While Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth is a well-known part of the fabric of the Texas University system, its profile has certainly risen because of the
exposure it received in Taylor Sheridan’s Landman. The “horned frog” shade of purple is very in “vogue”, as indeed is the college.

TCU only has 12,000 students, which is small compared to the flagship Texas university - UT in Austin - which caters to over 50,000 , but there is great local pride in Fort Worth toward the Horned Frogs.

Sport is the accepted way for college rivalries to play out, and a minnow enjoys nothing more than an opportunity to put one over the big whale. The Longhorns of UT don’t get a great reception in a TCU bar.

There is a legendary oil saloon in the heart of the Permian Basin that is always filled with landmen and patch workers and I thought it an ideal backdrop to play to this college rivalry. “The Bar” is the drinking home of the Texas oil man and it seemed to make sense, therefore, that I played it as a TCU bar and not a UT bar.

In a tableau like this, every little detail matters and since I am in control of the
composition, the blame stops with me if there is an issue. But when a big longhorn
is thrown into a tight saloon, all bets are off; there are variables I can’t really
control and the odds are all against me. But as I always tell people, all you need is
one shot.
