Pam Grier to Receive the Santa Fe International Film Festival's Lifetime Achievement Award

Sorrel Sky Gallery is proud to be part of this year's celebration, once again hosting a pre-event cocktail reception as the Santa Fe International Film Festival (SFiFF) presents its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to acclaimed actress, singer, and activist Pam Grier. The honor will be presented on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe. Following the ceremony, Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and producer Kirk Ellis (Apple TV's Franklin) will host a live Q&A with Grier.
A powerhouse of talent and a pioneer for African American representation in Hollywood, Grier has captivated audiences for more than four decades. She is perhaps best known as the title character in Jack Hill's exploitation action film Foxy Brown (1974), where her powerful, triumphant physical presence offset a subversive sex appeal that set her apart from other women actors of the era. Nearly three decades later, she took the title role in Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown (1997), earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture.

"Her groundbreaking career has created a catalyst of opportunity for actresses in the industry, changing the way that roles for women have been envisioned by Hollywood writers, directors, and the actresses who bring these characters to life on screen."
Rewriting the Rules for Black Women on Screen
Grier's unforgettable breakthrough roles in Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974) centralized a powerful influence over American cinema, revolutionizing the way Black women were portrayed. She flipped the damsel-in-distress trope on its head, kicking butt and taking names in films that paved the way for many Black women actors who followed, including Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Teyana Taylor. In August of 1975, Grier made history as the first Black woman to appear on the cover of Ms. magazine. The NAACP has nominated her for ten Image Awards.
Other notable credits include The Big Doll House (1971), Sheba, Baby (1975), Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983), Escape from L.A. (1996), Mars Attacks! (1996), and Jawbreaker (1999). More recently, Grier played Kit Porter in Showtime's record-setting series The L Word, which became a blueprint for underrepresented LGBTQIA+ audiences worldwide.
A Life of Advocacy
Beyond the screen, Grier has lived a life of advocacy and activism. In 2011, she founded the Pam Grier Community Garden and Education Center, in partnership with the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum, to teach people about organic gardening, health, and nutritional education. Langston University recognized this considerable work with an honorary Doctorate of Science in Agriculture. In 2016, Harvard University honored Grier with the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal for significant contributions to African and African American history and culture.
Before her career as the beloved action hero, Grier sang backup for legendary vocalists including Bobby Womack, Jimi Hendrix, and Sly Stone. She recorded the track "Long Time Woman" for The Big Doll House, which Tarantino later used in Jackie Brown.
"To be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for sharing my gifts is profoundly meaningful," said Grier.
Previous recipients of the Santa Fe International Film Festival's Lifetime Achievement Award include Edward James Olmos, Bryan Cranston, Oliver Stone, Godfrey Reggio, Tantoo Cardinal, Shirley MacLaine, and John Sayles.
