It’s an occupational hazard of being on the road in the company we keep. But we do say that we are exhaustive in our research. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWe tend to look for one transcending feature in a bar and on this occasion, in the legendary cowboy town of Miles City in eastern Montana, we found a 100-year 18ft tall oak Brunswick back bar. It would not have looked out of place in the smartest dining clubs of the early days of Wall Street. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe owner of the Montana bar was more than open to a film crew coming to his bar on a wintry Sunday, but given Covid restrictions we had to think smart in the execution. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere are many parts to this vignette. All are needed, as I really wanted the room to be full of characters without losing the detail of the bar. After all, that was the reason we were there. The composition therefore needed to be very precise and all the talent had to listen acutely to directions - which in a couple of cases was a big ask. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut we got there in the end I think. Everyone did a grand job, including the four-legged poker player with the killer hand. At the most extreme level this can evoke a sense of trespassing. This was very much the narrative behind this photograph. To be greeted by an overtly territorial crew with menace and attitude.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut for the story to work, two things had to coalesce as one - the characters and the interior. I like playing with the cold, it adds a visceral layer to the story and in this case, it hints at an outpost on the final frontier. Surely the further off the beaten track we travel, the greater the chance of being the outsider.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a frame that exhausts every inch available in the camera and that was my intent. There were so many characters I wanted to include, but I was also reluctant to lose the mood of the frozen saloon. The icicles on the frosty bison with the snow laden television playing True Grit were key assets that needed to be seen to amplify the sense of cold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur key asset was, of course, Cindy Crawford and she had to have sovereignty of the joint. She can play a badass very well and that was her ascribed role. It is not easy for everything to come together in such a tight setting as one tension spot can ruin the whole pastiche. It’s akin to camels and the eye of the needle. The wolf ’s paw on this occasion came very close to Cindy’s shot glass, but we got away with it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wolf is actually a domestic dog breed called tamaskan - he is not 100% wolf, but that mattered little, as he merely added to the sense of trespass. The only reason to linger in this bar would appear to be the landlady. Maybe she could be won over? The area is so remote that we doubt it has been used as a film location before, certainly not with an American icon as the lead player. The only traffic was the occasional oil worker or perhaps someone that was totally lost. The next big event north of here is the Canadian border and that’s some 300 miles away. It is not a place to run out of gas.\n\u003cp\u003eCindy makes the picture for sure. The styling is perfect and there is a such a good energy cowgirl chic in her manner. This was the intent in the preconception - the two companions were enjoying the freedom of the vastness of the American West.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sense of place is palpable. This is the America that so many know and love, with its long roads running to the horizon with either side exuding a simple sense of calm and solitude. No other country in the world offers road trips as visually rewarding as America and they are integral to the fabric of the American dream.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe snowfall the previous night added another layer to the narrative both on the road itself and on the prairies. We were lucky that the snow stopped and the light picked up. After all, there are many other weathered saloons in the West. We don’t want to be repetitive in our story telling. That would be lame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eEqually, for our work, The Pioneer is emphatically the best bar known to us. It has depth and the wagon wheel on the ceiling is ideally positioned. More importantly, it is home turf for us and last year I was honoured to receive “The Freedom of the City”. I have the key in my briefcase. The owner of The Pioneer partners with us rather than simply permiting us and that is a material difference.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBut when we go back each winter, it is important to bring a new variable to offer the chance of an image that can transcend. There is no point going backwards. My new variable this time was Cara Delevingne and her established team of stylists and hair and make-up artists. To bring such a celebrated and relevant woman as Cara to Montana is fresh ground. Put her in front of the Eiffel Tower and it is a new look on the Eiffel Tower.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI gave her team a directive for this shot: bad ass; sexy; sovereign; 1920s but still very much Cara. They absolutely nailed it, as did she. The hat made a huge difference. I can’t think of any other woman in the world I would prefer to play this role.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThese are not easy images to execute as there is such limited light. Depth of field and shutter speeds are therefore compromised. Cara would always be sharp - that was easy - then we had to hope for some luck elsewhere. Cameras have improved so much over the years in terms of ability to work in low light. I could not have done this 10 years ago. So much so, that there have been many retakes and parodies. As we all know, it featured a 26-year-old Crawford pulling up to the Halfway Café in a red sports car wearing a white tank top and jean shorts. Two young boys stare as the supermodel buys a Pepsi from a vending machine and drinks it down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor some time I had yearned to do my own interpretation of the advert with a still photograph and I secured Cindy’s involvement, who in turn secured Pepsi’s approval (given the implicit tribute, why would Pepsi say “no”?). The Halfway House has not changed at all from 1992 and neither really has Cindy. The rest of the props were easy to replicate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe issue was the two boys who were never in the same frame as Cindy in the advert and would be even harder to acknowledge or incorporate into one photograph whilst maintaining the narrative. The idea I went along with was to use wolves instead - that way I could introduce a new angle without losing the integrity of the adaptation. \u003cbr\u003eWhy wolves? Well it is a metaphor for all the men who have wanted to be at that gas station the next time Cindy Crawford turned up to fill up with gas, or indeed buy a soft drink. I wanted them to be looking keenly towards Cindy and the only way that could work in my set was to have them approaching her from behind. Since the roof was down in the car, it made total sense for them to have stealthily sneaked into the back seats whilst she went about her business. There is the necessary hunger and yearning in their disposition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCindy looks fabulous and makes the image which we all agreed had to be in colour. I must make mention of Peter Savic - the legendary hair stylist who worked with Cindy on the original commercial. One I knew Cindy would excel in.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn the weeks running up to the shoot, I played around with a few possible narratives and I was drawn to the concept of a film set within a film set. I had long admired Peter Lindberg’s work for the Breitling Squad campaign which also played on this theme and I also knew how Hollywood always enjoys work showcasing itself. The nod to Peter Lindberg was apposite as he and Cindy often collaborated together to great effect.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt dawned on me that those with cameras could be press men as opposed to film makers and the narrative could lean on the intense media interest Hollywood stars have long received. Since the Press tend to hang as a pack, I could play on that and throw in a wolf. The premise was that the vignette should live and breathe cinema.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMy instincts were that Cindy should be enjoying the attention and her face should glow, not scowl. Over the years I have learnt that she is very comfortable playing a role and the look certainly works here.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe still cameraman in the photograph is Dimitri Dimitrov - Sunset Tower’s much loved and celebrated Maître D. He has had so many cameo roles in Hollywood over the years and I did not want to miss out. It has been my best-selling image of the last two years and I understand why it resonates with so many collectors. The rich “wild west” characters speak for themselves and every face is the right face. For those that own a bad ass bar, this is the badass picture to adorn the wall. I have never had the privilege of meeting him, but his iconic picture of half a wolf’s head jutting out from behind a tree is widely ascribed as a key moment in the history of wildlife photography. This was the day when transcending wildlife photography started to be regarded as art.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am a fine art photographer, not a wildlife photographer, and so I sit somewhere in the middle of this debate. I don’t use long lenses unless I absolutely have to – polar bears and tigers being two cases in which they are helpful. Telephoto lenses compress the image and with it the chance of capturing something deeply evocative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI do find many wildlife photographs very dull. It is not enough to see an animal and then photograph it – that is akin to google mapping and it is not art. Many wildlife photographers fall into the trap of believing that documentation is enough and it is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis image is deliberately reductive and there is no lofty ambition. But therein lies its strength. It is a paradox that white is such a strong colour and it is probably at its best in abstract imagery with no depth of focus. The limited depth of field allows the subject to pop and give the viewer no cause to be distracted. Less can be more when the objective is portraiture rather than storytelling or decisive moment photography.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIntuitively a portrait of a beautiful wolf should follow the same principles of glamour photography because the wolf is such a glamorous animal and that attribute must be emphasised above all others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe clarity of this image – given the limited available light – would not have been possible a few years ago. I think it offers an insight into the animal’s soul.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe is simply being an alpha wolf. All those that ply Jim’s trade have much to thank him for – after all that single image – which can never be repeated – elevated the business of taking top tier wildlife imagery to an art form that was collectable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often ask myself to articulate what was so special about his photograph. I tend to home in on the simplicity of the image as well as its menace and the rule breaking incompleteness. It nails the character of the animal and the behavior that defines it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWolves may indeed have menace , but they are also unquestionably beautiful. I can’t compete with the Brandenburg shot and nor when I went to Montana, did I want to even try. There is no mileage on borrowing ideas, but I recognised the power of simplicity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are two aspects of my picture that make it quite special. Firstly, the limited depth of field brings every human eye to the wolves eyes – this was mathematically necessary as the low early morning light required opening up the lens aperture, but it was also the way to play the idea. A nice coincidence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe other aspect to me is that the wolf is such a smart and focused animal and therefore I wanted to be sure that he was portrayed with crystal clear focus too. We prepared for many months as it was clear to me that if we were to pay homage to The Wolf of Wall Street, we had to do it well. There was no point in doing it in a casual way - after all, Martin Scorsese is one of my heroes and his framing is so exceptional that we had to be at the top of our game not to materially underachieve in any recreation. It was the biggest production of my career.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe location of the abandoned office in Simi Valley outside Los Angeles was ideal for most of the cast - including Jordan Belfort - the real Wolf of Wall Street, but not so ideal for the wolves, as there was no working air conditioning inside. This meant importing huge AC units to keep the animals cool. The green room on the side of the dealing floor was transformed into a giant fridge for the day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe final image is one of the most satisfying of my career. I wanted as many references to the film as possible - Cameron Dallas eating the goldfish, Jordan with his pen, the marching band, the dollar notes and the glitter. Both models - Kate Bock and Daniela Braga - smashed it in their roles, not easy with so much going on and a wolf charging down the table. Both Kate and Dany are at the top of their game and pivotal to this photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSomeone once said that the best pictures can be looked at for a very long time. On that level, this image wins. However, the key for me was to find out what the world’s most celebrated actor thought of this one snap shot in time. Without his approval, this photograph would lose some of its relevance. I was proud when he told me that it captured the very essence of Belfort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe did it and I feel that we left nothing in the bucket in the conception and the execution. Sunset Boulevard emblematic of Hollywood - it needed to be familiar to all and have some depth. After a great deal of walking up and down, we chose a spot 200 yards east of the entrance to Chateau Marmont, because the billboards looking west were large and well positioned and the hotel and the hotel sign are so iconic. The bend in the road also helped give the frame a compositional balance that I could not find on other sections - such as Sunset Plaza. In my head it was always going to be a wide angle shot.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo shut the road down meant shooting first thing on a Sunday morning - which worked as we knew the best light would be sunrise if we were shooting towards the Pacific. Equally, I did not want the sun to rise too much as it would be tough on both the wolf and the model’s eyes. Of course, the model was not your run of the mill model - it was Alessandra Ambrosio - one of the world’s most photographed women. She has a very special look and is so easy to work with. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is as I wanted - very LA, very West Hollywood and jammed with reference points. It’s a little crazy, a little La La Land, but that was the goal. Most of all, to the best of my knowledge, it’s authentic. They are believed to have murdered at least nine police officers and four civilians. They were killed in May 1934 during a police ambush.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBonnie and Clyde - the 1967 American biographical crime film starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the title characters - was a landmark film and won two Oscars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is considered one of the first films of the New Hollywood as it broke many cinematic taboos and for some members of the counterculture, the film was considered to be a \"rallying cry”. This was not hard as 100,000 people once lived here and the winter evenings were long.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCraps as a game lends itself to still photography more than roulette and poker because the players can crowd around the end of the table as one player throws the dice vaguely in the direction of the cameraman. It worked in the promo stills for Ocean's Eleven - so it may as well work in the Silver Dollar too. The key is that everyone at the end of the table must - for focusing purposes - be the same distance from the camera. There is no depth of field inside and a two inch disparity will mean that the focus on the transgressor is out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKate Bock is made for the Sharon Stone look from the film Casino and Daniela Braga does not take a bad picture. The idea of a layered narrative using great American vistas has worked and the concept is now known. Best of all no one can really copy us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn January 2020 we returned again to Montana, partly because we have a network of local contacts and fixers that deliver both logistical precision on the ground and access to the best locations, but mostly because the canvas on which to tell stories is so rich in potential. Montana does stand out for us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur focus this time was the historic frontier mining town of Butte. I have long had an obsession with the frontier settlements and Butte is visually one of the best because it straddles a hill. Between 1900 - 1950 the town represented a microcosm of final frontier life in the Wild West. It was a hill that was once so rich in minerals, that Butte became known locally as “The Richest Hill in the World”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy readings on the town told me of a storied past of felons and outlaws - there were both murders and hangings on a regular basis. There were also no doubt many honourable men, but also many with the cunning of a wolf. It was a rich place and as always with that wealth came glamourous women.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn my creative processing, coupling a wolf with the glamour of Daniela Braga could give a nod to the hill’s heyday when everything was possible for everyone. In cities and town across America these establishments can still be visited, but precious few remain unchanged from the 1920s. In the old copper mining town of Butte, Western Montana, our team found a real gem through a concealed door and then down two sets of stairs. It was dark, cold and dusty, but it was authentic.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn its hey day of copper production, Butte was home to 100,000 people and the town sat on what was then called \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e“The Richest Hill In The World\"\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. Now just 30,000 folk remain and many of the buildings are totally abandoned. This particular “Speakeasy\" must have been very busy at the weekend 100 years ago. My imagination ran wild as to what may have gone on - if only those walls could have talked.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe space was about as good as it gets for a staged shot and given that the poker table was still there, I did not have to reach too far in my creative processing. The models - Daniela Braga and Kate Bock did a brilliant job playing their roles as they always do. But so also did the wolf and indeed the whole cast. As for the game itself, the wolf had to be holding aces and eights - Dead Man’s hand. That was a no brainer from the start.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut I want to thank the whole community in Butte Montana for their support during the filming. It was a true collaboration and they made us all feel very much at home - not easy as Butte is one of the most quirky places I have ever been too. This puts pressure on both the construction and the casting, as one lame character can become a tension point and ruin the whole image. We have all experienced the difficulty of group pictures on Christmas Day or Thanksgiving.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar selfie works so well, not just because of the number of people in the image, but because every character is an additive. It is my favourite selfie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe assembled a strong cast - the models Kate Bock from Cleveland and Olivia Culpo from Charlotte, native American families from Northern Montana and then, of course, my favourite local mountain men. There were two possible solutions - to move the story further away from the building, which would risk disassociation, or to get close to the building with a wide-angle lens, not easy at all and could risk ending with a lousy series of far lit loose shots. The whole building would be in for sure, but to work with a 28mm lens and a wolf is not to play the percentages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe had no real choice but to go for the second option and roll the dice. We got lucky, but as someone once said “Luck is the residue of design”. It is such an iconic stretch of road that has played host to Hollywood stars and their cars for generations. The stretch heading west from Chateau Marmont to the Sunset Plaza is a rich feast for filmmakers, framed on either side with enormous billboards. Sunset Boulevard takes people on their own American dream - it is difficult not to feel energised when driving on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut it is far from easy to photograph here - it is a busy highway and the only time it can be closed down for filming tends to be early on a Sunday morning. Furthermore, to be able to use wolves in the car – integral to the theme of the series - West Hollywood was out of bounds as they do not allow the use of exotic animals in outdoor filming. Hollywood, however, does and the boundary line is right by Chateau Marmont.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo an extent, this made our choice of location relatively straightforward. Including the Chateau billboards or the Chateau itself would locate the image emphatically. The Castle On Sunset, as it is now affectionately known, is notorious - conjuring up imagery of sex, drugs and general bad behaviour. This is not a place that lends itself to reserved or quiet weekends. I saw a narrative that played to this reputation - and this demanded a frame that was both suggestive and sexy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlessandra Ambrosio is synonymous with the Victoria’s Secret brand. The Brazilian model has been pivotal to their shows and campaigns for years and I was delighted that she agreed to work with me. As always, I want to thank my dear friend Ed Razek - who helped make this possible. Alessandra is a stunning woman and very suited to the 1970’s look we styled her in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wolves were not easy to work with and we only had a limited opportunity between sunrise and 10 am when our permit expired. Chicago is the home of the mobster and I was determined to capture the mood of the Al Capone and Prohibition era in a single frame. To my mind this demanded a location canvas that could substantiate the narrative. I homed in on the old Italian Neighbourhood in Chicago - where thousands of Italians used to live in the 1920s and 1930s. Around 24th street and Oakley, it was a tight knit community with roots in Tuscan towns such as Lucca.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn an intersection on 24th Street there is a well-known Italian restaurant - Bruna’s, that was around at the time of Al Capone. Bruna - an Italian lady - owned the joint for many years and allegedly had fatally knifed a couple of customers during her tenure. Her portrait still holds court in the dining area.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI visited on the premise of being hungry and I knew immediately there was potential. The current owner - Luciano from Siena - was willing to cooperate so long as some cash changed hands and he could be an extra in the image. Both requests seemed reasonable, besides historical precedent suggests that this was no place to argue with the patrons.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe casting couch was entertaining as it was difficult to distinguish between those who were acting and those who were the real deal. I could only vouch for two of them - Luciano, on the far left of the photograph and Josie Canseco, who played her role brilliantly as she always does. The formation worked to the side of the bar - what a bunch.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAfter the shoot was wrapped, one of the mobsters - going by the name of Donny Greco - brought out his music box and we all sang Frank Sinatra and drank Italian white for an hour. Sam Mendes used it in the mobster classic - The Road to Perdition - and it has been glorified in many Batman iterations.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eChicago is urban beauty at its best and the presence of such a big building at the end of a street offers opportunities that Manhattan simply does not give. The eye is grabbed and then led deep into the vortex of Gotham.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI wanted a story that was cinematic and visceral and my founding principal was that we had to shoot at night. We could then wet the road to enhance reflections and deliver mood and use smoke machines to give the scene a gangster throwback feel. I spent a few hours in daylight on several intersections of La Salle pondering my lens selection and the right position. This aspect of the job was under my control and I had to get it right.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere was a riddle in that the Chicago Police Department was wonderful, but understandably would only close down the street after midnight, by which time the Board of Trade has switched off the flood lights on its iconic building. This was a problem and we had to move one of these variables in our favour. With some charm and a few dollars, the Board of Trade agreed to help us and the lights went back on until 4am.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI deliberately played with verticals in the composition because I felt that the retro Northern Trust sign was a useful vertical twin to the Board of Trade. There was a consistent play on height - so why not supplement this with a tall gangster and then most implausibly a tall wolf?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGreat photographs can be looked at for a long time. It just sounds like a place with an interesting past. As it is, this modest community of 1500 to the west of Livingston in Montana, is a little run down and sleepy. It is nestled between the Crazies mountain range to the north and Yellowstone to the south and most people simply pass it by.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, in trawling the internet, we discovered a saloon bar in the high street with neon signage on the facade that caught my interest. We visited the location and there was certainly potential, but clearly the shot would have to take place at night.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere was then an immediate problem, as we discovered that the bar was the central congregation point for all the mountain men - not just from Big Timber, but from far and wide. To bring a wolf and a Victoria’s Secret model to the entrance and shoot when the bar was open, was simple asking for trouble.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe only viable option was immediately obvious - to shoot at 5 am, when hopefully most of the clientele had had enough, though in Montana, one can never be sure. Normal drinking hours don't apply in this state.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs it was, we were okay and the bar owner agreed to keep the neon lights on for us. The next issue was simply that when we were in position, it was around -20 degrees - fine for the wolf, but a little chilly for California’s Josie Canseco.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShe is, however, a trooper and we got the job done. My narrative was simply that the couple had hooked up inside the bar and were rushing home. As soon as I set foot inside this treasure trove on a bleak and cold Sunday morning in January, I knew that I would have to film inside - it was effectively a microcosm of the original wild west - the centre piece being a pool table that looked as if it belonged to the gold rush era. The caved pattern in the leather rim hinted at many hours of skilled craftsmanship.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bar had never been used as a filming location before and what better person to baptise the premises than perhaps the most coveted and acclaimed American model of my generation - Cindy Crawford? \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCindy is a total professional and holds a room, but I wanted her to take a journey away from her comfort zone and play the role of “the bad ass Hustler”. When someone is asked to play a role, as opposed to model, the intelligence of the individual becomes a key variable and I know Cindy Crawford is very smart - so she killed the look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCompositionally, I knew that Cindy must be the focal point of the whole vignette and that meant placing here directly behind the pool table and then arranging the contextual characters as best as the tiny space could afford.  Every inch of the image had to sweat even before we brought in the wolf.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was an ambitious idea for sure - a wolf and Cindy Crawford playing pool in a dimly lit mountain bar in the middle of nowhere in Montana. I wanted to convey the idea that anyone from out of town entering this bar, would leave with fewer dollars in their pocket than when they arrived. The doors would not budge and she had to climb in through the broken window – but that was not a big deal for Roxanna even in tough temperatures. Flying privately makes travel comfortable and appeals to those long of cash and short of time, but to film in a private jet and merely tell a story of luxury, has always struck me as banal and creatively stiff.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eInstead, I wanted to use the tube of a private jet to tell a story of excess and bad behaviour; if jets are private, then by definition anything is permissible and the word PJ can elicit imagery of sex, drugs and rock and roll. It is not, of course, a linear relationship and most passengers on private jets are model citizens simply travelling in the most perfunctory of ways from A to B. But in the art world, I feel no need to play to percentages. I would rather have some fun and tell some stories.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMy focus was the PJ journeys that get out of hand.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe real ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ - Jordan Belfort - was not shy of excess and I persuaded him that we could build a frame around some of the infamous moments from the movie and host that aggregation in a PJ. I knew that we needed an emphatic reference to the film over and above Jordan and a wolf - and the dollar bill mule girl was core to my intended vibe.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMany will remember the scene when the Wolf of Wall Street woke from a drug fuelled flight to find himself tied to his seat by a number of seat belts. It was a novel storyline and wonderful black comedy. My sense was we could merge this vignette with the dollar mule girl and build from there. Holly Graves and Josie Canseco both played their roles on the plane as well as I could have asked, especially given the amount of fun everyone was having. (Holly as the money mule and Josie as the pantomime stewardess). The concept was clear in my head, but I was wrestling with the execution, as, in a still image, it is impossible to have both the speaker and the crowd facing the camera. The idea of the back of Jordan’s head being at the front of the frame had no appeal, meanwhile excluding him from the picture altogether would weaken the narrative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut the crowd was simple to preconceive; an energy charged orgy of 1994 brokers celebrating the defiance of their leader. I wanted explicit references to the\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eexcesses of the era and the film and this demanded a testosterone jammed dealing floor hosting flying dollars, ticker tape, rubber dolls, call girls and marching bands. I always think that it is counter intuitive to downplay parody. We even managed to sneak in a Steve Madden shoe box.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe trick with Jordan was to have him on a big TV screen facing the same way as everyone else, this way the full story could be told without valuable inches being occupied by the back of Belfort’s head. America is the home of the road trip and Route 66 is its poster child. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMuch of the road that ran from Santa Monica through California, Arizona, New Mexico and then north to Chicago has either disappeared or been supplanted by interstate highways, but good sections of it do remain, as do the towns that grew up servicing the needs of those on the road. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn the autumn of 2022, I scouted for shooting locations in California and Arizona that would emphatically offer a Route 66 vibe and I found it to be a challenge. So many of the motels and diners along the route are either abandoned or worse still \u003c\/span\u003ehave become rather kitsch tourist attractions. To find a set that was both authentic and operational seemed mutually exclusive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"column\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut then I stumbled across the town of Holbrook - 100 miles east of Flagstaff in Arizona. There are some real gems in this small town and none more so than the Wigwam Motel that saddles up right next to Route 66. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWe went to see the owner - a charming man called Clifton Lewis - and he agreed to allow us to film in the courtyard outside the reception. It was ideal for what we were looking for. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Wigwam Motel is still operational and was fully occupied the night of the shoot, so some of us stayed in a properly rundown motel around the corner. My room rate was $56 which \u003c\/span\u003eI felt was perhaps $50 too expensive. But it was all so worth it. Holbrook is as good a canvas on which to tell a Route 66 story as I know; to drive through sections of the old town is to go back 60 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"column\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI chose Josie Canseco as the lead on this project as I knew she could wear a glamorous 1950s vibe very well. In the movie, players were always heavy gamblers, smokers and drinkers which contributed to the “bad boy” image of pool. There is nothing that can be sugar coated about pool; it is not an activity for the earnest or the clean living. This one is, however, gold dust. My fellow Brit Charlie March did a grand job as the rakish cowboy at the bar; he holds court in a manner that suggests he is there everyday and doesn’t really care too much about what is going on in the outside world. As long as he could have a smoke and a whisky, Nixon could do whatever he wanted. The wonderful reality is the fact that Virginia City is exactly like that. They really don’t care what happens in Washington so long as it doesn’t affect them. I was visually drawn to the two-tiered structure and the staircase connecting one to the other and I knew it could offer another layer in which to tell a story of life in a wild west bar.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI don’t think I am saying anything original when I say that focus is the key word in the vernacular of photography. Focus should deliberately include or it should deliberately exclude . When working in minimal light conditions like this old saloon, the starting premise is to know that 90% of the frame will be out of focus and to be excited rather than worried about it. It is an advantage not a disadvantage.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI think this photograph is made by the very limited depth of field not hampered by it. The cowboys in the back are pivotal to the story, but they can have anonymity as they are contextual. Meanwhile the girls and the wolf must be sharp as they lead\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ethe story. That was the hard bit, as the wolf has a spring in his step.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe two saloon girls were directed to have a look of menace and that’s exactly what they gave me. It’s difficult to play that look and keep your femininity and hats off to Brooks Nader and Holly Graves. It is how bars should be and is celebrated as such. I want the audience to say; “I wish I was in that bar that night” or even “we need more interesting people in our bar”. This frame sweats and that was always my intent.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnyone close to my camera had to be characters out of a story book and play to the lore of the wild west. I want to exaggerate not dumb things down as that helps the storyteller. In a staged image such as this, there is no need to ask permission to be creative; in fact, it is a necessary precondition.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCara Delevingne’s face is so strong and powerful that I knew there was no room for another girl on her same focal plane, but there would be room for a black wolf and then a menacing poker player. The background could then look after itself, but I wanted to pay homage to the saloon girls who are synonymous with the bar.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCara loves this image - which always matters to me. The state of Montana played an integral part in Gold Rush history.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI first visited the train in 2015 and immediately saw its potential for a staged shot. Half the window areas are open to the elements and in the winter the snow often overwhelms the decaying interior. In the following years, we took a few pictures but, in many ways, these were a dress rehearsal for November 2020. We knew our light and our angles.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTaking the female icon Cara Delevingne to a unique site like this, so far from anywhere vaguely on the map, was an opportunity not to be wasted. This is not a job for the precious, the carriage is fragile, and getting on board was not easy. There was no point in doing it in a casual way - after all, Martin Scorsese is one of my heroes and his framing is so exceptional that we had to be at the top of our game not to materially underachieve in any recreation. It was the biggest production of my career.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe location of the abandoned office in Simi Valley outside Los Angeles was ideal for most of the cast - including Jordan Belfort - the real Wolf of Wall Street, but not so ideal for the wolves, as there was no working air conditioning inside. This meant importing huge AC units to keep the animals cool. The green room on the side of the dealing floor was transformed into a giant fridge for the day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe final image is one of the most satisfying of my career. I wanted as many references to the film as possible - Cameron Dallas eating the goldfish, Jordan with his pen, the marching band, the dollar notes and the glitter. Both models - Kate Bock and Daniela Braga - smashed it in their roles, not easy with so much going on and a wolf charging down the table. Both Kate and Dany are at the top of their game and pivotal to this photograph.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSomeone once said that the best pictures can be looked at for a very long time. On that level, this image wins. However, the key for me was to find out what the world’s most celebrated actor thought of this one snap shot in time. Without his approval, this photograph would lose some of its relevance. I was proud when he told me that it captured the very essence of Belfort.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe did it and I feel that we left nothing in the bucket in the conception and the execution.
