“I'm fascinated by the light — soft, warm, cool, bright — and how it affects the subject.” — Tom Lockhart
Tom Lockhart grew up in the small, rural town of Monte Vista, Colorado. Throughout his childhood, he spent time visiting his aunt's ranch and the farms of various uncles. These experiences filled him with an appreciation for nature and that way of life. After graduating from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas in 1976, he married his college sweetheart, moved back to Monte Vista, and took over the family's furniture business. For more than 10 years, he successfully managed this business, painting part-time. Then he took a leap of faith, becoming a full-time artist.
Determined to make a success of this new path, Lockhart enrolled in several workshops with professional, established artists. As his style and voice became clearer, he began to enter major art shows and exhibitions. Gaining the interest of collectors and publication, he started winning regional and national awards. He continues to hone his skill, entering shows, winning awards, and recognition.
Expressing his love of nature and wildlife — especially birds — in his paintings has brought him great joy. "I try to convey a sense of mood, a sense of serenity or peace. I want people, to have a sense of place, to feel like they belong, and that they can't wait to go there." A Signature Member of Oil Painters of America, Lockhart’s work can be found in private collections throughout the US, as well as Japan, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Australia, Holland, and more.
