Acrylic on Canvas, 36” x 48” This detailed portrait of a Crow Indian warrior provides various insights into the creation of both a headpiece and breastplate. Warriors decorated their headpieces with the ermine, fur and feathers of animals they strove to imitate. The courageous, fearless and even wily spirit of the badger, the wolverine, the buffalo, and birds of prey all spoke to the warrior’s way of thinking as he prepared his mind and body for a campaign against rival tribes. The looping breastplate, made of bone (similar to heishi beads) and large shells, sheds light on the trading relationships the Crow had with various tribes that were located closer to the Pacific Ocean.
