Celebrating Artistic Excellence: All Artist Group Show at Sorrel Sky Gallery

Friday, August 15, 5-7:30 PM

As Santa Fe prepares for one of its most celebrated weekends, Sorrel Sky Gallery presents an extraordinary showcase that embodies the very essence of artistic excellence. Our All Artist Group Show opens Friday evening, offering visitors the rare opportunity to experience the full spectrum of creativity from our distinguished roster of established artists—all under one roof.

This isn't just another gallery reception; it's a celebration of the diverse artistic voices that define contemporary Western and Native American art. From the moment you step through our doors at 125 W. Palace Avenue , you'll encounter a carefully curated collection that represents decades of artistic mastery and innovation.

A Constellation of Artistic Talent

Star Liana York's expressive bronzes anchor this remarkable exhibition, their powerful forms capturing the spirit and movement that have made her one of the most sought-after sculptors in the contemporary Western art world. Each piece tells a story, whether it's the grace of a running horse or the quiet strength of a standing figure. Star will demonstrate her process and engage with collectors.

The show features an exceptional array of jewelry artistry, opening the night before with an unveiling of new works from Nighthorse and continuing on Friday with Victoria Adams's stunning designs that incorporate natural forms she observes. A member of the Southern Cheyenne/Arapaho tribe whose traditional name is "He On E Va," meaning "Woman Who Lights the Pipe," Adams juxtaposes precious metals, gemstones, and fossils with plant, anima,l and human forms, creating pieces that honor both her heritage and contemporary elegance.

Darryl Dean and Rebecca Begay collaborate on jewelry designs using traditional techniques inspired by contemporary life. As Navajo artists, their culture has a powerful influence on their jewelry, telling stories that allow ancient ceremonies and chants to live on. Darryl Dean is adept at stonework and is one of the few true masters at tufa casting, while Rebecca applies her design sense and delicate hand to floral carving. Winners of the Best of Show award at the 2009 Santa Fe Indian Market, their work represents the highest level of traditional craftsmanship.

Robert Rivera's innovative gourd art brings an unexpected dimension to the exhibition, transforming humble natural materials into sophisticated sculptural forms. Possibly the first to use gourds as a fine art medium in a contemporary southwestern fashion, Rivera creates medicine men chanters, Navajo warriors, Hopi butterfly maidens, and masks of every size and description, each piece adorned with materials ranging from turquoise and horsehair to African beads and turkey feathers.

Beyond the Expected

Our roster extends to include Thom Ross, whose historically-informed narratives challenge viewers to look beyond simplistic myths of the American West. Born in San Francisco in 1952, Ross has dedicated his artistic career to exploring and redefining American historical narratives, focusing on historical folk heroes and pivotal moments that shaped the nation's identity. His work demonstrates a masterful understanding of historical context while challenging viewers' perspectives on American history.

David Knowlton contributes his precise, idealized paintings of rural structures, trains, and architectural elements. His work blends the real and the ideal, emphasizing abstract elements like color relationships and the negative spaces surrounding objects. As he explains, "My paintings are very precise. I pare things down to the essentials, and I pay a lot of attention to the negative, open spaces."

Lisa Gordon's bronze sculptures breathe new life into equestrian art, showing horses balanced on spheres, walking through hoops, or bouncing on springs. These powerful creatures in whimsical scenes serve as metaphors for the human experience, demonstrating the balance between having fun and giving life purpose. Her deeply-rooted love for horses, developed through years of riding and training, infuses each piece with authenticity and emotional depth.

The possibility of seeing new works from Maura Allen, Arlene LaDell Hayes, and Douglas Magnus adds an element of discovery to the evening. Maura Allen's work centers on the American West—both real and romanticized, magically weaving past and present, Old West and new, making her a perfect fit for this comprehensive show.

What sets this exhibition apart is our commitment to presenting art that doesn't just hang on walls or sit on pedestals—it tells stories. Whether you're a seasoned collector or someone just beginning to explore the world of Western and Native American art, this show offers something transformative.

The timing couldn't be more perfect. As Indian Market consistently offers a dynamic and event-filled weekend, serving as a major highlight of the summer season, our All Artist Group Show provides the ideal introduction to a weekend celebrating artistic excellence and cultural heritage.
