I liked the idea of building some final frontier sets but that in itself is hardly groundbreaking. Sure, we gave the saloon a name that referred to Montana’s celebrity guests, but that did not quench my thirst. This was an opportunity to push a few boundaries.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eUltimately three decisions coalesced to make the difference and turn an idea into something of which we are all proud. The first was the styling: we hired for Ciara the best we know - Mariel Haenn and her partner Rob Zangardi, in LA. Mariel styles Cara Delevingne and so works with us regularly. I gave her team a simple directive - “post-Civil War badass”. Mariel and Rob don’t need much more than that and Ciara looks ridiculously good and on point. Meanwhile, for Russell’s stylist Alicia Sereno, she did a first class job of making Russell look every bit as badass as Ciara. They both owned their looks.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe second call was to shoot in a rainstorm - an unrelenting one. As a storyteller, I have always enjoyed inclement weather, but I knew we would have to make the rain, not ask Russell and Ciara to wait for a storm mid-summer. I studied the rain scenes from Paul Greengrass’s recent western - News of the World - with Tom Hanks and the effect added such mood and textural detail to Hanks’ face and clothes that I could not remove the prompt from my head. To use rain in this shot was a good decision.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe third decision was, of course, to set the building on fire. This is not an easy thing to do from a practical perspective and it meant shooting at night to make the most of the effect. But again, the decision paid off - perhaps a little better than we could have imagined.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eRussell and Ciara make for strong doubles for Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington in Tarantino’s bad ass western “Django Unchained”. On this one occasion, I believe that I can get away with the reference, albeit Django burnt down a plantation mansion in Mississippi, not a saloon on the banks of the Madison River in Montana. They are both legends in their respective careers, but their legacy may lie in what they have done to champion and support good causes helping others living less than ideal lives.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFor this shoot, I took the Seattle Seahawks quarterback and his wife to my favourite shooting location in the world - the Pioneer Bar - high up in the mountains of West Montana. I wanted to be in command of as much as possible and with my intimate knowledge of the location, I knew I could muster together a smorgasbord of western archetypes to complement the rock star American couple. I also know the lighting and the angles inside out. It was a home fixture for me.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMy preconception was to build a vignette that lived and breathed cinema whilst playing on the importance of cultural refinement in the Wild West. To that end, I thought it would be playful to dress Russell and Ciara in black tie so as to accentuate the narrative. Finding the extras was easy - they are mostly drinking buddies.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere are no weak characters in this shot; there is simply no room for them. In fashioning together so many ethnicities, I hope his photograph celebrates the diversity of America and reminds us that the pursuit of the American Dream was, and is, inclusive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRevlon Ambassadors have been filmed in many locations, but perhaps none offer the storied past of the Pioneer Bar. At events such as the Olympics in Calgary and the World Ski Championships in Crans Montana, the downhills were the Blue Riband events and the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel and the Lauberhorn in Wengen, classic one off downhill races, were regular fixtures in my January calendar.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut the goal on those occasions was to take tight action pictures of the winning skier, not necessarily to evoke a sense of place. It was a genuine test of camera skills not only because of the speed of the racers but also the accompanying weather conditions. I had my successes and I had my failures, but the photographs often lost immediate relevance as the press would simply look forward to the next race rather than dwelling on the last one.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e35 years later my goal for this project was to employ a broader narrative and play on a sense of scale and contrast; the constant grandeur of our planet against the ephemeral skier. I wanted to tell a tale of man and mountain, where the former is dwarfed by the latter and in so doing, I could hopefully glorify both. The skier could have a degree of anonymity as he was just part of the story, not the whole story.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI know my ski courses and had my mind set on this spot on the famous Val Gardena downhill in the Dolomites. The first jump, a third of the way down the course, gave me the chance to have a skier flying through the thin alpine air with the region’s highest mountain offering the most grand of backdrops. I had great fortune with the heavy snowfall the night before the race, as it transformed the whole amphitheatre, including the imposing rock face, into a fresh winter wonderland.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJared Goldberg - a member of the US ski team and a resident of Salt Lake City, Utah - is the skier in this image. He finished in the top 10 that stunning day in Val Gardena. I am in awe of his bravery, as I am with all downhill racers. It was an emotional evening and one that I felt privileged to watch, alongside Marián’s friends and family.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e48 hours previously, Marián was joined by two other Chicago “Hall of Famers”, Chris Chelios and Denis Savard, and nine other Blackhawks stars to collaborate with me on an idea that had been marinating in my mind for some time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy concept was to merge in unity, two of Chicago’s most precious possessions, its architecture and its beloved Blackhawks. This is a proud city and Chicago-ites hold these assets close to their hearts. I had pondered over the composition for a few weeks but knew the city and the path of the river well enough to know my spot.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy creative leaning was to play around with the idea of a Last Supper, after all, Chicago is also renowned for its food and a play on the masterpiece legitimised a reason for the player positions. I also wanted to build a sense of the cold into the narrative but this didn’t need much effort as it was freezing on the river on that winter night.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI had never previously met any of these sportsmen but was most impressed by their charm and enthusiasm for the project, which will raise funds for disadvantaged former players. I know some of these guys are very famous but they wear their fame with the lightest of touch. Founded in 1854, it seemingly hasn’t changed much in 170 years and if the walls could talk, it would - “to be sure” - be one very long monologue.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe interior is a museum of the Irish in Manhattan and the joint has such a discernible vibe that Martin Scorsese and his crew did their press briefings for The Gangs of New York in the front bar. In the Great War, young soldiers heading to Europe in 1917, left a turkey wish bone on a wire above the bar; the bones of those who never returned still hang there in front of various JFK memorabilia.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe pub has been in the same Irish family hands for three generations and I was honoured to discover that the current custodian - Gregory - was a collector of my\u003cbr\u003ework. Naively, we tried to visit him on St Patrick’s Day, but couldn’t get within 200 yards of the pub. The next day, we had more luck and I was charmed not just by\u003cbr\u003eGregory, but by the whole vibe of the joint. It is a truly special place and I knew I had to film there.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI didn’t have long to wait for the opportunity as John McEnroe - one of the most loved and talented of all American sporting legends and a truly uncompromising New Yorker - had agreed to be filmed by me in the city. Although the McEnroes are of Irish origin and therefore McSorley’s seemed like an appropriate destination, the reason that the location made sense went far deeper than that; John personifies the gritty, uncompromising New Yorker who fights for what he believes to be right - he always has. My leaning was the sawdust laden floors of McSorley’s offered a far more appropriate platform to film this blunt, quintessential, street fighter than some smart Upper East side Italian restaurant or cocktail bar. We were going Irish and tough.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMcEnroe’s most famous rebuke to an umpire was the “you cannot be serious” line and I thought those words somewhere in McSorley’s - no matter how incongruous they would be to the rest of the décor - would complement John well. I asked him to bring his Gibson guitar and not a tennis racket, as music now defines him as much tennis and besides, we did give a nod to his rival Bjorn Borg in the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were on a creative roll now and I sensed we could add further to the visual overload. The band Village People seemed like a good additive, after-all, we were in the Village and they were of the McEnroe Borg era. Then, since we were playing to a sense of community, I thought we may as well throw in a lady of the night. Luckily Vivian from Pretty Woman was on hand to help.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is a bar full of Village People, which is what McSorley’s presumably was in 1854. McEnroe looks pure Rock and Roll bad ass. I was delighted and honoured that she agreed to be part of our sporting legends series.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMikaela dates another skiing superstar - Norway’s downhill legend - Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and they train in the summer in his home country. I saw this as my opportunity as we have strong contacts in Oslo and I felt that we could do something a little different. It would be rather lame to photograph Mikaela on a ski slope.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eNorway has a strong heritage not just in skiing but in Polar exploration with Roald Amundsen being the first man to reach the North and South Poles. My leaning was to throw Mikaela into an explorer’s base camp and create a narrative hinting at both the extreme conditions and the fortitude of the protagonists. After all, her extraordinary career has often been played out in the toughest of winter conditions. Mikaela has many attributes, but her physical and mental strength define her, and I have absolutely no doubt that she could have led any polar expedition 110 years ago.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI asked her to give me a look of sovereignty and leadership in that hut and it came naturally. Aleksander, sitting immediately to her left, knows that the group are in safe hands. I wanted to tell a wider story than simply acknowledging his skiing achievements no matter how estimable they may be.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAlex is an elite athlete who cuts a suave and refined figure. I thought we could create some visual tension if he was surrounded by archetypal explorers from the Amundsen days, all boasting ice coated beards and a weathered look: so giving a nod to their uncompromising lifestyle and the conditions they endure.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere was not much light to play with on set in Oslo, but just enough to play on the facial detail of each explorer. They look a formidable ensemble. The good thing about doing this shoot in Norway, is that extras are not hard to find.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe Norwegians are a tough bunch and they do some things far better than other nations in the world - alpine sport and polar exploration being two. Norwegians are known for their mastery of winter sports - especially skiing - but success at tennis was unexpected, much like the early Viking expeditions to the West.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe setting for this photograph was the small community of Gudvangen in western Norway. I was attracted to the steepest of the fjord ́s mountains which allowed me to frame the scene naturally and I knew that there was a ready supply of extras from the nearby faux Viking\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eVillage which attracts thousands of tourists every day. My instincts were for a busy bar - with a very clear nod to where we were. I want to thank many locals for coming along - including seemingly the whole of the Staubach family. Ahead of our show in Oslo in late September, we have spent some time in Norway photographing some of their stars and the opportunity to work with Casper was a treat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe is the most likeable and modest of sport stars, especially given his position in the world rankings, and is single handedly creating a tennis boom in the country. As we have seen with Croatia and football, success begets success and that makes his career and legacy very relevant in Norway. It happened in Sweden a generation ago and Casper is aware of the responsibility his success has bestowed upon him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to play on the relationship between the player and those that follow him with the intensity that only sport can deliver. The end of every rally can elicit almost identical emotions in both protagonist and fan - whether that emotion be opened mouthed elation or head in hands disappointment. The bigger the point, the bigger the emotion, and therefore the sense of behavioural harmony is amplified.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy preconception was that this photograph should be cinematic and, in my pondering, I had an idea as to what would work in the background. It needed to be abstract to lead the eye to Casper, but it also needed to inform. The backdrop of the Renaissance revival styled facade of the grand old place immediately locates the course and this is helpful to a storyteller. Very few country music stars have circumvented the Cowboy Bar. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI see it primarily as a place of the night, not the day; the fabled neon lights mark the epicentre of a community that retains an understated cowboy charm despite the huge wealth that sits in the Teton amphitheater. I have only ever photographed the facade of this bar in the middle of the night - it just seems the right option.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn this occasion, my creative leaning was to tell a 1970s music story with the nighttime facade of the bar as my backdrop.  After all, little has changed here since the 1970s and this is a music venue first and foremost.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe VW bus was an obvious starting prop, but perhaps less likely was my choice of band leader - the American sporting icon - John McEnroe.  John is a passionate guitarist, so I knew this role would appeal to his forever engaged mind.  He was also something of a cowboy when it came to showing deference to authority in the tennis world. John brought the Wild West to Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows, so it was a natural fit at several levels. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI believe that my Jackson 4 caught the right vibe that night and the falling snow adds to the sense of place. I would imagine that back in the day many cowboys would have paid good money to swap with John and be on the road with these girls. It offers a backdrop to hundreds of “selfies” every day and its longevity as an institution has allowed it to be permanently woven into the fabric of Americana. Very few country music stars have circumvented the Cowboy Bar. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI see it primarily as a place of the night, not the day; the fabled neon lights mark the epicentre of a community that retains an understated cowboy charm despite the huge wealth that sits in the Teton amphitheater. I have only ever photographed the facade of this bar in the middle of the night - it just seems the right option.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn this occasion, my creative leaning was to tell a 1970s music story with the nighttime facade of the bar as my backdrop.  After all, little has changed here since the 1970s and this is a music venue first and foremost.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe VW bus was an obvious starting prop, but perhaps less likely was my choice of band leader - the American sporting icon - John McEnroe.  John is a passionate guitarist, so I knew this role would appeal to his forever engaged mind.  He was also something of a cowboy when it came to showing deference to authority in the tennis world. John brought the Wild West to Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows, so it was a natural fit at several levels. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI believe that my Jackson 4 caught the right vibe that night and the falling snow adds to the sense of place. I would imagine that back in the day many cowboys would have paid good money to swap with John and be on the road with these girls. It is a scene that has been painted many times, but I had not seen a photograph with a revisionist take of what the links may have looked like when golfers played “The Old Course” the other way around, as they did in the 19th century. The goal was to be greedy and include important landmarks such as the Swilcan Bridge and this demanded an intricate composition.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI knew who my lead would be, the iconic Gary Player, nine times a Major winner and three times Open Champion. If it were just a simple stretch of sand dunes by the sea, it would be lauded, and yet the course has hosted four British Opens since 1977, starting with the famous “Duel in the Sun” with Nicklaus and Watson.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe Ailsa Course was established in 1901 and its majestic hotel by the railway line opened for business five years later. They complement and elevate each other as well as any such relationship in the world. It is a truly symbiotic partnership and one that encouraged the current President of the United States to buy both assets from Dubai based owners in 2014.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eI thought it was time to take President Trump’s great friend, Gary Player, back to the place he loves and celebrate the longevity of both himself and Turnberry.
