Sorrel Sky Gallery Welcomes Painter Mark Keathley Back to the Landscape

The Texas artist behind Animas Hues and Along the Animas joins collectors for an evening reception at the gallery's Durango location on September 18

DURANGO, CO: Sorrel Sky Gallery is pleased to welcome painter Mark Keathley to its Durango gallery on Friday, September 18, 2026, for an evening reception from 5–8 PM. The event brings the Texas-born artist back to the Animas River valley, a landscape that has appeared in his recent paintings, including Animas Hues, Animas View, Along the Animas, and Evening Light On Engineer.

Keathley's career spans nearly four decades and reaches from East Texas creek beds to the Wyoming high country, yet the light of Southwest Colorado holds a singular place in his catalog. For collectors in Durango, the reception offers a rare opportunity to meet the artist in the very landscape he has returned to again and again.

From a Texas Attic to a National Following

Born in 1963 on his family's cattle farm in East Texas, Keathley discovered his mother's oil painting box in the attic of the family home at age eleven and never stopped painting. His work earned the Popular Vote Award twice at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Art Show in Waco, recognition at the Old West Museum Show in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and the selection of his painting Quiet Encounter for the National Wild Turkey Federation's 2011 core art program. Today he has more than 100 published limited edition images, gallery representation across the country, and more than a decade of teaching through the Victoria Art League in Texas.

Painting Built to Still the Viewer

Keathley blocks in each composition quickly in acrylic, resolving light and structure while the medium allows easy revision, then builds the finished surface in oil. The result is the soft-edged, warmly lit atmospheric glow collectors recognize as his signature. The purpose behind the technique is one the artist states plainly: "I want my paintings to inspire people to be still, to listen to that quiet voice, and then rise up assured that they are a part of something bigger than their schedule."

An Evening with Mark Keathley takes place Friday, September 18, 2026, from 5–8 PM at Sorrel Sky Gallery, Durango, Colorado. The reception is open to the public. New and recent works by the artist will be on view and available for acquisition.
