40" x 30"
Water Media on Paper Mounted on Canvas (no frame, gallery wrap)
$3,550

I almost quit the art business in early 2021. Seemed I just couldn’t find the passion for
a while. But the down time, and a bunch of great days cruising in my Vette helped me
realize that I am an artist. It’s what I do. So, I’m back, rebooted, recalibrated, and the
ideas are coming again.
Shortly before I “hit the wall,” I had started the cowboy images on this painting and six
others, so I just needed to fill in the details on the cowboys and come up with
backgrounds. I cranked up Alan Jackson, Marty Stuart, and some oldies but goodies
rock and roll tunes, and those ideas flowed out on the heavy Arches watercolor paper I
use for my cowboy paintings. (I mount that paper on gallery-wrapped canvas and coat
it with varnish to protect the painting and finish the edges black so you can hang it as is
– or pick a frame.)
Andy Warhol’s various versions of Marilyn Monroe always make a great contrast with
my hat-down cowboys, so Marilyn turned up again in a few paintings in this last series,
including this one. I thought it was finished, but when you asked for a bit more pink
and a little more yellow, those turned out to be the exact finishing touches.
In “Sweet Nothin’s” Marilyn (in the “mural” on the wall) seems to be whispering words
of flattery in this cowboy’s ear. He’s doing his best to ignore her while he’s waiting
patiently for his girlfriend to come get him in her new pickup.
