Early Hollywood directors, such as John Ford, were known for framing their characters against the vast, harsh, and rugged natural terrain. Arguably the location scouting industry was born in the South West of America.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMonument Valley in Arizona, where we have often filmed, is probably the flagship location. But 100 miles east of there, in New Mexico, lies Shiprock - a unique towering, bird-like volcanic rock formation that can be seen for miles in all directions. It rises vertically nearly 1,600 feet above the high-desert plain of the Navajo and in my view is as impactful as any location in America. The first question though was how could we best make use of search a sight. We had to have a complementary narrative and we also had to play the light to our advantage.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOn a clear day at Shiprock, as we have learnt from experience, the light becomes suboptimal as little as 15 minutes after sunrise; it is just too strong and Shiprock itself lights up like a bonfire. The best plan is to shoot almost exactly at sunrise, allowing enough light for the characters in the narrative to have detail and not so much direct light on the rock itself. It is a fine line to get right, but I think we finally achieved it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis image smells of the great push West and the crew did a fabulous job. The cowboys we had on set were simply keeping warm, not playing to the camera. When I looked at my camera files later, I realized that we had something very strong and our galleries were very keen for the work to be released and shown to the public in America and Europe. This was never our intent, and it is the first time this situation has arisen in ten years.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe grandeur of the American West is well known and well photographed. In our minds, stunning landscapes should complement the shot, not be the shot. Layered narratives have become core to my style, we like to make a frame sweat. This image is certainly a validation of that approach.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e99% of my released work is printed in monochrome, but this print works better in color. I looked back at some of the other work we have released in color and they all have one thing in common; my shots with tigers, orangutans and now this image all have the color orange in them. Orange is not a normal color in my work, but when it features, a color print is often preferable. A black and white print simply doesn’t cope well with orange.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOn this occasion, the orange flames from the fire are such a core component of the story that to print this in monochrome would dumb down the narrative. This period saloon scene in Durango, Colorado was a big ask and I don’t think I could have made this a couple of years ago. I sense that I have learnt from my mistakes and my work has improved in dimly lit rooms like this one. This is so much more of a challenge than photographing an elephant in Kenya and the stakes are much higher. With the talent involved, we had at least $100,000 of daily rates on site, I guess it’s a case of “go big or go home”.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt is a high risk game, but this kind of shoot excites me more these days. There were so many moving parts and so many talented people not to let down. I was exhausted when I hit my bed, but I think we achieved what we set out to do - a character rich, wild west bar scene filling every inch of the frame. It is also not a scene in any bar, but the Diamond Belle saloon in Durango, Colorado. Perhaps the most authentic and celebrated 1890 bar left in the Wild West.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe key was to compose the scene with the most menacing looking characters closest to the camera. I will always have the subject closest to the camera in focus and therefore the three leads at the table are core to the image. On location on the abandoned film set of “There Will Be Blood”, we tried different combinations with a few prize-winning cows. But the reality was very clear - they are not camera friendly. In fact, they are considerably less compliant than the elephants of Amboseli, Kenya.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTo achieve this composition was a real test of the team’s patience and all my thanks go to Ryan Thompson and his fellow cowboys, who worked with great skill to engineer this frame. I was doubly appreciative, as lying on the old rail sleepers is not the most comfortable way to spend a morning. It was critical that the bull was facing me and there were no tension points with his fantastic horns.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eRail roads were so integral to the great push West as indeed were wagons and it struck me that they could complement each other outside a station. There is no real need for people to be in the image - there is enough there and the composition works. This formula offers a closed end theatre from which to tell stories.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe best urban example of this is perhaps La Salle Street in Chicago, which concludes with the Chicago Board of Trade. It is one of the most iconic views in any American city and, of course, Chicago is the showcase of American architecture. Sam Mendes made full use of this in “The Road to Perdition”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eForrest Gump Point in Monument Valley is the American West at its majestic best and offers the same narrative of a journey’s end, albeit amidst the towering monoliths of Arizona.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut perhaps my favourite setting for this box office effect is the old mining town of Telluride resting at 9,000ft in the mountains of southwestern Colorado. I would contend that looking east down Main Street on a clear day is one of the most visually thrilling sights in all of America. There is a timelessness to the street with the grandest and most imposing of backdrops.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf course, Telluride is now a glamorous Ski resort and my instincts were to shoot here in the winter; the mountain pops with the snow and if the weather cooperates, there can be the whitest of canvases to play with at street level.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe problem for film makers is that the main street of Telluride can only be shut off from the public on a Sunday morning and only then for a couple of hours. We arrived on set a few days before and the weather got warmer and warmer. The snow in Main Street became slush and then disappeared totally. Saturday was spent sunbathing and cursing our luck, but then at about 5pm, storm clouds started to gather and by 8 pm, there was a full-on blizzard. We were overjoyed, but also concerned that if the storm continued until the morning, the mountain would be hidden and the moment lost. Without the mountain, there is no picture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt 6.45 am, with the team in position, some breaks appeared in the cloud and then around 7.15 am, I had my moment. We could not have wished for more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis picture is up there for me. I do not want to take myself too seriously and if I can use creativity as an antidote to the dangers of working in a literal straight jacket, I most certainly will.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe trouble with being led by creative forces is that more often than not, we cannot find the narrative or the idea. It is the equivalent of writer’s block. I can go weeks without an authentic idea that holds promise and feasibility. Ideas don’t tend to come on cue, they often arrive in the middle of the night.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis concept excited me from the day it was conceived. The Schmid Ranch, high up in the mountains of Colorado, was Tarantino’s location for The Hateful Eight and when we visited the location in early 2021, I saw the potential of building a set around which to work. The ranch saddles a truly spectacular amphitheatre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2021, there is no more contemporary or talked about asset to own than Bitcoin and the majority who own it, hold on to it with great conviction. I sensed that there was room to play a little parody in a wild west setting - Red Dead Redemption was going to tackle cryptocurrency head-on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe final frontier was a tough place where the rule of law was light and valuable possessions would not be lost without an often deadly fight. The lead character in this narrative was clearly not going to give up his asset easily - his loss would be someone else’s gain. I wanted to create a palpable sense of trespass and Ty Mitchell was the perfect character to play the role of the unyielding owner. It is challenging to transcend or be authentic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe legacy of Edward Curtis and Ansel Adams throws a heavy shadow over any contemporary photographer trying to pay homage to the American West.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFilmmakers must feel the same when addressing John Ford’s ownership of the moving image. The grandeur and majesty of the final frontier may be without equal, but it has been so well documented that artists risk much by focusing on this heavily mythologized era. The excitement of just being there can impinge on creativity, a bit like a student of photography arriving in Paris for the first time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut this cinematic photograph allows for a fleeting moment of proud retrospection. The light and the compositional balance work and I can look at the print for some time - perhaps as much as any picture I have taken in the last couple of years. The image is as emotional as it is timely and relevant. It speaks to me and of course the cowboy is as good as it gets.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAmerica may have had the most challenging of years, but tomorrow a new chapter begins for a country that still leads the world in so many fields. Most of all, at its core, it remains a nation of entrepreneurs. Those that went west in the 1800s fought hard for everything they had and provided much of the foundation of the American Dream. Whether they were gold prospectors , picks and shovels suppliers or simply settlers, their collective fortitude shaped the America that we know and will soon love again. The cowboy capitalist was integral to the evolution of the American economy. Everything was possible and everything still remains\u003cbr\u003epossible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt would be remiss not to mention the Coen Brothers as an inspiration to me. There is no point going backwards. My new variable this time was Cara Delevingne and her established team of stylists and hair and make-up artists. To bring such a celebrated and relevant woman as Cara to Montana is fresh ground. Put her in front of the Eiffel Tower and it is a new look on the Eiffel Tower.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI gave her team a directive for this shot: bad ass; sexy; sovereign; 1920s but still very much Cara. They absolutely nailed it, as did she. The hat made a huge difference. Depth of field and shutter speeds are therefore compromised. Cara would always be sharp - that was easy - then we had to hope for some luck elsewhere. The difference between someone who can ride competently and a true working cowboy may ostensibly appear marginal, but in extreme conditions a chasm appears.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo work a horse in -20 degrees, in two feet of fresh snow, whilst holding a weapon in one hand, appearing totally at ease, is a bridge too far for 99% of riders. So, on this set in Norwood, Colorado we knew we had to work with the best of the best. Ty Mitchell on the left is as authentic a Texan cowboy as they come and it is no surprise to us that he will soon be on set for three months with Martin Scorsese. I don’t think Scorsese will be disappointed with any aspect of Ty’s character. It will not be Ty’s first rodeo, Anthony Bourdain featured him when parts Unknown visited West Texas and Marfa.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo his right, Michael Malone is a local rancher from Colorado and he immediately impressed us with his understated confidence and ability to play to a role. I fancy he could ride a horse sidesaddle whilst totally stoned and I sense such a challenge may have been put to the test once or twice. We welcomed him to the team with open arms.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn my mind, the key variable in this photograph is the light. On a sunny winter’s day, with snow on the ground, I believe the best light is actually in the first three or four minutes when the sun raises its head and touches the subject. 10 minutes after sunrise is too late as the sun is too harsh on the subject. In those initial minutes, the sun can be behind the camera and give the cameraman huge flexibility. A photograph for instance of a hostile railroad attack by a party of Indians could be labelled as\u2028stereotyping or indeed being blind to the provocation of what was effectively an invasion by American settlers, prospectors and capitalists. We entered this project to tell stories, not make overtly political points.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter several scouting trips, I found an ideal location 10,000 feet above sea level on the track near Silverton, Colorado. The key to their drama is their almost vertical rise from Snake River and the lake below. There is nothing pedestrian or pastural about their ascendancy to the sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJulie Andrews would have struggled to sing and nanny seven children on these slopes, in fact there are not many slopes. The hills are more alive to the dangers of an avalanche than they are to the sound of music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis image was, however, made by the staged foreground narrative paying homage to the tough life of trappers. The dry lake offers a stage in winter, albeit an extremely cold stage. The morning we brought the horses onto the lake we were working in temperatures of around -26 degrees before sunrise. I also know the lighting and the angles inside out. If I could afford it, I would dedicate a room to his work—partly because his work ethic and dedication are inspirational and partly because I share his obsession with the American West. In 1906, J. P. Morgan provided Curtis with $75,000 to produce a series on Native Americans. This work was to be in 20 volumes with 1,500 photographs. Morgan’s funds were to be disbursed over five years and were earmarked to support only fieldwork for the books, not for writing, editing, or production of the volumes. Curtis received no salary for the project.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is one photograph of his that I have long had an obsession with—Canyon de Chelly—taken in 1904. His depiction of Navajos crossing the desert on horseback, their graceful silhouettes at the base of Arizona’s Canyon de Chelly, is a coveted piece of early 20th-century art and a symbol of the American West. When I was working on the South Coast of Iceland in 2018, I recognized the opportunity to pay homage to this classic photograph. There is a vast isolated rock, which is unlike any other geologic feature I have seen anywhere in the world, stranded on the volcanic black beach 10 miles east of Vík. Unsurprisingly, it has featured in movies, such as the recent Star Wars franchise.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe goal was to give a sense of scale, as Curtis had done in Arizona more than 100 years earlier. Fortunately, I was working with some Icelandic ponies anyway, so I just had to work quickly in the time available. For many people across the world, a cowboy is the most American thing they can think of. For that we should be thankful. Much better this noun than a Big Mac or even an Apple Mac.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTexas is the home of the cowboy and it is also the home of the longhorn. It was the birthplace of the great cattle drives north to the Kansas railroads in the 1870s and the names of the State’s leading sports teams leave us in no doubt as to the pride in the region’s heritage.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe cowboy and the longhorn remain part of today’s Texas and in West Texas we have built up a strong network of contacts who are now happy to allow us to drop into their daily lives. Filmmaking in my mind is a team sport - we are always reliant on the help and excellence of others. We have invested time in the communities of western Texas and we are now slowly reaping the rewards.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis was not an easy frame to take, as the big steer is turning towards my default flat position on the ground. There is quite an adrenaline rush at that level of proximity and this is not something to try on your own. I had seasoned cowboys on the ground right beside me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI had no expectation of Ryon Marshall - my go to Texan cowboy - being in pin sharp focus. It was not necessary for the narrative to hold up. What mattered was that the steer was flying and that the face and eyes were pin sharp.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe composition is fortunate, as it does look as if Ryon is flying. We are drawn to filming locations exuding a palpable sense of timelessness thus offering optionality on the narrative. The more remote the location, the greater the possibility for us to remove the “now” and let our imagination jump into any era over the last six or seven generations. West Texas is my West World and that is why this bleak, mournful and unforgiving canvas has such a grip on me. It is part of America that time most certainly forgot. No wonder film makers have long been lured here.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCowboys and cattle are not a new story; the partnership is one of the most enduring symbols of post-Civil War America and that is why they visually complement this landscape so effortlessly.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe knew what we wanted to do here, but working against the light with this amount of dust is a low percentage game. Dust can be a cameraman’s friend as it defies gravity, but there is a tipping point when it becomes his foe. On this frame, the lead drover is just out of the dust storm allowing for detail and the full benefit of the back light. The rest of this particular series was of no use at all. That is what we mean by a low percentage game.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI am in awe of the cowboys with whom we work in West Texas. They are the real deal and nothing is too much trouble for them. They have manners, work ethic and a sense of duty. Texas is often mocked, but I think we can learn a great deal from cowboy culture.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt has been a privilege to photograph this series. the history of the world in the last 140 years and in America this holds very true, albeit the move west was fuelled by so many other mineral resources as well as oil.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Go West, young man, go West” is celebrated counsel from 1851 that was followed by millions and gave rise to final frontier towns, across swathes of Western America. The few communities that remain intact offer great potential as filming backdrops.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe key to this photograph was to remember that tight framing leads the eye - otherwise the image would fall flat. There was no room for dead space, but also there could be few errors in the positioning of the 15 people.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe shot this many times, but just one frame came off. In cities and town across America these establishments can still be visited, but precious few remain unchanged from the 1920s. In the old copper mining town of Butte, Western Montana, our team found a real gem through a concealed door and then down two sets of stairs. It was dark, cold and dusty, but it was authentic.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn its hey day of copper production, Butte was home to 100,000 people and the town sat on what was then called \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e“The Richest Hill In The World\"\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. Now just 30,000 folk remain and many of the buildings are totally abandoned. This particular “Speakeasy\" must have been very busy at the weekend 100 years ago. My imagination ran wild as to what may have gone on - if only those walls could have talked.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe space was about as good as it gets for a staged shot and given that the poker table was still there, I did not have to reach too far in my creative processing. The models - Daniela Braga and Kate Bock did a brilliant job playing their roles as they always do. But so also did the wolf and indeed the whole cast. As for the game itself, the wolf had to be holding aces and eights - Dead Man’s hand. That was a no brainer from the start.⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e⁣\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut I want to thank the whole community in Butte Montana for their support during the filming. It was a true collaboration and they made us all feel very much at home - not easy as Butte is one of the most quirky places I have ever been too. We must push boundaries and not be lame in our conceptual processing. We have a free run here in the winter, when only 60 people live here and the Mayor only recently gave me the symbolic key to the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe group shots that I have photographed around the window end of the long bar have been well received and are difficult to top, especially as the last one included Cindy Crawford.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy premise this time was to markedly up the number of people in the picture (the most we had used before was six). This puts pressure on both the construction and the casting, as one lame character can become a tension point and ruin the whole image. We have all experienced the difficulty of group pictures on Christmas Day or Thanksgiving.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar selfie works so well, not just because of the number of people in the image, but because every character is an additive. It is my favourite selfie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe assembled a strong cast - the models Kate Bock from Cleveland and Olivia Culpo from Charlotte, native American families from Northern Montana and then, of course, my favourite local mountain men. The hair and makeup\/styling team, led by Nikki Parisi out of LA, was outstanding. My direction was 150 years ago Wild West - appropriate as in the 1860s, over 15,000 lived in Virginia City and The Pioneer Bar would have been very busy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll 11 characters played their roles well that day, but perhaps the picture is stolen by a lovely 85-year-old lady called Mary from Butte, Montana. There were two possible solutions - to move the story further away from the building, which would risk disassociation, or to get close to the building with a wide-angle lens, not easy at all and could risk ending with a lousy series of far lit loose shots. The whole building would be in for sure, but to work with a 28mm lens and a wolf is not to play the percentages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe had no real choice but to go for the second option and roll the dice. We got lucky, but as someone once said “Luck is the residue of design”. Chicago is the home of the mobster and I was determined to capture the mood of the Al Capone and Prohibition era in a single frame. To my mind this demanded a location canvas that could substantiate the narrative. I homed in on the old Italian Neighbourhood in Chicago - where thousands of Italians used to live in the 1920s and 1930s. Around 24th street and Oakley, it was a tight knit community with roots in Tuscan towns such as Lucca.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn an intersection on 24th Street there is a well-known Italian restaurant - Bruna’s, that was around at the time of Al Capone. Bruna - an Italian lady - owned the joint for many years and allegedly had fatally knifed a couple of customers during her tenure. Her portrait still holds court in the dining area.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI visited on the premise of being hungry and I knew immediately there was potential. The current owner - Luciano from Siena - was willing to cooperate so long as some cash changed hands and he could be an extra in the image. Both requests seemed reasonable, besides historical precedent suggests that this was no place to argue with the patrons.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe casting couch was entertaining as it was difficult to distinguish between those who were acting and those who were the real deal. I could only vouch for two of them - Luciano, on the far left of the photograph and Josie Canseco, who played her role brilliantly as she always does. The brand is emblematic of the post 1945 roll out of the US highway network that offered the American population the freedom to travel for travel’s sake. As Robert Louis Stevenson said: “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy preconception was that if we were to use Harley-Davidsons for our “Road Trip” series in America, we needed a visual template that was “bad ass” from every perspective. We could not do this in a half-hearted way - there was a responsibility to kill it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll the bikers clearly had to be dudes and my preference was for the bikes themselves to be from the late 1930s through to the 1970s. I wanted choppers that aficionados would recognise and celebrate as I was determined that seasoned bikers could love the image as much as my followers. My hunch was that this might be the first and only time that these two demographics would met. There was a required level of authenticity and attention to detail, but nothing insurmountable. My production team - Brawler - is first class at looking after that and indeed sourced the famous 1936 Knucklehead Chopper and a 1946 Harley Davidson sidecar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe location was key. We had to find somewhere that complemented the bikes and romanticised the freedom of travel that the Harley-Davidson brand evokes. This instructed towards depth in the image, as the longer the road, the more emphatically it conveyed the sense of a journey. My intuition was also that this was a shot that needed to be in California, or at least in John Ford’s American West, as the topography and sense of place reinforces the brand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe creative prompts were movies like Easy Rider - the classic 1969 Dennis Hopper film starring Peter Fonda. America is the home of big scenery and we needed big scenery. Our internet trawling finally led us towards the Valley of Fire in Nevada - a remote park one hour’s drive north east of Las Vegas. It had depth and the moon like rock structures either side of the road continually drag the eye back to that road. If any vista could be described as “bad ass”, this was it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd so it was that the crew assembled in the modest “Breaking Bad” village of Overton, Nevada last Tuesday night - the bikers from California, my usual five wolves and of course the delightful Bryana Holly - who agreed to come and work with us on this assignment. I think she might have been used to slightly nicer accommodation, but it was a joy to work with her.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePhotography can often be about maths as much as it is about inspiration and my deliberations on site the previous day were all about the need to compress distance, but also offer decent depth of field. The lens choice - my old reliable 85mm was key - nothing else in the camera boxes worked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result is a blowout image and I think everyone involved should give themselves a pat on the back (and that is a big number of people). I look forward to Harley-Davidson’s reaction. It really is a monster of a photograph - far better than I had hoped for. He chose well - it has depth to it, both literally and metaphorically. The owner, Tye Mitchell, is also the real deal and often brings his horse to the bar. He is no Bianca Jagger and the Lost Horse Saloon is no Studio 54 - but this is Texas, not Manhattan and horses at bars don’t seem that incongruous. It almost goes with the territory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we photograph in bars in America, there tends to be a couple of commonly used tactics. Firstly, we tend to have an open bar and secondly, we also take control of that bar and ask anyone that is not right for the picture to sit behind the camera - albeit beer or whisky in hand. Everyone has to earn their right to be included.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis picture was taken around 11pm and the bar bill was already in excess of $2,000 and asking politely for everyone to listen and be compliant was only going to become more and more of a challenge. But this frame was a technical challenge because these two lights offered insufficient ambient light to give any detail outside - even before contemplating capturing a rearing horse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis meant using some LED lighting but we had to be careful not to kill the mood. The only card I had in my hand was that I could open up the lens and sacrifice depth of field, as all the detail I wanted would be within a narrow range from my camera. This gave me a chance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe girls did a great job, as did the cowboy and the horse. The Heath Ledger type cowboy in the bar was a good addition and then it was just down to luck with the horse on a longish shutter speed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA year ago, we did a similar outdoor shot in Big Timber, Montana. Coyote Ugly - as we called it - was well received. The Lost Horse Saloon was much more of a challenge on so many levels. The two certainly complement each other very well. Ty stands 6ft 5” tall and my general assessment is that not much fazes this guy. Meanwhile, the location is about as good as it gets and is rather wonderfully named Contraband Creek.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was standing in Mexico and 20 yards across the river was the US. Every time I walked knee deep across the river to change a lens or camera, I entered America and then on my return I re-entered Mexico. I think I actually entered America four times in a morning - all rather surreal with this talk of a wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI would like to thank the US Border Patrol in Texas for being so accommodating to our crew that day in Big Bend National Park. They - like me - must think “The Wall” is now a long way off because in 2020 the US has a real crisis on its hands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCoronavirus does not discriminate and does not recognise fame, borders, passports, race or religion. It is the ultimate leveller and rams home our mortality and our fragility. My preference is that these bars should be cluttered and deeply individualistic - there are no formulas in West Texas other than in the Crystal Meth motorhomes. On our scouting, I was immediately drawn to the sign on the front of the bar which located the destination in the most authoritative of ways.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMarfa may only have a modest population of 2,121, but almost everyone in Texas has heard of Marfa. It is the art outpost where “Burning Man” meets “No Country for Old Men”. Absolutely nothing about the place - which sits three hours from the nearest commercial airport - is in any way normal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy creative prompts in using the facade of the bar were led by two dominating objectives - firstly, to make sure that everything and everyone in the picture earned their space and secondly, I wanted the lighting to remain fairly dim so that the character of the joint was retained. To flood the narrative with light would give me greater depth of focus, but it could turn the bar into a sitcom studio. For a storyteller of life on the final frontier, props don’t get any better, but finding an authentic one and taking it to the pre-researched location in the wilderness of West Texas is a challenge and an expense.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnyhow, those issues overcome, the biggest problem with photographing a wagon on the move is that it does not suit my style of photography which would tend to be to shoot towards the oncoming wagon. This is simply because the horses’ heads will be at least 10 feet in front of the people driving the wagon. One or other would be in focus, but never both. To have the foreground subject out of focus is a tension point in any photograph and to have the human characters out of focus would seem fairly suboptimal. I wrestled with this the night before the shot and finally it dawned on me what to do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think it works and I have always wanted to have a picture with this title. The problem is that train tracks are mostly live and therefore out of bounds for working artists.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRailroads played an integral role in the push West in the 19th century and the pioneering spirit that characterised their construction has long fascinated me. We located a disused track not far from Marfa in West Texas stretching all the way to Presidio on the Mexican border. It ran through private land and in one cattle ranch a modest station had been built to the side of the track for the Oscar winning 2007 movie “There will be blood”. We negotiated terms with the ranch owner and he gave us access to film on a location well known to Daniel Day Lewis.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy preconception was to push modern sensibilities to one side and to play to the stern masculine traditions of Westerns. I wanted a grittiness to the narrative and a simple story of final frontier “badness” at work. The more you complicate Westerns, the less effective they can become. I like to tell stories using archetypal imagery and bring my own vision of Western lore. I think it is always better to exaggerate and amplify - just as Tarantino did so exceptionally well in “Django Unchained”. Why dumb it down?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was not a simple set up - getting an authentic wagon to this remote location required considerable resourcefulness. It was a hell of a drive from the team’s base in Marfa and securing permits was challenging, but I knew it would be worthwhile - the building and the mountains behind were just so good. They play effortlessly into the lore of the Wild West. Better still, the area is called Contraband Creek.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe nearest town of note is the bizarre art community of Terlingua. It is difficult to imagine the circumstances that led to people living around here unless they were in a witness protection programme or cooking crystal meth. It’s a sketchy place that would look at home in a Mad Max movie, not mainstream Texas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was clear that whatever I did with this gift of a canvas, the concept had to be badass and mean. Josie Canseco - the Victoria’s Secret girl - was perfect for the lead role as she can look badass and still retain her femininity and sexuality. There are no real secrets here, which is why film studios tend to focus on five or six specific locations. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere is a skew in my work towards shooting in Montana for two reasons: firstly, I have a far more established network of contacts and friends in Western Montana than in the states further south who can all help me find extras or indeed sometimes jump onto set themselves; secondly our Montana locations are exposed to the highest snowfalls and I like to work in the snow, it simply adds another layer of narrative, especially in monochrome images. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis photograph, shot near the Crazy Mountain at the old Marlboro Ranch in Montana, incorporates the greatest number of extras I have had on set during a shoot\u2028- about 120 all in. The logistics in the cold are challenging and then the execution of the idea requires precision as I want to see as many faces as possible and I want those faces to have a collective attitude. It seemed necessary to have women and children in the scene as if the whole town was watching the shoot out - this would not be a male dominated western vignette. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn order for the concept to have symmetry, I needed to incorporate the buildings on both sides of the street and this is where - at the margin - this location is the best I know because the street is narrow enough for a wide panoramic. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI always say to the cast ahead of workdays involving many people, that all it takes is one person to be looking the wrong way or behaving oddly for the photograph to be ruined. They are all being paid to focus and concentrate for no more than five minutes during the day, but those are a big five minutes. It is though the wolf that makes the photograph; those eyes have an unmistakable intent. Focus is the most important verb in my kind of photography as it serves to either deliberately include or deliberately exclude. In this way, the viewer is directed without the wider contextual story being lost.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMy cowboy - Ryan Marshall - does not need to do much more than stand there to add to the image; he may be way out of the focal plane, but we all know exactly the kind of character he is playing. The camera angle needed flat light not aggressive shadows and the weather forecast suggested that we would need to be finished no later than 8.15 am.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSo, it was cold conditions when the cast began assembling at 6.15am. Josie Canseco - a girl I often use in shoots - is tough and she showed it that morning. We know each other well and we can swear at each other without offence. It was minus 20 degrees on set and she wasn’t wearing much but that is how Josie rolls. I like familiarity; to call on new talent that I did not know for a shoot like this would have been commercial suicide.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe did indeed wrap by 8.10am, just before the sun started to dart around the set. This photograph is a keeper. I can look at it for a long time without losing interest and that is always my acid test. There was so much information to include in one still frame without losing Josie’s sovereignty and we all needed to work very quickly because I was racing against the rising sun. The whole team did a great job that day.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI do think Westerns have been too male dominated, almost to the point of parody, and in my anthology to the Wild West, there is much more of a balance. We have, however, been most selective with the women we have used. Ty became an extra for Scorsese last year and I can see exactly why. The girls - Erica Lawrence from New York and Josie Canseco from LA - complemented them well.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut it is the big black wolf who steals the show and lifts the photograph. The light was negligible so there was no margin for error, but so long as I managed one sharp picture I knew the subdued lighting would add to the mood. It played to the layered narratives that I often employ, with the towering mountain in the distance and the almost perfectly intact 1890 mine shaft in front. If I could configure a strong enough foreground, there was certainly a frame to be had. Mondrian taught us about the power of blending primary, secondary and tertiary and I felt it could be applied here. The idea was to style the shoot in sympathy with the peak of Creede’s mining production in 1893 when over 15,000 people lived in the area. With the help of the local theatre group and extras from all over the county, we managed to have 100 or so dressed miners on set at 6am one freezing March morning.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt’s not easy working with so many individuals on set and I steadily narrowed down the lead characters. I knew I had a superstar up the hill in Cara Delevingne and if she is to be joined in any picture by others, their faces have to be strong.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eCreede would have been a tough place in 1893, work was arduous and hours were long. This was no place for the frail or the precious and Cara and the boys captured the mood just right. Looking through stills of John Ford’s iconic film, Stagecoach, there was one image from the filming in 1939 that popped up on my screen time and time again - the stagecoach moving right to left with the unmistakable monoliths of Monument Valley in the background. There is no indication as to whether John Wayne was inside the stagecoach, but that mattered little, this was the perfect visual in what many have described as the perfect western. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe location of the old still from Stagecoach is on private land right on the Arizona\/Utah border not far from the Monument Valley visitor centre and my production team secured permission to film there. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt struck me, given the direction of travel was westerly, if we used a wagon as opposed to a stagecoach, we could use the first rays of light to dramatic effect as they diffract through the foreground content. The trick would then be to find a dip in the terrain which would allow for the monolith to pop out above the wagon and horses. This was the critical part of the execution as to block the drama behind would kill the context and the photograph. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe found our spot at dawn and then it was down to luck. I think in this part of the world, the light becomes too harsh to work with really only about 45 minutes after sunrise, so we had a narrow window. I would say that the window of opportunity on a clear morning in this part of the world is at best 30 minutes. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe idea of using the spokes of the wagon wheel as a means of light diffraction was not preconceived. It is more about the isolation and the sense of purpose. He persuaded a photographer - Josef Muench - to prepare a booklet of 10 x 8 contact prints of the most dramatic formations of Monument Valley such as the three sisters and Goulding took them to Hollywood and showed them to John Ford. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFord immediately agreed that Stagecoach should be filmed in Monument Valley and over the next 25 years he would shoot nine of his most influential films there. It is Navajo Reservation land. Here wind patterns in the desert are coupled with a vista from the book of Genesis. It is as grand and timeless as any landscape I know - the biblical equivalent of the modern-day river view in Chicago, with seven out of eight buildings removed. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBeing Navajo land, we could only film there with their approval and support. I want to thank the head of the local film commission - Bega Metzner - for her help and Navajo local Orville Sisco for securing the permit. Willie Nelson has sung here, as has Hank Williams, and of course, the owner himself, Arkey Blue. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThree requirements must be met for the saloon to work for me. I need a decent amount of ambient light from a door or a window; I need the décor to have a quin\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e- \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003etessential dive bar look to it and I need a well-positioned old pool table around which to build the narrative. We did our research in the area and Arkey Blues looked \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ethe most promising and the reality when we arrived was even better. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe cowboys had an important role to play in this image, but it wasn’t their toughest day at work. Many had just returned from being wranglers on the set of 1883, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ewhich allegedly involved 16-hour days. In contrast, all they had to do in this shoot was be themselves, have a beer and just be a little infatuated with our lead - Rox\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e- anna. In this photograph I wanted to fully em- brace the vibe of a honky-tonk bar in Texas, peopled by hard working, hard living cowboys whom David Allen Coe made pivotal to his song writing. These men love \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ea beer, a smoke and a honky-tonk girl, who brings out the masculinity that defines them. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eJohn Steinbeck - the American literary giant - wrote “I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion.” \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI get it, and cowboy culture is core to that religion. To try to immerse oneself in Texan culture and not spend time with true cowboys is akin to holidaying in Italy and eating at Burger King rather than the local trattoria. The cowboys in this image all play pool, all drink beer, all smoke, all love girls and all have manners. She is comfortable with playing bad ass, and she can do it with no real effort, which is why we so often cast her. There are a few hints in the photograph: the Lone Star pool table lighting; the ten working cowboys; the neon guitar on the left and even the air conditioning unit (less common in more northerly cowboy states). Throw in a tall, bad ass women in the foreground and we know we are in Texas. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt is the lighting that makes the photograph and that is down to the big barn doors at Arkey’s that are open during the day. It was this ambient light on the far-left corner that allowed me to work with minimal artificial light and that made all the difference. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere is also a little bit of a ‘Red Dead Redemption” vibe as I am shooting with a wide-angle lens close to the lead, as often seems to be the perspective in the successful video game series. This allows the depth of Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar saloon to be exploited rather than compressed. I avoid distance compression if at all possible, as a sense of space is often as critical as a sense of place. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBandera, in the Hill Country of Texas, is quintessential cowboy territory and a country music stronghold. Behind my shooting position there is a stage that has been graced by Willie Nelson and Hank Williams and throughout the bar there are historical treasures celebrating one of the most authentic bars we know in the whole of America. There are locations that demand to be worked in and this is a gem for sure.
