Original Acrylic by Thom Ross. 36" x 56"

Following his escape from the Lincoln County Courthouse in Lincoln, NM, noted outlaw, Billy the Kid, disappeared from view. Lincoln County sheriff, Pat Garrett, seemed to be in no hurry to go after the elusive Kid. Eventually, word came to him that the Kid was holed up out on the Llano Estacado in the tiny community of Ft. Sumner.
Garrett enlisted the aid of two fellow lawmen: Thomas "Kip" McKinney and the Texas lawman/cattle detective, John Poe, to ride with him from Roswell, NM, north along the Pecos River to Ft. Sumner.
To avoid detection, the three lawmen would only ride at night when there was less chance of encountering people who might get word back to the Kid that they had seen Garrett heading his way. So they would take refuge in the sandhills far off the well-traveled road which ran alongside the Pecos River. When night came, they would mount up and continue their ride north towards Ft. Sumner. (This is why this painting is nocturnal.....because that' exactly how it happened). In this painting, the trio of lawmen are shown riding across the llano at night, the moonlight illuminating their path.
