Charlemagne’s Little Baubles of Deceit

This painting is based on the story of King Charlemagne, called by some the greatest of medieval kings. Only King Arthur is more revered as a Christian king. Charlemagne was kind, yet fiercely defensive of his family and empire. His exploits spawned both histories and romances. Charlemagne was profusely generous to the church. Bishops played a leading part in his councils, assemblies and administration. Perhaps this is why the woman from Rory’s dreams—someone from all walks of life—wears a crown of thorns.
