“Painting tunes the senses and the soul.” - Lyn Boyer

Most likely we’ve all run across a terrific landscape with a not so terrific animal plopped into it spoiling the effect or maybe a quite lovely figure that looks like it’s been cut out and pasted onto a landscape – again spoiling the effect! Or, a street scene where the people in the distance look a bit either like Godzilla or they were put in the dryer on high! One of the most important things that contributes to the success of a painting is ‘Unity’ or what I call ‘ring of truth’. In the workshop ‘It’s Alive’ we’ll learn how to identify and avoid potential problems and also how to incorporate figures and animals into our paintings convincingly.

In this workshop we’ll study:

  • The ‘when and why’ of incorporating figures and animals in your paintings
  • How to add people and animals to plein air scenes even though it’s pretty likely they’re going to leave before you’ve finished!
  • How to capture the gesture of living things when painting from direct observation!
  • How to decide whether they will be the ‘star’ or be a supporting actor in your painting.
  • How to calculate the correct sizes for figures as they recede so your painting stays cohesive.
  • How to paint crowds and figures in street scenes.
  • How to understand light sources so your scene has unity and is convincing.
  •
