There can be a crispness to the detail that grabs the eye and energises a frame. But waiting for the sun to go down does raise the risk of failure, as coupling neon signs and car headlights with panelled LED lighting, is not straightforward. Moreover, the working light is still not generous and the camera’s ability to capture the intended narrative is pushed to the limits; slower shutter speeds, wider apertures and higher ISOs.

On this 1950s set - built in Santa Clarita near Los Angeles - my excellent production team gave me the chance to create something very special. American icon Cindy Crawford would be my lead, so there was a little bit of pressure to be on my game, especially as Cindy had made the location famous from the iconic 1992 Pepsi commercial. The gas station and cafe haven’t changed much and neither, in fact, has Cindy.

My preconception was to use the panel lighting to showcase Cindy in an intense rain storm. The rain would pop much more than it would do in daylight. I could see the potential of the concept; the set, complete with 1950s LA cop cars, was authentic and all the angles worked. There was an intended nod to the wonderful movie - LA Confidential - but the problem was that her period evening glam look would be immediately vulnerable to the rain.

In my creative processing beforehand I had established in my mind that there could not be many retakes of this shoot. Her hair, so intelligently styled by the legendary Peter Savic, would be in trouble after just a few seconds; quickly followed by her evening dress. We had at best 10 seconds to get the shot.

What I knew was that Cindy is a trooper and indeed she smashes this picture. There are few people that would perform so professionally under such circumstances. She is as good as it gets and this picture is made by her, not me.

I would like to thank Cindy’s excellent A team of Peter Savic, Nicole Allowitz, Jennifer Jacobs and Sam Visser. However, the more I worked on this project in Alaska, the more I was disappointed by my “in flight” work – I struggled to do the wings justice. The problem was simply that in flight, the wings do look big, but there is a disconnect to anything that gives real scale – a “big sky” does not help as it excludes much of what could help define and give context.

I travelled to the fishing village of Homer – a great place to spot great Bald eagles, especially in the winter and spring and sure enough there were a great number of eagles on the beach. It was then a question of getting sufficiently close to work with as small a telephoto as possible. Instinctively, eagles will tend to take off away from an intruder, not towards him and to engineer the effect captured I had to use decoys to encourage the eagle’s first wing movement in my direction.
Finally, it came off – and I think this is indeed a fresh image of a bald eagle. I knew I had a cracking picture after I breathlessly picked myself up from the arid ground immediately after this brief encounter. The angle of view and the composition is close to perfect and that is presumably what engages the buyers of the work. There are generic giraffe pictures and then there is this. It transcends the banal and I am proud to have taken it.

Amboseli is the perfect canvas on which to tell stories because it is flat, elemental and free of distractions. The lack of noise emboldens this image – it is unequivocally all about a giraffe – albeit a large adult one, moving at a fair speed. The picture could have been taken anytime over the last 10,000 years.

There is another helpful component to this photograph in that the soft early morning light offers a calm and detailed portrayal of this majestic animal. If the giraffe was harshly sunlit – from either behind or from in front, I think the image would be too busy and have far less soul. As it is, this is all about the surreal subject matter, not the real weather.

I will always remember the first time I showed a big print of this to anyone. It was in Upper East Side, New York at a famous French restaurant. The owner – who has long been a reputable collector of photographs – was spellbound and I was humbled as he gathered his friends and family around the print. Leadville is America’s highest town and, like many old Colorado mining towns high in the mountains, it has largely escaped modernity and is all the better for it. This is a working town that doubles up inadvertently as a one stop film set. To walk down the main street is to enter the world of Taylor Sheridan.

The saloon proudly declares the date of its birth on the outside - 1879 - and my idea was to go forward 100 years to the 1970s when the famous Colorado ski resorts near
Leadville such as Vail and Aspen were gaining traction with the stars of Hollywood. By 10 am, he was presumably back to being a normal bison, albeit a large one, but by then we had long gone and were warming ourselves up in a frontier town saloon bar and convincing ourselves that we had not just gate crashed a Game of Thrones set. ~ David Yarrow

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1213/7518/files/David-Yarrow-sorrel-sky-gallery-Photographic-Print-AMERICAN-PRIMEVAL-Black-White.jpg?v=1738529640
trainspotting
TRAINSPOTTING

DURANGO, COLORADO - 2025

STANDARD
37” x 38” Unframed 52” x 53” Framed Edition of 12
LARGE
56” x 57” Unframed 71” x 72” Framed Edition of 12

In 1860, a group of prospectors ventured into the San Juan Mountains seeking riches. They discovered gold and silver deposits along the Animas River, naming the area “Baker’s Park”. Despite news of the discovery spreading, the Civil War, and the fact that the land belonged to the Ute Indians, delayed miners from returning until the early 1870s.

But in 1874, Silverton’s town site was established, quickly becoming the hub of numerous mining camps. Alongside miners, the town attracted the attention of a Denver railroad company with the ambition to build a track up this formidable canyon.
Eight years later, the inaugural train from Durango, operated by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, arrived in Silverton.

This extraordinary achievement was a testimony to the ability of 19th century engineers. By 1883, Silverton boasted a population of 2,000, featuring 400 buildings, including two banks, five laundries, 29 saloons, hotels, and the notorious red-light district, Blair Street.

Sitting proudly at 9300 ft, Silverton is hard enough to reach by car in 2025. Whenever I travel up to this gem of a town, I raise my glass to the fortitude and courage of final frontier capitalists and, of course, the railroad workers themselves. There can only be a few train journeys in the world that evoke a greater sense of 19th century human ambition.

The beauty and grandeur of the canyon up to Silverton makes the railroad one of the world’s great visual treats.

The world was introduced to it through Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid way back in 1969 and ever since I first filmed there five years ago, I have been fixated.

In this shot, we staged a robbery high up in the canyon.
