Shalah graced the cover of my most recent book “Horses”, published by TeNeues Publishing of Germany a few years ago. Shalah is an Arabian mare that I photographed at Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary in California several years ago. I set up a black backdrop in an area on the side of a covered barn, and created a temporary studio for portraits because the quality of light here is so sublime. The combination of the light, and the momentary turn of the head made this all come together.
