Jeremy Salazar and Jackson Clark Showcase at First Friday Art Walk in Santa Fe, NM

June, 2025

SANTA FE, NM: April 14, 2025; Prepare to be mesmerized as Sorrel Sky Gallery proudly presents Threads of Heritage, an extraordinary collaborative exhibition featuring the groundbreaking works of celebrated Navajo artist Jeremy Salazar alongside weaving expert Jackson Clark. This powerful showcase opens with an artist reception on Friday, June 6, 2025, from 5 - 7 p.m. and will be on view through June 30, 2025, at the gallery’s Santa Fe location, 125 W. Palace Ave.

"We, as Native peoples, know our own stories best, the ones who lived it, the storytellers." These profound words from Jeremy Salazar capture the essence of this unprecedented artistic gathering, where ancient traditions meet contemporary expression.

Born and raised on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico, self-taught artist Jeremy Salazar brings his signature fusion of abstract and realism, portraying the depth and vibrancy of Diné experiences through electrifying color palettes and intricately detailed facial expressions. His canvases don't merely depict subjects – they breathe life into generations of storytelling.

"I see my work as an ongoing blessing," shares Salazar, "connecting me and my art with the gallery, with collectors, and with my community." This connection philosophy drives his artistic mission as he collaborates with tribes nationwide, preserving oral histories through visual narratives that resonate with authenticity and cultural pride.

Complementing Salazar's vivid paintings, revered Navajo weaving expert Jackson Clark presents masterpieces that embody centuries of tradition. According to Navajo legend, Spider Woman bestowed the sacred art of weaving upon the Navajo people. Clark's exceptional collection of textiles honors this divine lineage while showcasing the sophisticated techniques that have made Navajo weavings among the most coveted art forms in the world.

Threads of Heritage offers a rare opportunity to witness a self-taught painter nearing the height of his creative powers and an expert who celebrates the resilience and beauty of Indigenous artistry. Collectors and enthusiasts alike will have the opportunity to acquire these exceptional works and engage directly with the artists during the opening reception.

This landmark exhibition runs from June 1 through June 30. Private viewings are available by appointment.

Jackson Clark
Jackson Clark is a nationally recognized expert in Native American art and Navajo weaving. With more than four decades of experience, he regularly talks to museums and organizations nationwide.

Navajo Weaving
The Navajo weave on an upright loom; the wool is washed, spun, and sometimes dyed. A weaving can take several months to complete; some take more than a year. Navajo weaving is constantly changing; in the first part of the 20th Century, white traders influenced the designs and sizes of Navajo rugs. Patterns and styles of weavings became identified with particular Trading Posts, i.e., Ganado, Teec Nos Pos, Two Grey Hills, and Crystal. Recent trends in Navajo weaving emphasize the independence of the weaver. Many of the best Navajo weavers are elderly, and fewer younger Navajo are taking up this fine art.
