustangs were easier but were never going to cut it as the essence of the place is the collective. It is an extraordinary spectacle when they move as one.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBut luckily, and it was luck, one split second offered the chance to embody everything I could have wished for and just a little bit more. I have no problem getting wet, if this is the result.\u2028\u2028There is something other worldly about this image. It looks mythical and the flat light adds to the illusion. We live our day to day lives full of the bitter\/sweet noise of reality, which I guess is why the world of fantasy is so popular. Skogafoss waterfall gives photographers every chance, but I have never taken them until last week. I am reminded of the Japanese adage that “success is 99% failure”.\u2028\u2028I am not sure which of the two waterfall images I prefer, this or a different, more dynamic one that I took here. But I guess it’s not up to me, it is up to others. The lake is busy in February, it also hosts car races, polo and even cricket matches and Badrutt’s watches imperiously above it all.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy idea was to bring a horse and jockey into the famous bar at Badrutt’s and I sensed that the hotel management - led by the GM, Richard Leuenberger - would be open minded to this. It is one of the peculiarities of St Moritz that despite its wealth and excessive glamour, there is not a stuffiness to the town. Instead, there is a sense of heritage and a keenness to celebrate that heritage. Horses and jockeys are part of that and Richard - who was a wonderful partner throughout this project - agreed to the idea.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere are few hotel bars in the world that have the history and the lure of the Renaissance Bar at Badrutt’s. There are no real rules at the bar, smoking is permitted and there is no closing time. My team was quietly setting up one morning at dawn and I wondered where the noise was coming from. I should have thought harder - the bar was still open.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRichard was keen that some of the legendary figures among the Badrutt’s 800 strong staff were\u003cbr\u003epart of the picture and I wholly agreed. The best indication of the severity of the conditions was that within minutes of returning to our modest hotel a couple of miles away, the Icelandic traffic police closed the road in either direction. I can’t remember another time when the weather has deteriorated so quickly that we have gone from filming outdoors to a weather enforced lock in within an hour. That is Iceland for you. It is not only geologically angry beneath the surface, it can be brutal above ground as well.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe credit for this picture must really go to the nearby farmers and their horses. I knew that I had an exceptional canvas to play with: the sea stacks coated in fresh snow and the sea itself a chaotic cocktail of white. Landscape photography is a very challenging genre of photography and not one I have ever really shown much distinction at. I want to tell my own stories and that requires bringing our own props and simply using the backdrop as a canvas. My mindset is to be close and then to be extremely selective as to the times when the camera is facing the wall of water. In other words, don’t point the camera at the water until it is a necessity.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI prefer a winter foreground as it simply adds narrative, especially if the horses can kick up snow in their gallop away from the thunderous noise behind them. The local famers brought four horses to the set and one in particular had attitude and an appetite to put on a show. If the handlers could get that horse to turn in mid gallop, the greater the chance that he could kick some snow.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe weather was brutal that day and there was only a 15-minute window of light between the storms. It was cold, wet and windy and the camera lens needed every bit of love to remain operable. I wanted to visually glorify the amphitheatre as much as the racing itself and this required fresh snow. After a thaw, any winter town can look unexceptional, whereas after a snowfall it can look like a Disney movie or a winter wonderland from the pages of a story book.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSt Moritz is a sunny place and the sun facing slopes of the town and the surrounding trees can get a little messy and green after just one day of sun. From the far side of the lake, all the iconic grand hotels such as Badrutt’s Palace and the Kulm Hotel stand out, in all their glory along with the church spire and the famous old mountain railway. There can surely be no more glamorous a backdrop for a horse racetrack in the world, so long as there is fresh snow.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBut my needs were even more demanding than fresh snow. There had to be not just recent snow, but no falling snow, and then, if possible, I did not want the sun to be out, as, by the time the races started at 11.30am, the winter sunshine would make everything too stark. I struggle to tell a story in harsh light, as the aggressive tonal range can detract from what the artist wants to say. But I also wanted depth, so that there were layers in the photograph from the horses up front to the cable car high in the mountains in the background. To do this needed light, but just flat winter light.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI woke that Sunday morning in town in February 2024 and saw my chance. It was still snowing, but the forecast was for it to stop by 11 am. The odds were always so low - one could wait many years to get these conditions on one of the three Sundays in February. But on 11 February 2024, it was all there for me and I took my chance. It’s fair to say that I have been thinking about my camera settings for many years on this shot.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe photograph would not have been possible without the collaboration of Dennis Schiergen, who has been at the helm of the White Turf - either as a jockey or now as its lead official - for many years. He loves the image and that makes me happy. I guess it is visually arresting, but all I was doing was photographing what was in front of my camera; I was not doing anything special. Every time we go back, we have more experience of what does and doesn’t work. It is still a true test for us and failing is very possible. We have often underachieved here and that hurts as this is a spectacular place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are two big issues to deal with: firstly, a shoot can only be done before the tourists arrive and that means an early start and a pre-breakfast finish. But for a third of the year, the light before 9 am is suboptimal - so timing and planning is everything. This is not a winter shot unless the roads are tricky and the tourists can’t make it until 10 am.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe far bigger issue is that the closer we are to the waterfall, the more intense the spray. Such is the volume of water that positioning even 200 yards from the bottom of the waterfall is akin to being in a very impressive multi jet shower room. Move in 50 yards and it equates to being in a torrential downpour setting and move 50 yards further in and the camera will not last long. It is, of course, against all my principles to compress distance and that dictates getting close.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have come to like a position about 125 yards out, but the spray only gives me one second each time to take a shot before the front of the lens is soaked. That makes the whole process very challenging, especially as I am lying in the water. Everything gets very wet and that kind of caps the time to get an image to about 10 minutes a time. Then there are the horses to consider too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the strongest image I have taken at Skogafoss over the last 10 years. I think we were all done by 7 am. It is always rewarding when the end result is far better than the preconception.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe most relevant tips for working here are have loads of lens cloths and take a hot shower within 30 minutes. The ice lagoon immediately to the north of the beach is one of the most visually intoxicating vistas in the world, but the secret is out - this is the Grand Canyon of the North.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have looked at the work of others here and also been quite critically examining of our own. We have long had an admiration for Tim Flach’s horse images from this location, but after that there is a bit of a gap. My work has also been fairly mediocre here over the years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph - from July of this year - is certainly stronger than anything we have done before. There is a sense of place, theatrical light and the Icelandic horse is in exactly the right position. I needed that huge lump of ice to be sharp in order to show its textural beauty and that demanded both horse and ice be on the same focal plane. The bigger iceberg in the sea frames and completes the story. I have never before achieved compositional balance on this beach.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis can be a busy stretch of coast at 3 pm in mid-summer, but not at 5.15 am when this picture was taken. It often doesn't not come off, but as Wayne Gretzky said “you miss 100% of the shots you don't take”. It is better to try and not succeed, than never try at all. And I have got used to not succeeding in Iceland.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have rarely known a wind as strong as the one that greeted us in Iceland in March 2018 and whilst it made driving difficult, the upside was that the sea was transformed into a ferocious body of white horses. Stormy seas have long attracted artists and whether I am at home in Devon, or working in California, a powerful sea casts a magnetic visual spell on me. I am not alone in this obsession, but images of storms often fail to convey the enormity and rawness of the conditions. Working the situation into a transcending single shot narrative is a tough ask.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI just needed to work towards a plan as quickly as possible, before the winds subsided. My instincts were immediately to find a white horse to complement the conditions and my fixers were already on this thought process by the time I arrived in Iceland. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are many components to this image that coalesce and the backdrop of these unruly and dramatic rock pinnacles was an immediate choice. They are a well-known formation by the coastal village of Vik, which is about three hours’ drive east from the capital. The village is well known to film makers because of its black beaches and other worldly rock formations. I have stayed nights in Vik in the past and yearned for conditions like these in which to shoot.. This really is Game of Thrones territory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI needed the distance between the horse and the rocks to be as short as possible and this necessitated shooting at low tide - a stroke of luck as this would be early the next morning and the wind was forecast to die down in the afternoon. The whole affair, like Thomas Crown’s, is deeply aspirational. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph works largely because of the flat light in Wellington, Florida that spring morning. It gives granularity not just to the 1950s Austin-Healey car and the girls, but the whole set. Sunlight always reduces depth and this story needed depth. Camera capability may have come a long way in the last 80 years, but the nerve to fly 50 feet off the ground in a decent size plane is still not for everyone and we needed to find a pilot who embraced our ambition and would be game enough to join us in this homage to a piece of World War II history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe chose Alpine Airport in West Texas as our location for three reasons. Firstly, the airport sits in a stunning amphitheater with mountains to the west and south of the main runway. Sinclair supplied American Airlines with engine lubricant and the advert was a simple play on horsepower. Like many of the commercial adverts of that period, the message lent on the contribution to the war effort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe connectivity between horse and flying machine in the image was visually arresting and told a wonderful story. The creatives behind this piece of advertising art will no longer be with us but deserve great recognition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe started to spitball a few ideas to make our own version of this photograph. Camera capability may have come a long way in the last 80 years, but the nerve to fly 50 feet off the ground in a decent size plane is still not for everyone and we needed to find a pilot who embraced our ambition and would be game enough to join us in this homage to a piece of World War II history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe chose Alpine Airport in West Texas as our location for three reasons. Firstly, the airport sits in a stunning amphitheater with mountains to the west and south of the main runway. Secondly, the owners of the airport seemed to be our kind of people, who want to make things happen rather than find reasons why they should not. Thirdly, there would be no shortage of skilled cowboys in the area who could navigate their way through the horse part of the story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur pilot - Roger Woolsey - is a gem of a guy and used to low flying. There are, of course, gentler sections that attract fishermen, but 10 miles south of Silverton is fierce and untamed. That seemed the perfect place to film two of the best horsemen I know in the West.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI had difficulty making my way out into the river - not because the water was either cold or deep, but because the boulders are big and largely undetectable through the murky water. I knew that the scale of the backdrop behind me was awesome and as I stumbled into position I could not help but wonder if anyone had taken a camera here before.
