On location on the abandoned film set of “There Will Be Blood”, we tried different combinations with a few prize-winning cows. But the reality was very clear - they are not camera friendly. In fact, they are considerably less compliant than the elephants of Amboseli, Kenya.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTo achieve this composition was a real test of the team’s patience and all my thanks go to Ryan Thompson and his fellow cowboys, who worked with great skill to engineer this frame. I was doubly appreciative, as lying on the old rail sleepers is not the most comfortable way to spend a morning. It was critical that the bull was facing me and there were no tension points with his fantastic horns.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eRail roads were so integral to the great push West as indeed were wagons and it struck me that they could complement each other outside a station. There is no real need for people to be in the image - there is enough there and the composition works. La Salle in Chicago, looking towards the Chicago Board of Trade building, is an iconic American urban view. Sam Mendes used it in the mobster classic - The Road to Perdition - and it has been glorified in many Batman iterations.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eChicago is urban beauty at its best and the presence of such a big building at the end of a street offers opportunities that Manhattan simply does not give. The eye is grabbed and then led deep into the vortex of Gotham.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI wanted a story that was cinematic and visceral and my founding principal was that we had to shoot at night. We could then wet the road to enhance reflections and deliver mood and use smoke machines to give the scene a gangster throwback feel. I spent a few hours in daylight on several intersections of La Salle pondering my lens selection and the right position. This aspect of the job was under my control and I had to get it right.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere was a riddle in that the Chicago Police Department was wonderful, but understandably would only close down the street after midnight, by which time the Board of Trade has switched off the flood lights on its iconic building. This was a problem and we had to move one of these variables in our favour. With some charm and a few dollars, the Board of Trade agreed to help us and the lights went back on until 4am.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI deliberately played with verticals in the composition because I felt that the retro Northern Trust sign was a useful vertical twin to the Board of Trade. There was a consistent play on height - so why not supplement this with a tall gangster and then most implausibly a tall wolf?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGreat photographs can be looked at for a long time. We located a disused track not far from Marfa in West Texas stretching all the way to Presidio on the Mexican border. It ran through private land and in one cattle ranch a modest station had been built to the side of the track for the Oscar winning 2007 movie “There will be blood”. We negotiated terms with the ranch owner and he gave us access to film on a location well known to Daniel Day Lewis.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy preconception was to push modern sensibilities to one side and to play to the stern masculine traditions of Westerns. I wanted a grittiness to the narrative and a simple story of final frontier “badness” at work. The more you complicate Westerns, the less effective they can become. I like to tell stories using archetypal imagery and bring my own vision of Western lore. I think it is always better to exaggerate and amplify - just as Tarantino did so exceptionally well in “Django Unchained”. Why dumb it down?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was not a simple set up - getting an authentic wagon to this remote location required considerable resourcefulness. The idea of the back of Jordan’s head being at the front of the frame had no appeal, meanwhile excluding him from the picture altogether would weaken the narrative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut the crowd was simple to preconceive; an energy charged orgy of 1994 brokers celebrating the defiance of their leader. I wanted explicit references to the\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eexcesses of the era and the film and this demanded a testosterone jammed dealing floor hosting flying dollars, ticker tape, rubber dolls, call girls and marching bands. I always think that it is counter intuitive to downplay parody. We even managed to sneak in a Steve Madden shoe box.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe trick with Jordan was to have him on a big TV screen facing the same way as everyone else, this way the full story could be told without valuable inches being occupied by the back of Belfort’s head. The positive was that he felt one of his favourite lions under his care - BobCat - would enjoy the adventure of a new attraction in his acreage. Their daily routine would not have been compromised by drunken fights, troublesome prostitutes, crippling snowstorms or even the occasional shoot out. Far from being exposed, they would have dealt with these minor adversities with a wry but steely smile. They bossed the saloon and its patronage seven days a week.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eCara Delevingne was made to play the character of a landlady - she is sassy and hardened, as well, of course, as being one of the most celebrated models of her generation. When I took her out in this snowstorm in Leadville - America’s highest town - at minus 15 degrees, I might as well have been taking her for breakfast at Tiffany’s. That is just one of the qualities that makes her a very special person. On this occasion, there was a month of planning - all looking towards a specific day in mid-January.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI had a demanding wish list for that weather: fresh snow in the mountains and in the frontier town, but not snowfall on the day of the shoot; decent flat light, rather than a cloudless day with all the starkness and nasty shadows that would give.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAs it turned out, the weather was ideal and that allowed for detail and the depth of field that is integral to the idea. The days either side were sunny and bright and that would have cut available film hours by 80%.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI knew my composition ahead of shooting, but the extras all had to be on their game for the scene to be without tension points. The best indication of the severity of the conditions was that within minutes of returning to our modest hotel a couple of miles away, the Icelandic traffic police closed the road in either direction. I can’t remember another time when the weather has deteriorated so quickly that we have gone from filming outdoors to a weather enforced lock in within an hour. That is Iceland for you. I knew that I had an exceptional canvas to play with: the sea stacks coated in fresh snow and the sea itself a chaotic cocktail of white. The local famers brought four horses to the set and one in particular had attitude and an appetite to put on a show. If the handlers could get that horse to turn in mid gallop, the greater the chance that he could kick some snow.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe weather was brutal that day and there was only a 15-minute window of light between the storms. It was cold, wet and windy and the camera lens needed every bit of love to remain operable. I wanted to visually glorify the amphitheatre as much as the racing itself and this required fresh snow. After a thaw, any winter town can look unexceptional, whereas after a snowfall it can look like a Disney movie or a winter wonderland from the pages of a story book.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSt Moritz is a sunny place and the sun facing slopes of the town and the surrounding trees can get a little messy and green after just one day of sun. From the far side of the lake, all the iconic grand hotels such as Badrutt’s Palace and the Kulm Hotel stand out, in all their glory along with the church spire and the famous old mountain railway. There can surely be no more glamorous a backdrop for a horse racetrack in the world, so long as there is fresh snow.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBut my needs were even more demanding than fresh snow. There had to be not just recent snow, but no falling snow, and then, if possible, I did not want the sun to be out, as, by the time the races started at 11.30am, the winter sunshine would make everything too stark. I struggle to tell a story in harsh light, as the aggressive tonal range can detract from what the artist wants to say. But I also wanted depth, so that there were layers in the photograph from the horses up front to the cable car high in the mountains in the background. To do this needed light, but just flat winter light.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI woke that Sunday morning in town in February 2024 and saw my chance. It was still snowing, but the forecast was for it to stop by 11 am. The odds were always so low - one could wait many years to get these conditions on one of the three Sundays in February. But on 11 February 2024, it was all there for me and I took my chance. It’s fair to say that I have been thinking about my camera settings for many years on this shot.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe photograph would not have been possible without the collaboration of Dennis Schiergen, who has been at the helm of the White Turf - either as a jockey or now as its lead official - for many years. This is one hell of a location and well worth the trip.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is only 18 miles, as the crow flies, from Aspen, but by road in winter it is a 202-mile journey. Such is the nature of the topography in Colorado. I think it is rather appropriate that there is such a distance in winter between the most famous ski resort in the world and the small community that is now dubbed “The last great Colorado ski town” because they couldn’t be more different. At the last census, only 1700 people claimed Crested Butte as home, but it is a known destination.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhat both places have in common, however, is a mining past and with that goes dive bars that have stood the test of time. In Crested Butte, the infamous watering hole is Kochevar’s, established by Jacob Kochevar back in 1886. He seemed an interesting man with a keen eye for what his customers were looking for - women.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn its early life it was transformed from a brothel to a bowling alley, to a bar. Not many bars can lay claim to that level of adaptability at such an early stage in their history.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut perhaps the bar is most famous for housing Butch Cassidy and the Wall Gang. Butch left his gun, which is now displayed proudly inside the saloon. No better place, therefore, to bring my bunch of morally impaired misfits.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe did, however, acknowledge that the joint had history with femininity and what fun it was to bring one of the world’s most celebrated supermodels - Alessandra Ambrosio - to the bar at the end of the road. Of course, these days, it is all for show and friendships are soon made, but there is an overriding sense that bad things did once happen here. It would be very disappointing to enter a frontier bar to learn that nothing immoral had ever occurred under its roof.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe lore of the American West would suggest that in the olden days, bars were loosely governed and behaviour was unpredictable. Life was cheap, and entering a bar\u003cbr\u003eat the wrong time could be a fatal mistake. It was Russian Roulette and the default position was to be armed and wary.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis tableaux is a giddy ode to these saloon bars dotted around frontier towns in the Wild West. It was taken in Kochevar’s Saloon, in the old mining town of Crested Butte, Colorado. The walls of Kochevar’s - which include a century old roulette table - are\u003cbr\u003ea rich museum to the American west. If those walls could talk, they would no doubt tell many a story of character rich women, gambling feuds, drunken outlaws and cowboy capitalists. The snow cover here tends to be less substantial than up towards Big Sky and we needed that snow cover. Whilst there is no more important variable in our planning than rigorous attention to trusted weather forecasts, we sometimes have to acknowledge that luck plays a big role. This was a lucky day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI think that any portrait of a bull bison, in which this enormous and emblematic animal is perpendicular to the camera, must be more kinetic than a\u003cbr\u003ehead on portrait, simply because there is no sense of engagement. The bison is behaving as normal and not reacting to my presence because I was hidden behind a rock. He may have smelt me but he did not see me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt’s the small things that can sometimes elevate a picture. In this case, it’s his eye detail and then immediately below his face, the blades of grass caked in frozen snow. There is an emphatic sense of the cold, which is what I always strive for in my bison work. A similar portrait shot in summer would lose zest and a powerful narrative. Pioneertown is a former Hollywood movie set of an 1880s frontier town and is still a real working town today, with businesses lining Mane Street where it’s “Hoof and Foot Traffic Only”.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFounded in 1982, Pappy + Harriet’s has hosted many celebrated music acts, some taking time out from nearby music festivals such as Coachella and Stagecoach but most are coming to play what has become one of the most lauded independent venues in the world. Some are simply so seduced by the magic they end up performing impromptu on stage. McCartney, Robert Plant and Patti Smith have played here, along with rock bands such as Interpol, the Arctic Monkeys and the Dead Kennedys.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe crowd is a magical cocktail of cowboys, bikers, old-timers, creative artists and musicians and it is this assembly that has elevated a dusty old roadhouse into an establishment whose status is secure. There is nowhere quite like it and it is a known destination. On the day I was shooting in Pioneertown, I happened to be speaking to an old friend who is the President of Live Nation’s European division and when he found out where I was, his voice was excited as if I was on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMuch of the credit for the continued allure of this famed honky tonk must, of course, go to the founders - Harriet and her husband Claude “Pappy” Allen. He passed in 1994, but his keen artistic eye still stamps its authority on the interior details of the bar. That was important to convey in this image. After Pappy’s passing, the ownership changed hands a few times and now operates under the loving care of the married owners JB Moresco and Lisa Elin - I want to thank them for their kindness on the day of this crazy shoot. The legendary location is in good hands for another generation of lovers of life. Even now, it is not the most welcoming of places. It’s a long way from home, English tongues are rare and, in the winter, it can offer indecently low temperatures.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI recognised that I would need to allocate a good amount of time in the north to wait for the snowfall. Siberian winters are extremely cold, but it does not snow that often. There are many hours spent killing time in a hotel room but the accommodation is much more comfortable than it used to be. It is such a long way from home and there is little merit planning for a three-day visit anyway. It’s an odd job sometimes: I probably invested about 120 hours, including travel time, for two six second windows of opportunity.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOn this trip I worked closely with the Chinese authorities and, in retrospect, this brief encounter was only possible because of the help of two or three extremely influential Chinese people. I am reminded that access is a key word in photography and this is normally achieved by investing in people. My charm offensive with my Chinese contacts was several months long. My team knows who they are and their stature within China, but no one else needs to know.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe question that I will be asked about this picture will simply be “how on earth did you get it?”. I had been preoccupied by that fear for some time and I knew I had to be bold when I returned at the end of June 2022.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe Lakes areas of South Sudan is just about on a map, but way off the grid for most. It is the most basic of existences and the only material source of employment is the cattle camps. In 2014, I filmed near the town of Yirol in a camp on a Nile tributary, but this time I wanted to travel further into the interior and find an even bigger camp on the way to Rumbek. My premise was to play on scale and my leaning was always to go bigger not smaller. The Dinka tribe are the world’s tallest people, their cattle camps are the biggest of their kind and the cattle horns are Jurassic. This is a place to play on the word “big”.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhilst I was nervous of treading old ground, familiarity is a friend not a foe, that’s why we often work with the same talent in our storytelling. To shoot in California rather than Colorado was a big call, but we felt it gave us the best chance and the best access. Mankind elicited an emotional reaction despite how foreign the subject matter was.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe editions of the picture sold out quickly and the hammer price at Sotheby’s of $78,000 was then a record for my work. Since 2014, awareness of my art has grown materially, and I am sure this powerful image has played a role. It was taken at a dangerous time in South Sudan’s short history and recently, during 2019 and 2020, the violence got worse. It simply was not safe for foreigners as many areas were loosely governed and guns were round every corner. It was sketchy at best and downright toxic at worst.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut since 2021, some calm has returned and tribal skirmishes in the cattle camps are now less common. I thought it was time to return. After all, I’d had eight years to think about what I could do differently. Cameras have certainly improved, and I have a further eight years of experience under my belt. I also had maintained contacts in South Sudan, in particular with those in charge of the large cattle camps to the south of Rumbek. This is no place to go without inside help, security protection and best in class field logistics.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere must be a plan and there must be attention to detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut I knew it would be a mistake to go back and try to copy what I did eight years ago; it would hint at a lack of creative progression and courage. I needed to do better and offer a new story, to go backwards would be damaging at many levels. I had been preoccupied by that fear for some time and I knew that I had to be bold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Lakes areas of South Sudan are just about on a map, but way off the grid for most. It is the most basic of existences and the only material source of employment is the cattle camps. In 2014, I filmed near the town of Yirol in a camp on a Nile tributary, but this time I wanted to travel further into the interior and find an even bigger camp on the way to Rumbek. My premise was to play on scale and my leaning was always to go bigger not smaller. I am always greedy in the field. The Dinka tribe are the world’s tallest people, their cattle camps are the biggest of their kind and the cattle horns are Jurassic. This is a place to play on the word “big”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy picture, Mankind, had novelty factor because it delivered such an emphatic sense of scale and place. Whilst I was nervous of treading old ground, familiarity is a friend not a foe, that’s why we often use the same talent in our storytelling. I needed to go one step further than I had in 2014, without losing any small individual stories within the image. My sense was that there needed to be even more of a visual overload in the frame and I found it difficult in my preconceptions to escape from the word “panoramic”. The local chiefs and the head of police knew where to take me and my security detail knew how to keep me safe. The simple question is where on earth does a first-time visitor start on the logistics? If the protagonists in Game of Thrones had a favoured place to eat, it would be located here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI had not been to La Fontelina before 2024 because I had never been to Capri, but on my first visual exposure to the venue, I recognised that it was aesthetically without equal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDoing a photo shoot here requires many skills in addition to those employed when operating a camera. Most crucially, I needed to win the support of the owners Gaetano and Mario Gargiulo. Their generational success story meant that they needed neither a cash backhander nor some lame pictures for their Instagram account. Every day throughout the European summer they run and own one of the hottest tickets and they rightly focus on the constancy of excellence in their service rather than catering to film makers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI met Gaetona first as a customer and then it became my sole purpose in life to win him over and let me shoot a DY typical tableaux at his most beautiful club. Capri is to Neapolitans what the Hamptons is to New Yorkers and I hoped I had one trick - my image of Diego Maradona from Mexico 1986 - up my sleeve. Maradona is adored in Naples for bringing the local club the league title in 1987 and I figured that a gift or two of my well-known image could help my cause. I was right - and yet again I owe Diego.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd so it was, early one morning this summer, I assembled a cast in La Fontelina. I knew the deck chair formations and the movement of the sun long before that day, as this was not a shoot to make mistakes on. I had sensed some empty space in front of the southerly stack and worked with local fisherman to sort that out, but I was also conscious of the need to fully showcase the famous parasols without blocking any of the leads. The scene was choreographed for those with familiarity and I was conscious of the need to elicit rich memories.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn my mind a photographic tableaux is all about the space between the people and the props and La Fontelina certainly gives you every chance. I like this photograph a great deal, but I care more that Gaetona and Mario want to hang it on their rustic wall at La Fontelina in time for next season. Sometimes I don’t even press the shutter and then the times that I do shoot, there is normally something that kills the image. But that is part of the deal: we are gambling. It’s a bit like a Hail Mary pass in American Football, so many fortunate things must align for there to be a good outcome.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe biggest issue, assuming the lion jumps over the water (which is not a given), is precise focus. I used to use remote controls in this set up, but the camera is only so smart and I prefer to be operating the camera. So now I work from a strategically positioned heavy cage with a wide-angle lens and hope that the lion jumps towards me. When any moving object is this close to the lens, the greater the need for a very fast shutter speed. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph makes up for my countless failures. It is a credit to Kevin Richardson’s skills at his sanctuary in South Africa - he is not known as The Lion Whisperer for no reason. Native Americans faced an existential crisis.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSome tribes, of course, fought, whilst others negotiated. There was heavy loss of life on both sides and there is irony now that this period of nation building is deeply uncomfortable for many current day Americans. What created the wealthiest country in the world is not something to celebrate.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRailroads were an integral part of the Manifest Destiny and undermined the sovereignty of Native nations. Their construction threatened to destroy indigenous communities and their cultures as the railroad expanded into territories inhabited by Native Americans.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut for all that, encounters between steam trains and Native Americans were not necessarily as Hollywood has depicted. There was not much conflict and indigenous people mostly watched the railroad construction with a degree of fascination. Indeed, some found themselves drawn into a closer relationship with settlers because of the commercial opportunities that came with railroad construction. There was collaboration and often Native Americans offered protection from bandits.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e19th century artists often depicted Native Americans as passive contextual narrative in railroad images; they are present but only to frame the story, not make the story. They simply establish the scene. This was my intent one cold February morning at Horseshoe Bend on the famous Durango \u0026amp; Silverton Railroad high in the San Juan Mountains. The Native American is not on the bend to attack, he is there simply to proudly show his presence. It is for the viewer to imagine how the next five minutes unfolded.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA great deal of logistical teamwork enabled this opportunity that cold sunny morning and the result is a strong photograph. As a stark, elemental amphitheatre on which to ply one’s craft, it is perhaps without equal. I have been going back for about 20 years now and will never tire of the red earth. I won’t make it to Mars, but this will do just fine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI know this tree in the Kanaan Desert intimately - which is a rather unusual admission. It may be dead, but I fancy it will be around long after all of us; this is not a place where ill-intentioned people come. There is a deafening silence to the desert which amplifies the sense of wilderness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tree is enormous and its scale offers the chance to use space to the advantage of the frame. When I was composing the scene, I recognised that the tail of the cheetah and the structure of the tree could align a little and lend some compositional balance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis male cheetah is the biggest under the acclaimed care of conservationist Rudi and Marice Van Vuuren. They now employ 500 people in Namibia and their Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary has earned deserved acclaim. Since 1990, smart conservation efforts have resulted in the population in the country growing from 1500 to 2500 – that’s one third of the planet’s total. We have long worked with the acclaimed cheetah conservationists Rudi and Marlice van Vuuren who founded the Naankuse Sanctuary nearly 20 years ago and they partnered with us on this project in the Kanaan Desert.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph in the dunes of the Namibian desert, was taken in September 2024. I first photographed in this desert over 14 years ago and I hope I have learned a great deal since then. All the layers in this image: the textural sand, the central characters, the desert mountains and the clouds coalesce as one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy camera metadata tells me that it was taken long before most people are out of bed and yet we are a long way from the nearest building. But no one in the crew had a problem with that. There is a visual overload from these dunes at sunrise to match any location on the planet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShanina Shaik looks sensational and elevates a photograph of a cheetah in\u003cbr\u003ethe desert into something a little more special. It hadn’t properly rained in this part of the Kanaan Desert for two years, but the day we arrived for one of our most ambitious productions, it started to properly rain. You could not make this shit up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut this poor weather created an opportunity not a threat, as it always does. Although the storm cleared through the night, it was still unseasonably cold and when we arrived at the top of the sand dunes at dawn, the distant mountains were enveloped in low cloud. This is most unusual and added a whole new element to what I already knew was a visually intoxicating location. The wind had also left new textural patterns in the sand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe positioning of Cara and the cheetah on the ridge of the dunes lends a pleasing compositional balance to the picture. It was not all down to fortune and I could not have done this without the help of the Naankuse team in Namibia and in particular Rudi and Marlice Van Vuuren. It also helps that I know the dunes well; any filmmaker must make decisions quickly at sunrise in the desert. The light I needed to amplify the beauty of the content is only gifted for a brief period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe real credit goes to Cara Delevingne though, what a force of nature she is and a total professional. It is not easy walking naked in those dunes with a cheetah watching your every move.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe best pictures are authentic and can never be taken again. But telephone kiosks do not tend to play host to people of disposable moral fibre, whereas pool lounges largely do and that is why a pool table is such a good prop; it smacks of the possibility of trouble.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think if there was a book of pool table images playing to the lore of a sketchy saloon, this photograph would stand a good chance of being front cover. Who could possibly refuse an invitation for a drink and a game of pool at this bar? It has everything you need, including that vague hint of vice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCara Delevingne is so much more than just a supermodel. She is a generational talent and a force of nature. In 2024 she played Sally Bowles in Cabaret for a good 10 weeks in the West End. One critic said she played the role as well as Liza Minnelli in the 1971 movie of the same name. From a filming perspective, we are drawn to bars with depth and then it helps if the walls and ceilings are elaborately embroidered with authentic props that emphatically play to a western vibe. They need to have history and a lore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut these are not really demanding qualification rules, and we need some stronger filters. For a start, we think that the saloon must have hard liquor available at breakfast and the bar staff should greet early customers with a smile that suggests a sense of partnership throughout the day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe door policy should be accommodating to men with no cultural refinement and women with no moral compass and allow cowboy capitalists to mingle freely with outlaws, cattle wranglers and enthusiastic pole dancers. The only real restriction, is that entry is conditional on wearing a decent and well worn cowboy hat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think, however, the best cowboy bars must be in towns that are fabled cattle towns. If there is not a hint of manure in the air, at the very least, there should be some steers within a rope’s throw of the entrance. It would also help these days if Taylor Sheridan is a regular.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese new criteria materially narrow down the candidates and all roads now lead to Fort Worth, Texas. The cowboy is the most enduring symbol of America and Fort Worth is the cowboy’s spiritual home. Little wonder, therefore, that this stretch of road will host nine million visitors this year.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are few hotter areas in American real estate right now than this pocket of Texas and I sense that Taylor Sheridan has played something of a role in the growing awareness of cattle culture. The lore of the cattle markets and ranches no longer only speaks to Texans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to shoot this tableaux at first light to amplify the neon lighting in the background and create more of a visual mood. That ambition made for greater challenges with the camera, but I just hadn’t seen a picture like this before and that always energises me. The location will always be there and that forces the cameraman to push a few boundaries in the quest to be authentic. It is just not good enough to shoot the Stockyards during normal working hours. More of the same is never an option.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think the vignette plays to the vibe of Cowtown. The life imbalances are easier to consume in a modern Taylor Sheridan production than they were when lived out for real.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLouis L’Amour- the doyen of contemporary Western novels - believed that the self-image of the first cowboys was influenced by the “code of the cavalier” that emerged in 19th century writers such as Sir Walter Scott. The commitment to duty, and the sense of pride that became integral to the lore of the frontier cowboys, came from somewhere and L’Amour suggests that it came from stories and folklore passed down the ages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf he was right, novels such as Ivanhoe have played a material role in the evolution of Americana. The early cowboys were rough, wanderlust characters often possessing no moral compass, but they had a code of honour that history now looks fondly on and this has propelled the cowboy image from a shiftless, unkempt character to the noble good guy and most enduring symbol of the United States.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat extraordinary shift in perception is here to stay and that works for me. I have long been an admirer of the photographer Tommy Mangelsen whose body of work is a love letter to this pocket of America. For many years we have shared the same New York Publisher - Rizzoli - and he sets a high bar with his body of authentic images in the Tetons and beyond.   \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have a good friend in Jackson, who, for many years, has made a living by ploughing snow on private roads in the winter months. It is his business to know every road in the community and in the days before my arrival he scouted the land either side of these single-track roads for big bull moose. They are not that hard to find in the area near Kelly - especially in late November and December - but I needed to be in situ very early in the day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was never going to be easy to get a Cigar Shot as there needs to be a sense of place in any picture taken here.  Not to include the Tetons in the frame would be akin to filming in Zermatt and not including the Matterhorn. They are on a par as backdrops.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo have the Tetons as a canvas requires a high cloud or no cloud and I have always tended to prefer flat light rather than shooting with a harsh sun behind me. But there is a small window after sunrise when the sun finally hits the flats, but not in a garish way. For filmmakers, snow offers an extra character for free and that is something we have always embraced. It is a time to be in the field and not huddled by the fireplace watching movies. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis image of a large bull moose in the sage flats in Teton National Park has an emphatic sense of winter and that was my goal. It had snowed about six inches the night before and the photograph, taken around 07.30am, is elevated by the fresh snow cover and the sign of an early winter storm lifting. There is no better time to photograph than at the end of a snowfall; the flat light enhances the ethereal splendour of what the storm has left behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have learnt a great deal about moose behaviour and we know each situation is different. They can be extremely dangerous animals and should not be approached.
