Kachinas represent the spirits found in everything. The spirit of people, of animals and plants, of seasons and phases and cycles. Most people are more familiar with Kachina dolls that are given to children to help them learn about these spirits and the lessons they teach. However, when a Kachina dancer dons a mask during a ceremony, he becomes the Kachina. Here Farnsworth calls attention to the importance of the Niman or Going Home Ceremony, marked by the Summer Solstice. This ceremony signals the return of the Kachinas to their home on the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, depicted in the painting’s background.
