Original Acrylic by Thom Ross. 50" x 38"

Pat Garrett, John Poe, and Tip McKinney, riding along the Pecos River at night (to avoid detection), as they move north towards Ft. Sumner where they think that the outlaw, Billy the Kid, is hiding.  Garrett's hunch proved correct and on the night of July 14, 1881, the trio of lawmen arrived in a dark and silent Ft. Sumner.  Leaving Poe and McKinney outside, Garrett entered the bedroom of Pete Maxwell.  Waking up Maxwell, the two men began to talk is hushed tones when a figure jumped thru the still-open door of Maxwell's bedroom.  The figure walked over to Maxwell, apparently no noticing the third man in the room sitting on Maxwell's bed (as I said, it was late at night and the night was very dark).  As the figure bent over to ask Maxwell who the two strangers were who were still waiting outside, Maxwell called out, "it's him!"  Startled, the figure jumped back and realized that there was a third man in the room but unable to identify him, this mystery figure did not fire.  Garrett recognized the figure as Billy the Kid and fired a shot from his hip as he sat on the bed.  The bullet struck Billy in the heart and he collapsed to the floor....dead.
