Reimagining the West: The Historical Visions of Thom Ross

SANTA FE, NM: October, 2025; Sorrel Sky Gallery invites art enthusiasts and history buffs alike to Reimagining the West, a compelling solo exhibition featuring the multidimensional works of renowned artist Thom Ross. This thought-provoking showcase opens with an artist reception on Friday, November 7, 2025, from 5 - 7 p.m. and will be on view through November 30, 2025, at the gallery's Santa Fe location, 125 W. Palace Ave.

Born in San Francisco in 1952, Thom Ross has dedicated his artistic career to challenging conventional narratives of American history. Through his masterful use of diverse media—from vivid paintings to immersive installations—Ross invites viewers to reconsider the mythologies that have shaped our understanding of the American West and its iconic figures.

"My love of history, my enjoyment in story-telling, and my passion for painting supplies as much in artistic enjoyment as it does in the contemplation of history and the people and events which shaped it," explains Ross, whose artistic vision was profoundly transformed during the centennial commemoration of the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1976.

This pivotal experience ignited Ross's commitment to portraying historical moments with nuanced complexity, a perspective evident throughout his distinguished career. His acclaimed works include "The Catch," a celebrated diorama created for the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the groundbreaking "Custer's Last Stand" (2005)—a life-sized installation featuring warriors and horses positioned at the original Battle of Little Bighorn site.

In Reimagining the West, Ross continues this exploration, presenting new works that challenge viewers to look beyond simplistic interpretations of folk heroes and formative events in American history. Each piece demonstrates his remarkable ability to bridge past and present, inviting contemporary dialogue about historical narratives that continue to influence our national identity.

Collectors and art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to meet Thom Ross during the opening reception and gain deeper insights into his creative process and historical perspectives. Private viewings are available by appointment.
