The river detail behind lends to the power of the image as it gives an emphatic sense of place and season. This proximity came from a combination of my experience of bison movement and fluency in the use of remote control cameras. This is not something people should try in Yellowstone without a good guide and extreme caution.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe second bonus is simply the position of the bison’s head. The big males do resemble beasts from some sort of fantasy production and the lower the camera is relative to the head, the more the sense of an encounter with a creature from another world is amplified. This looks like an animal from a different planet - something “Throners” would expect to see “North of the Wall”. No other mammal on the planet looks more like a monster than a male bison in the winter.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe third helpful variable is his front left leg suggests movement towards me and that is fortunate as bison can often be stagnant when they are feeding. This picture has the dynamism we often seek.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe took this picture so early in the day that no one else was in Yellowstone National Park. We left the park when the tourists were arriving. The difference between someone who can ride competently and a true working cowboy may ostensibly appear marginal, but in extreme conditions a chasm appears.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo work a horse in -20 degrees, in two feet of fresh snow, whilst holding a weapon in one hand, appearing totally at ease, is a bridge too far for 99% of riders. So, on this set in Norwood, Colorado we knew we had to work with the best of the best. Ty Mitchell on the left is as authentic a Texan cowboy as they come and it is no surprise to us that he will soon be on set for three months with Martin Scorsese. I don’t think Scorsese will be disappointed with any aspect of Ty’s character. It will not be Ty’s first rodeo, Anthony Bourdain featured him when parts Unknown visited West Texas and Marfa.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo his right, Michael Malone is a local rancher from Colorado and he immediately impressed us with his understated confidence and ability to play to a role. I fancy he could ride a horse sidesaddle whilst totally stoned and I sense such a challenge may have been put to the test once or twice. We welcomed him to the team with open arms.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn my mind, the key variable in this photograph is the light. On a sunny winter’s day, with snow on the ground, I believe the best light is actually in the first three or four minutes when the sun raises its head and touches the subject. 10 minutes after sunrise is too late as the sun is too harsh on the subject. In those initial minutes, the sun can be behind the camera and give the cameraman huge flexibility. For others, however, the Transcontinental Railroad undermined the sovereignty of Native nations and threatened to destroy Indigenous communities and their cultures as the railroad expanded into territories in\u003cimg\u003ehabited solely by Native Americans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs part of my photographic anthology on the wild west, it was always my intent to bring native Indians and a railroad together into an image, but I had no wish to objectify either party. A photograph for instance of a hostile railroad attack by a party of Indians could be labelled as\u2028stereotyping or indeed being blind to the provocation of what was effectively an invasion by American settlers, prospectors and capitalists. We entered this project to tell stories, not make overtly political points.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter several scouting trips, I found an ideal location 10,000 feet above sea level on the track near Silverton, Colorado. This in an arena where\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003emany an Icelandic saga has been played out in the minds of creatives.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dome like sand dunes nestling below Vestrahorn have been owned by the same Icelandic farming family for several generations. Our production team - the ex-\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ecellent True North - had secured us access both to the land and their Icelandic horses who play out their lives in this most majestic of settings.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe goal was to shoot with snow on the ground and snow on the mountains as I knew this could offer a further sense of mythology. I am always greedy with my\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003evisuals and I wanted a sense of the cold.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut the day before the planned shoot, the temperature rose above freezing and my canvas on the ground melted quickly. We went to bed hoping for some luck and\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ewhilst it started to snow at dawn, my concern was then that the mountain would not be visible. As we rushed out to the predetermined location, the clouds started to\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003elift and provided the farmer could work his magic with the horse we had identified as our star, there was a chance.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph has a sense of place and that was always my goal in Iceland. The ski run down the hill is often complicated by the amount of alcohol consumed before revellers are reunited with their skis. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAspen is Shangri-La to both seasoned visitors and residents and Cloud 9, with its dramatic location and reputation for glamour and excess, is a part of the jigsaw making Aspen the most famous Ski resort in the world. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMy plan was to film up at Cloud 9 and style it in 1970s clothing as a nod to a period when Aspen really established its reputation as a bohemian paradise for the chic and the celebrated. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI booked two great girls - Brooks Nader - a high energy, live-wire who has worked with me over the last couple of years and then the wonderful Brazilian - Alessandra Ambrosio - the queen of fashion shows and modeling for the last 15 years. She is a joy to work with and has a fun and unassuming disposition despite her fame. There are few models working today that are as loved and respected as Alessandra. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe only problem was that we needed to shoot early in the day before the slopes opened and the day was fixed. Meanwhile, Alessandra had been brilliantly styled in 1970s ski clothing and looked sensational although I knew she would be feeling the cold. This was not her natural habitat, but she is very smart and able to play to a prescribed role even though Cloud Nine in the winter is a long way from her home beaches in Brazil. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe simple portrait is of a beautiful girl. She happens to be at a famous place high in the Rockies in a snowstorm. Her clothing is a nod to Aspen’s coming of age in the 1970s. Big Sky is the home of the over achiever and sometimes it makes the Davos economic summit look second tier.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAs we continue our ski series in America and Europe, we thought it was time to shoot here and play to the glamour that its huge ski area and its clubs and hotels attract. It is America’s new Shangri La.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt is an oddity of America that so many of the nation’s great ski resorts are in frontier mining towns such as Aspen, Telluride in Colorado or in cowboy country like Big Sky in Montana.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI thought that cowboy hats would combine well with the vintage styling that day and both girls - Holly Graves and Jenna Grimes - did a fantastic job in extremely cold conditions up by the Montage Hotel in Spanish Peaks. They look like they have co-existed seamlessly for centuries in much the same way as the golf course at St Andrews sits in harmony with the town that it made famous. The reality is, of course, that this photograph celebrates \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ea far newer relationship than the marriage in Scotland, but both unions will continue in perpetuity, passed down from generation to generation. Aspen is a vortex of pleasure and misadventure few can escape from and this spectacular vista is part of its unique appeal. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhatever lies ahead for Aspen, no generation will probably have more fun than the free loving hipsters of the 1970s who made the town a Bohemian hot spot. The once silver mining town, nestling at 9000 feet, became an unlikely Rock and Roll town drawing established and aspiring creatives from every corner of the United States. It may have been a growing haven for the Hollywood elite, but it welcomed talent and bad behaviour more than it did wealth. I have a sense that in the 1970s Aspen was as loosely governed as it was back in 1880 when it was a frontier mining town, that would be quite an achievement. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe model - Kate Bock - reminds me a little of Heather Graham in Austin Powers in this throwback shot, taken late one winter afternoon from Hunter Creek Road. (Only service dogs are allowed up the mountain in the winter). The question was not as much which area to ski, but whether to hang with The Eagles, John Denver or Jimmy Buffett.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBy the early 70s The J Bar at the storied Jerome Hotel was firmly established as a drinking venue and I have heard stories of bartenders turning a blind eye to high profile figures brazenly doing lines of coke off the counter in broad daylight. It was in keeping with the vibe of the era that Hunter Thompson ran for sheriff and was taken seriously. The rich and famous ran amok in Aspen.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI desperately wanted to take a photograph in a prominent place in Aspen that looked as if it had been taken in the hipster days of the early 70s. In scouting the journey the day after an intense snowstorm, I found a spot that I thought could offer a balance; I would just need Cara to be strong and sure footed on the banks of a river in a huge amount of fresh snow.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThere is a confident swagger to her and my best narrative was that she could be celebrating a robbery before it had even occurred - hence the cigar in her mouth. Handwarmers are such a wonderful invention.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis morning, up on the Durango \u0026amp; Silverton narrow gauge railroad, was one such occasion. The storm had cleared and was replaced by a cloudless sky and frigid temperatures. At sunrise we were down to around -15°F or -26°C and these conditions offered so much potential for the filmmaker as everything froze - from human beards and human breath to horse breath.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI am always nervous of boring people and anything in a picture that defies gravity tends to work for me as it adds energy and dynamism. The props I had that morning gave every chance to fully embrace this modus operandi - especially if my camera was pointed directly either side of the rising sun.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy cowboy - who is a dead ringer for Rip from the Yellowstone Series - is a charming Texan called Cole Nallion rather than Cole Hauser who plays Rip Wheeler. Cole worked as a cowboy extra and handler in another Taylor Sheridan series - 1883 - and it is easy to see why he and Sam Elliott got along.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis one split second image caught my notice straight away as there is an anonymity to his face. We don’t need to see his eyes, because this is not a story about him per se, it is a story about the loosely governed wild west, where cowboys like him often made a living from doing shady things. He is playing to a genre before he is playing himself.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe photograph has a Red Dead Redemption feel to it and the bigger it is printed the more powerful the emotion it elicits. The state of Montana played an integral part in Gold Rush history.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI first visited the train in 2015 and immediately saw its potential for a staged shot. Half the window areas are open to the elements and in the winter the snow often overwhelms the decaying interior. In the following years, we took a few pictures but, in many ways, these were a dress rehearsal for November 2020. We knew our light and our angles.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTaking the female icon Cara Delevingne to a unique site like this, so far from anywhere vaguely on the map, was an opportunity not to be wasted. I had my successes and I had my failures, but the photographs often lost immediate relevance as the press would simply look forward to the next race rather than dwelling on the last one.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e35 years later my goal for this project was to employ a broader narrative and play on a sense of scale and contrast; the constant grandeur of our planet against the ephemeral skier. I wanted to tell a tale of man and mountain, where the former is dwarfed by the latter and in so doing, I could hopefully glorify both. The skier could have a degree of anonymity as he was just part of the story, not the whole story.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI know my ski courses and had my mind set on this spot on the famous Val Gardena downhill in the Dolomites. The first jump, a third of the way down the course, gave me the chance to have a skier flying through the thin alpine air with the region’s highest mountain offering the most grand of backdrops. I had great fortune with the heavy snowfall the night before the race, as it transformed the whole amphitheatre, including the imposing rock face, into a fresh winter wonderland.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJared Goldberg - a member of the US ski team and a resident of Salt Lake City, Utah - is the skier in this image. He finished in the top 10 that stunning day in Val Gardena. I am in awe of his bravery, as I am with all downhill racers. Its clientele was not just the Swiss, but the British upper classes who were drawn to the\u003cbr\u003estrong winter suns of St Moritz and all sorts of thrill chasing events on the ice. By the turn of the century, the town was Europe’s winter El Dorado and Badrutt’s was the central base camp.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNot much has changed in the last 120 years and the hotel’s magical allure has made it world famous. Every day, scores of tourists stop outside the grand entrance to take photographs and there is no doubt that it is a destination in itself.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI wanted to photograph the grand entrance in 1960s period styling as a nod to the time that Gunter Sachs and Brigitte Bardot were holding court and helping make St Moritz the most glamorous winter resort on earth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI hope others think this photograph has a sense of place and a sense of time. The Bernina Pass - opened in 1865 - is one of the great stretches of mountain road in Europe.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI managed to get hold of a DB5 from a collector in Zurich and with great care it was positioned by the roadside at dawn. My fellow Scot, Sean Connery, is, of course, sadly no longer with us, but I felt I could tell enough of a Bond story without him, I would just leave the viewer to interpret the scene.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eErica Lawrence from Brooklyn New York played basketball in her youth and it is easy to see why from this picture. She is a good friend and so happy to play this kind of role. I knew from the moment that I undertook this project, that a single photograph would fail if I didn’t convey, not just a sense of place, or the sport itself, but a sense of “Club”.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Cresta Club, officially known as the St Moritz Tobogganing Club, has been in existence since 1887\u003cbr\u003eand remains one of St Moritz’s most exclusive institutions - and there are quite a few. It has a very British stamp to it and there is a sense of being at an old boys reunion at Harrow, but it welcomes all nations and all characters. For what could be a rather stuffy golf club culture, it is defined by its lack of stuffiness. It is a Club where people have fun and refuse to grow up and surely that should always be applauded.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy dilemma was how to take a picture that was authentic, fun and told a story of its members. I needed the track and a rider, but I also needed the faces in the crowd. For safety reasons these subjects tend to be mutually exclusive.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe solution was for me to positioned just down the track from the start and roped in like a mountaineer so that I didn’t travel down the course on my backside with my cameras. I knew already how treacherous it is as I slipped in my early morning reconnaissance and lost a tooth. The Cresta Run is 3\/4s of a mile of downhill sheet ice; start falling down the tunnel and you have a long way to go until you stop.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Club was entertained by my planned position and graciously roped me in. I doubt a camera had ever had this angle before - well certainly not with a rider as glamorous as Frida Aasen on the skeleton. It is a Peter Pan playground that remembers that life is for living. The station is an isolated monolith, gate- crashing one of the great railway journeys in the world. When I first stumbled across this grey and rocky outpost, I felt a visceral surge of creativity. I knew there was a powerful and authentic shot here and I don’t often get that feeling. This is the highest railway station in Europe.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy leaning was to shoot in the winter, as snow would complement the harsh and undecorated grey buildings. The Bernina Pass is surely personified by its harsh winter, not its glorious summer. This is James Bond country.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe proximity of St Moritz in the Engadine Valley below prompted me to contrast the harshness and timelessness of the location with the glamour for which St Moritz has long been famous. The celebrated Norwegian model - Frida Aasen - was perfect for the role and the styling was on point; the railway platform was her 1970s stage. She looked sensational in cold conditions in one of the great mountain passes in Switzerland.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlone in such an extreme location, we could have been forgiven for playing to a sense of vulnerability, but that was never my direct. She owns St Moritz and she hasn’t even got there. Besides, she has a big old St Bernard to show her the way.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis project was a logistical challenge, but when I see the final print and Frida’s face, it was so worthwhile. I saw this as my opportunity as we have strong contacts in Oslo and I felt that we could do something a little different. It would be rather lame to photograph Mikaela on a ski slope.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eNorway has a strong heritage not just in skiing but in Polar exploration with Roald Amundsen being the first man to reach the North and South Poles. My leaning was to throw Mikaela into an explorer’s base camp and create a narrative hinting at both the extreme conditions and the fortitude of the protagonists. After all, her extraordinary career has often been played out in the toughest of winter conditions. Mikaela has many attributes, but her physical and mental strength define her, and I have absolutely no doubt that she could have led any polar expedition 110 years ago.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI asked her to give me a look of sovereignty and leadership in that hut and it came naturally. I thought we could create some visual tension if he was surrounded by archetypal explorers from the Amundsen days, all boasting ice coated beards and a weathered look: so giving a nod to their uncompromising lifestyle and the conditions they endure.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere was not much light to play with on set in Oslo, but just enough to play on the facial detail of each explorer. They look a formidable ensemble. It was a long way for her to come for a one-day shoot, but she approaches every job with sensibility and gusto.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTo juxtapose a Sports Illustrated Swimwear model next to some frosty and unrefined explorers from bygone days is a risk conceptually if there is no wider context. In these ideas, there is every chance the result can be a bit one dimensional and gratuitous. I am paranoid of the mundane which means we tend to give these ideas a great deal of thought. My sense was that 10th century seafaring warriors would have cut uncompromising figures, much in the same way that the defensive line of the Minnesota Vikings do not look like the most inviting of ensembles.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn storytelling, there seems little merit in downplaying the central characteristics of the protagonists. If anything, they should be exaggerated. We are told that Vikings were tough so far better to play to that lore rather than challenging it.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe weather that day in Gudvangen was bleak and angry and that was welcome to the overall mood of the shot. Its clientele was not just the Swiss, but the British upper classes who were drawn to the strong winter suns of St Moritz and all sorts of thrill chasing events on the ice. By the turn of the century, the town\u003cbr\u003ewas Europe’s winter El Dorado and Badrutt’s was the central base camp.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNot much has changed in the last 120 years and the hotel’s magical allure has made it world famous. Every day, scores of tourists stop outside the grand entrance to take photographs and there is no doubt that it is a destination in itself.\u003cbr\u003eI wanted to photograph the grand entrance in 1960s period styling as a nod to the time that Gunter Sachs and Brigitte Bardot were holding court and helping make St Moritz the most glamorous winter resort on earth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI hope others think this photograph has a sense of place and a sense of time. The best indication of the severity of the conditions was that within minutes of returning to our modest hotel a couple of miles away, the Icelandic traffic police closed the road in either direction. I can’t remember another time when the weather has deteriorated so quickly that we have gone from filming outdoors to a weather enforced lock in within an hour. That is Iceland for you. It is not only geologically angry beneath the surface, it can be brutal above ground as well.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe credit for this picture must really go to the nearby farmers and their horses. I knew that I had an exceptional canvas to play with: the sea stacks coated in fresh snow and the sea itself a chaotic cocktail of white. It was one hell of an opportunity but I needed a horse to cooperate before conditions became too extreme.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe fact that we got there in the end is testimony to the local horse handlers. Landscape photography is a very challenging genre of photography and not one I have ever really shown much distinction at. I want to tell my own stories and that requires bringing our own props and simply using the backdrop as a canvas. In other words, don’t point the camera at the water until it is a necessity.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI prefer a winter foreground as it simply adds narrative, especially if the horses can kick up snow in their gallop away from the thunderous noise behind them. The local famers brought four horses to the set and one in particular had attitude and an appetite to put on a show. If the handlers could get that horse to turn in mid gallop, the greater the chance that he could kick some snow.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe weather was brutal that day and there was only a 15-minute window of light between the storms. It was cold, wet and windy and the camera lens needed every bit of love to remain operable. I wanted to visually glorify the amphitheatre as much as the racing itself and this required fresh snow. After a thaw, any winter town can look unexceptional, whereas after a snowfall it can look like a Disney movie or a winter wonderland from the pages of a story book.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSt Moritz is a sunny place and the sun facing slopes of the town and the surrounding trees can get a little messy and green after just one day of sun. From the far side of the lake, all the iconic grand hotels such as Badrutt’s Palace and the Kulm Hotel stand out, in all their glory along with the church spire and the famous old mountain railway. There can surely be no more glamorous a backdrop for a horse racetrack in the world, so long as there is fresh snow.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBut my needs were even more demanding than fresh snow. There had to be not just recent snow, but no falling snow, and then, if possible, I did not want the sun to be out, as, by the time the races started at 11.30am, the winter sunshine would make everything too stark. I struggle to tell a story in harsh light, as the aggressive tonal range can detract from what the artist wants to say. But I also wanted depth, so that there were layers in the photograph from the horses up front to the cable car high in the mountains in the background. To do this needed light, but just flat winter light.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI woke that Sunday morning in town in February 2024 and saw my chance. It was still snowing, but the forecast was for it to stop by 11 am. The odds were always so low - one could wait many years to get these conditions on one of the three Sundays in February. But on 11 February 2024, it was all there for me and I took my chance. It’s fair to say that I have been thinking about my camera settings for many years on this shot.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe photograph would not have been possible without the collaboration of Dennis Schiergen, who has been at the helm of the White Turf - either as a jockey or now as its lead official - for many years. The contrast between the two places is astonishingly stark, given that they are only three miles apart. Whilst Vail was styled by architects and designers on Alpine Bavaria, Minturn was styled by grizzly prospectors looking only as far as the next day. Vail was built 80 years after Minturn and when the contractors finished a day’s shift, they would head west to the Minturn Saloon. It was the place to go and 60 years on, despite some remodeling and ownership changes, it remains exactly that. All those who know Vail, know the Minturn Saloon. Rather like the Woody Creek Tavern in Aspen, it has fostered a strong patronage over the years and when the doors open at 3 pm, the bar fills at a speed to suggest that this is a special and loved destination. As always it is the people that make the places and this bar attracts a rich variety of clientele. Part of the saloon’s appeal was that it was directly accessible by skis, by car, by foot and by horse and it therefore became something of a vortex at the end of the day. By the 1970s, the Minturn not only attracted cowboys, builders and miners, but the new bohemian hipster crowd from over the hill. I am always drawn to the visual contrasts afforded to a filmmaker when a wild frontier destination is fused with glamour. This was the premise for this story. I saw a chance to play with the cold winter light that day and the result works pleasingly well in colour. Alessandra Ambrosio is one of the leading models in the world and it was a pleasure to work with her. She certainly killed her look and showed why she is at the top of her game. But to borrow from Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, “If you build it, he will come” and sure enough they came. The Lodge at Vail became the epicentre of a town that enjoyed growing popularity because of its abundant skiing and ease of travel. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe facade of the hotel has not changed much for several decades and I thought I could use that as a backdrop, in much the same way we did at Badrutt’s Palace in St Moritz, Switzerland in 2023. That photograph - which lent on the glamour of the 1970s in the resort - was hugely popular. There was an element of James Bond to it coupled with intense femininity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe formula worked and so this became the prompt for my shot outside the Lodge. After all, Vail became a place to be seen fairly quickly and by the mid 70s it was in vogue. Bohemian glamour was as prevalent in Colorado as it was in the Swiss Alps, maybe even more so.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWho better, therefore, than Alessandra Ambrosio - the Brazilian supermodel - to play the lead in this narrative. Whilst there is no more important variable in our planning than rigorous attention to trusted weather forecasts, we sometimes have to acknowledge that luck plays a big role. This was a lucky day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI think that any portrait of a bull bison, in which this enormous and emblematic animal is perpendicular to the camera, must be more kinetic than a\u003cbr\u003ehead on portrait, simply because there is no sense of engagement. The bison is behaving as normal and not reacting to my presence because I was hidden behind a rock. He may have smelt me but he did not see me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt’s the small things that can sometimes elevate a picture. In this case, it’s his eye detail and then immediately below his face, the blades of grass caked in frozen snow. There is an emphatic sense of the cold, which is what I always strive for in my bison work. A similar portrait shot in summer would lose zest and a powerful narrative. Soviet culture, architecture and politics permeate the town, from the block-style housing to the bust of Lenin—the world’s northernmost statue of that communist revolutionary— which gazes down, fatherly and proud, on Pyramiden’s main square.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI have always wanted to get a big photograph of this creepy place, but I needed winter, winds and a palpable sense of the frozen north. This is not a place to photograph in the summer. Most of all I needed a polar bear. In early spring 2019, I had my moment.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere is enough detail in the background layer of this photograph to make out factory buildings, chimneys, carts and tracks and indeed a disused mineshaft. The light was kind and the wind ferocious. With the wind chill, this was as cold as I can remember working with a camera. I had to wear one glove and manual focus was not easy. This was not a time to use autofocus on that bear - not with the wind and medley of whites.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe photograph is a indeed a big photograph - bigger than I could have possibly wished for. Location scouting is an integral part of our working year, as storytelling rarely blossoms in a contextual vacuum.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe idea of using tall snow berms to frame the Ferrari and then offering a period James Bond type narrative, was not a new addition to our conceptual idea factory. To shoot in California rather than Colorado was a big call, but we felt it gave us the best chance and the best access. I gave him a rather clumsy articulation of the narrative I was looking for in this outdoor shot in freezing temperatures near Ingomar, a tiny hamlet with a population of just 15. We were about as far removed from controlled studio conditions in Hollywood as you could conceive. I think I simply said that Cindy would be carrying a shotgun and with it a look of intent. Twenty minutes later Cindy bounced out of the car with an extravagant Raquel Welch 1960s big hair look that was spot on for what I had in mind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter that my job was easy - to shoot as quickly as possible so that our lead would not get too cold. The trick is simply to have no doubt in one’s mind of the composition and believe firmly in the narrative embodied in the preconception. It’s a bit like a golf shot (not that I would know), you make up your mind and go for it. My storyline was that Cindy and her troop were the deliverers of frontier justice - whatever way that may come. Luck evens itself out, but nature can seem cruel in its distribution of content, and in this barren archipelago, I don’t recall many favors until June 2017.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no doubt in my mind that this photograph of a big male polar bear lends weight to the contention that wildlife photography does not have to be reportage—it can be art. The photograph is elevated rather than weakened by the negative space and the bear’s anonymity. Since 2011, I have spent more than 30 days shooting in Svalbard, and this is my favorite image of a polar bear in this part of the Arctic. Indeed, the more I look at it, the prouder I am. As my fellow Scottish photographer and friend the great Harry Benson once said, “Great images can never be repeated.” Others will decide if this is a great image, but it certainly won’t be repeated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe distinctive pads on the sole of his foot immediately grab the eye. The central pad, which resembles the Nike “swoosh,” is the epicenter of a photograph that owes its differentiating content entirely to this right foot. The image is made complete by its own lack of completeness; the storytelling is started by the camera and finished by the viewer. We are asked to finish the story, not just read it, and the spartan economy of the narrative helps along the way. Less is more in the Arctic. Its beauty is in its simplicity and the enormity of the white detail. In so doing he coined the term “Manifest Destiny”.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere was a sense of unbridled purpose. Nothing would get in their way: forests would be cut; mountains carved and railroads built. 60 million bison were culled and replaced by cattle. Native Americans faced an existential crisis.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSome tribes, of course, fought, whilst others negotiated. There was heavy loss of life on both sides and there is irony now that this period of nation building is deeply uncomfortable for many current day Americans. What created the wealthiest country in the world is not something to celebrate.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRailroads were an integral part of the Manifest Destiny and undermined the sovereignty of Native nations. Their construction threatened to destroy indigenous communities and their cultures as the railroad expanded into territories inhabited by Native Americans.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut for all that, encounters between steam trains and Native Americans were not necessarily as Hollywood has depicted. There was not much conflict and indigenous people mostly watched the railroad construction with a degree of fascination. Indeed, some found themselves drawn into a closer relationship with settlers because of the commercial opportunities that came with railroad construction. There was collaboration and often Native Americans offered protection from bandits.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e19th century artists often depicted Native Americans as passive contextual narrative in railroad images; they are present but only to frame the story, not make the story. They simply establish the scene. This was my intent one cold February morning at Horseshoe Bend on the famous Durango \u0026amp; Silverton Railroad high in the San Juan Mountains. The Native American is not on the bend to attack, he is there simply to proudly show his presence. It is for the viewer to imagine how the next five minutes unfolded.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA great deal of logistical teamwork enabled this opportunity that cold sunny morning and the result is a strong photograph. But we continually check weather patterns and within 36 hours of a shoot, we tend to home in on a certain plan.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere are, I guess, four or five weather possibilities in the winter: melting snow and sunny, which is horrid; cold and sunny, which is better but restricts filming time; a snowstorm, which is exciting, but can impair detail or, ideally, the end of a big snow fall.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the Rockies, I guess there are about a dozen days a year when a big storm passes through and clears, leaving behind a winter wonderland and kind gentle light. This is the film maker’s big opportunity, provided the props are in place and access is still possible. It is always challenging, but these are the days we wait for. They don’t come that often.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe know the Durango to Silverton steam train well and have built up a strong friendship with the owner Al Harper and his wonderful team of engineers in Durango. I sensed there was an opportunity at this jaw dropping location made famous by its appearance some 50 years ago in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. We were in town and waiting as the storm system pushed through. It had lasted 36 hours and left 18 inches of new snow in the San Juan Forest that the old steam train cuts through.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe had to operate fast, as the light was picking up all the time and both teams worked quickly to get everyone in position early in the day. The Native American and the horse had the toughest job - that was no easy brief that day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen I look at this photograph, I feel some sense of pride, it is a hell of a shot. But not pride in myself, pride in all the people that made it happen. Winter rewards some and punishes others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut there is perhaps unity in the idea that this time of year can showcase the world at its visual best. For filmmakers, snow offers an extra character for free and that is something we have always embraced. It is a time to be in the field and not huddled by the fireplace watching movies. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis image of a large bull moose in the sage flats in Teton National Park has an emphatic sense of winter and that was my goal. It had snowed about six inches the night before and the photograph, taken around 07.30am, is elevated by the fresh snow cover and the sign of an early winter storm lifting. There is no better time to photograph than at the end of a snowfall; the flat light enhances the ethereal splendour of what the storm has left behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have learnt a great deal about moose behaviour and we know each situation is different. They can be extremely dangerous animals and should not be approached.
