2nd Phase Navajo Weaving by Treva Peshlakai
Indigo Blue
60" x 55"
Treva Peshlakia is a contemporary Navajo weaver from the Ganado, Arizona area. She specializes in recreating traditional Navajo wearing blanket patterns. This pattern is a replica of a Second Phase Wearing Blanket. These blankets, based on a striped pattern with horizontal elements was different from the First Phase Blankets which were entirely stripes.
The Second Phase Blankets were woven between 1840 and 1870, approximately. While all were different, they had the same basic patterns. One of the unique characteristics of Treva’s work is that she uses the original dyes for her red and blue that the early weavers did. The blue is from the Indigo Plant while the red is cochineal, a plant made from small beetles that are found on cactus plants in the desert Southwest.
