When we knew we might have the opportunity to film there, I watched the scenes at the racetrack several times and I recognised that for a single image story to be successful, there had to be a definitive sense of place. The mountainous backdrop to the circuit defines it as much the 1950s buildings scattered around the pit area.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the movie, Matt Damon plays Carroll Shelby enlisted by Ford to try and compete on the racetrack with Ferrari. The film reaches its climax at Le Mans in 1966 where Shelby’s car gets the better of Ferrari. It seemed appropriate therefore to bring a 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 350 as our principal prop in this period tableau.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut our ambitions were high and our large cast was led by Cindy Crawford who I knew would own her role as a triumphant racer. She always delivers and has such presence in this photograph. It is always validating to work with her and our commitment to our craft is never higher than on these occasions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTwo days before we shot, I found myself sitting near Christian Bale at a West Hollywood restaurant and I remembered how integral he was to the movie. I knew a Texan model who could play to that vibe and my instincts were to quickly drag him in at the last moment. He slipped in the space behind Cindy and I think he elevates the image. It’s the little things.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMotor racing enthusiasts will also see “The King” Richard Petty behind the car on the right. Richard, who won the Daytona 500 seven times, was a joy to have on set and added to the freewheeling joy of the day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe title of this photograph is fitting as Cindy Crawford and I were both born in 1966. Founded in Detroit, Michigan by Henry Ford in 1903, the voting structure means that it has been in continuous family control for over 100 years, despite being a public company. Today it remains one of the largest family-controlled companies in the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHenry Ford is rightly recognised as one of America’s great industrialists and the early car models, like the mass-produced Ford Model T, changed how Americans travelled and lived. Two generations later, in the 1960s, Ford challenged Ferrari’s dominance in the racing car marketplace; an unlikely story that was well chronicled in the movie Ford v Ferrari.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome of the scenes from that film were shot at Willow Springs race circuit in California and we were excited to have access to this location to tell our own Ford racing division stories.\u003cbr\u003eThe 1967 Ford GT40 MK111 sits strikingly low to the ground and I saw an opportunity to pair the car with Cindy Crawford’s long legs. Hopefully the visual mismatch would then serve to highlight and showcase the beauty of both subjects.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCindy is one of the brightest of the lead supermodels since the 1980s and role playing is hardly a challenge for her. Meanwhile I suspect that Jimmie Johnson - one of the most successful NASCAR racers of all time - is also a performing artist in his spare time. The camera likes him and he likes the camera. The two American stars lives had not crossed until that day in Willow Springs, but they worked well together in this set and this photograph is certainly a keeper. team by the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles and it has had some proper history; it was originally gifted to Henry Ford II by Enzo Ferrari. Ford only kept the car for a few years, apparently long enough for it to influence the styling of Ford Motor Company's 1955 Thunderbird.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis corporate mischief was a prelude to a far greater drama 10 years later. Henry Ford II's passion for car racing drove his ambition for Ford Motor Company to start competing in races and he also knew that Ford needed a marketing boost in the face of slipping sales and stiff competition from GM, especially when it came to attracting younger buyers. The only problem was, Ford didn’t have a sports racing car in its fleet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, in 1963, Henry Ford II (the grandson and namesake of the company's founder) decided that the quickest way to get Ford on the racetrack would be to try to buy Ferrari. They offered $10m, but with such stifling conditions on racing budgets that Enzo Ferrari did not like, that he leveraged the Ford approach to do a deal with Fiat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis drama was expertly chronicled in the 2019 biographical sports drama Ford v Ferrari starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale. The director, James Mangold, filmed some sequences at the Willow Springs race circuit outside LA which retains an authentic 1950s vibe, so we decided to do the very same.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShanina Shaik was not in Ford v Ferrari but perhaps she should have been. For starters we had the unmodernised track that featured in some of the sets from Ford v Ferrari and then in the Ferrari hot seat, we had managed to source a driver who looks the spitting image of Christian Bale’s character in the movie. We then threw in two top models from LA as Ferrari pit girls and then, of course, a stunning vintage Ferrari from the 1950s. Some college kids from USC and appropriately dressed friends from West Hollywood then added flavour to the background narrative.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe had optionality on our side and I like that. There is a rather austere mood to the location; we could have been in Stuttgart on a bleak winter’s day, except I don’t think I could have persuaded Cindy Crawford to make that long a trip. Luckily, we have the best craftsmen in our studio who can bring out the shadow detail without losing the detail in the highlights. Both Jimmie and Shanina enjoyed themselves that morning at Willow Springs racetrack in California and I think it shows. From my own selfish perspective, Jimmie had to focus slightly on slowing down before he ran me over and I guess he could be forgiven for having his eyes elsewhere. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI want to thank Sam Byrne of Cross Harbour Capital for facilitating this shoot. Sitting proudly at nearly 7,000 feet, with the notorious Eiger mountain towering above it, this grand old hotel has, for 185 years, offered unparalleled bedroom visuals. Its decor and design have an Agatha Christie vibe and its location a James Bond one. Anyone with a visual sensibility recognises immediately that there is nothing remotely normal about this place. Its existence is testimony to Swiss ambition and engineering prowess eight or nine generations ago.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI had pondered and iterated for some months as to how to do justice to the location. There were a few easy decisions such as filming in the winter and to position my camera far enough back from the right-hand wing of the hotel to give the structure room to breathe and, in so doing, convey a necessary sense of isolation and scale. I knew that the end frame demanded perfect compositional balance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut delivering a legitimate foreground narrative was more challenging. The north Face of the Eiger has claimed 64 lives since 1937 and is something of a “Holy Grail” for mountaineers who get a rush from the implicit risk and danger. The setting draws in risk takers and thrill seekers and that was ultimately the angle I focused on. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI sensed that an old European roulette table would not only play on risk taking well, but it would also double down on the James Bond vibe that the setting evokes. I wanted to reinforce the message that is not only a hotel where guests have literally and metaphorically lived on the edge, but also a destination that attracts those who live fast paced and glamorous lives.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe missing link in this layered story were the protagonists and I knew that they would be critical to the whole piece. If they fell short, the picture would fail. It was that simple. David Gandy is a bankable asset in any picture, that is why he has been the face of Dolce and Gabbana for so many years and, for a still camera, there is a very creditable 007 look. Meanwhile, our old Austrian friend Nadine Leopold - with her femininity, grace and intelligence - adds to any story. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy sense was always that this vignette needed to be taken as close to twilight as possible;
