Scratchboard 101 will explore how values are achieved using a razor blade. Participants are asked to bring an exacto knife and a box of #11 blades. I will supply boards as well as any other materials needed. Students should also bring a number of reference photos, of anything they wish to draw from. Preferably a photo of a drawing they have done or a photo they have taken. This should be printed out to fit a 5x7 or 5x5 board. Anyone interested in a "head start" can purchase the book "Starting from Scratch” by Dianna Lee.

Scratchboard is a two dimensional subtractive art form. The support typically consists of a white kaolin clay coated hardboard, covered with black India ink. Sharp tools are used to remove or "scratch" through the black ink revealing the white clay underneath. The majority of the values within the artwork are achieved by varying the amount of surface layer that has been removed. Scratchboard has roots going back to the 1800's when black and white illustrations were created for newspapers and books. Creation of archival, museum grade materials has allowed it to continually evolve to the present day where it is now prominent in design work and fine art.
