They would ask the elders for a blessing, spend time in the sweat lodge, fast for four days, and wait for their vision. Some would have them their first time, some would not and would go again. If they didn’t have a vision of their totem, or animal helper, they would borrow the helper of their father, grandfather, or uncle.
