Perhaps best known for his radiant landscapes, Robert (Bob) Rohm’s paintings reflect the brilliance of the colors found in the clear, bright light of the Southwest. Although his work contains an enormous amount of detail, those details are transformed as he translates the world around him. “Poetry in the landscape means to impart a feeling for a scene rather than just to illustrate it—to engage the viewer’s imagination.” This sense of poetry lends an almost abstract nature to his work.
Rohm grew up in rural south- central Pennsylvania, where he frequently “fooled around with art” but didn’t initially receive encouragement to pursue art as a serious career option. When 12 years old, he accompanied an aunt to an exhibit of impressionist paintings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “It was like a light switching on,” Bob recalls, and the idea of becoming an artist took root. At the age of 18, Rohm entered a three-year program at the York Academy of Arts (now the Art Institute of York—Pennsylvania), where he focused on illustration and graphic arts. Upon graduation, he went to work in the film and video industry. The work ultimately brought him, his wife Lynn, and their children to Texas in 1982. It wasn’t until 1990, that he was able to focus his attention on painting full-time and has remained true to this once ‘unlikely’ career option.
Bob has received many awards and is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, Oil Painters of America and the Outdoor Painters Society. The author of the book THE PAINTERLY APPROACH, he has also been featured in many publications including Southwest Art, American Artist, The Artist’s Magazine, The Pastel Journal, International Artist and Pure Color.
