Fearless and Free

Acrylic on Canvas and 30" x 24" Unframed.
Designed to strike fear into the hearts of
enemies, garments like this proliferated
across the Great Plains before the
confines of reservations. Worn by fierce
mounted warriors streaking horseback
across open country, bound only by
loyalty to family and tribe, each was
imbued with the most personal of
protective medicine. Hawk bells, feathers
of eagles, and carefully dyed quills of
various birds summoned the strength of
the magnificent creatures of the sky.
Beadwork proudly identifying their
particular tribes, faux bullet holes
implying impunity, and scalp locks
gathered in battles past spoke clearly of
the success of that medicine, and the
warrior who possessed it.
