The period between the time the Navajo quit weaving wearing blankets until the time that the Navajo Rug took their place is referred to as the Transitional period. It ran roughly from 1885-1910. During this period, the different rug weaving areas had not become established and weavers who had spent their entire lives making wearing blankets were having to adopt their patterns to floor weaving.
Transitional weavings tend to have a softer feel as women were still using the same weaving techniques that they had used to create blankets. By the 1915-20 period, the weaving techniques and patterns had adapted to the rug market.
