DURANGO, COLORADO

From Viking Fjords to the Rockies: David Yarrow Returns to Durango

Sorrel Sky Gallery welcomes the world-renowned photographer for an evening of stories behind his newest work, Tuesday, July 28, 5–8 PM.

DURANGO, CO — Sorrel Sky Gallery is delighted to welcome back world-renowned photographer David Yarrow to its Durango gallery, 828 Main Avenue, on Tuesday, July 28, from 5 to 8 PM. Fresh from a remarkable season of work abroad, Yarrow returns to a town he has long considered a creative home, and to the collectors and community who have followed his journey from the beginning.

Surrounded by his powerful large-scale images, Yarrow will speak about his recent travels through Norway, France, and Italy, sharing the vision, the logistics, and the occasional misadventure behind bringing these visual stories to life. From casting and costume to weather and light, few artists offer such candid insight into the making of cinematic photography.

This spring, Yarrow created one of the most talked-about images in the world of sport. Commissioned by the Norwegian Football Federation ahead of the country's first World Cup appearance since 1998, Yarrow photographed the full 26-man national squad, including global superstar Erling Haaland, in authentic Viking dress on a secluded fjord beach near Oslo with longships on the horizon. The image, titled The Vikings Are Coming, went viral within days, hailed by international media as perhaps the greatest team photograph ever made. True to Yarrow's philanthropic mission, proceeds from the work benefit Norwegian charities.

The Oslo shoot echoes the moment that launched Yarrow's career: at age 20, he captured the iconic image of Diego Maradona lifting the World Cup trophy in Mexico City in 1986. Forty years later, as the World Cup returned to North America, Yarrow was once again behind the lens, this time as the storyteller shaping the myth rather than the young photojournalist chasing it.

His travels did not end in Scandinavia. New work from the Côte d'Azur and the Italian countryside channels the glamour of mid-century Europe. Images made in Cannes, Portofino, and Tuscany feature vintage Ferraris, sun-drenched piazzas, and la dolce vita, all rendered in Yarrow's signature monochrome. Several of these images will be on view in Durango.

"David possesses that rare talent to utterly enthrall viewers," says Shanan Campbell, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery. "His ability as an artist, combined with his gift for visual storytelling, will pull you in and spark the imagination."
Yarrow's connection to Durango runs deep. He has returned repeatedly to shoot on location here, pairing celebrity models with the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to tell stories of the Wild West. These site-specific images have quickly sold out as collectors eagerly acquired them.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, David Yarrow is considered one of the world's best-selling photographers. Ranked among Artsy's most inquired-about artists, in the rarefied company of Warhol, Picasso, and Basquiat, he is known for evocative black-and-white images spanning wildlife, landscape, and staged narrative scenes. Deeply committed to philanthropy, Yarrow has raised more than $25 million for charitable causes since 2017, with a focus on pediatric cancer care and the natural world.

The evening is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to arrive early, as Yarrow's Durango appearances draw enthusiastic crowds. For more information or to RSVP, contact Sorrel Sky Gallery at (970) 247-3555 or visit sorrelsky.com.
