The Coal Mine Mesa weavings originated at the trading post of that name near Tuba City, Arizona. The weaving got its second name, “Raised Outline”from the fact that the designs were made by alternating different colors of weft yarn and at the end of a color run the weft thread was transported back over two warp threads producing a raised edge to the pattern.

The early weavings of this style were primarily black, grey and white, but later weavers began to use other colors from vegetal and aniline dyes to create more exciting images. Teec Nos Pos designs in a raised outline style are often referred to as “New Lands” weavings.
