Parallel Visions: Midwest Sculptor & Western Silk Artist
The Natural World Through the Eyes of Mark Dziewior & Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey
FEBRUARY 28, 2025
Sorrel Sky Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Parallel Visions: Midwest Sculptor & Western Silk Artist, a captivating dual exhibition featuring new work by artist Mark Dziewior and debuting the vivid paintings on canvas and silk by Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey, a new artist we welcome to the Sorrel Sky family. The show will debut with a special First Friday artist reception with both artists in attendance on April 4 from 5 to 7 pm and continue through April 30, 2025.
This unique exhibition brings together two distinctive artists who celebrate the natural world through different mediums and regional influences. Mark Dziewior's tactile wildlife sculptures, influenced by his Wisconsin upbringing, invite viewers to experience the spiritual connection between humans and animals. Nancy Dunlap Cawdrey's vibrant silk paintings capture the breathtaking expansiveness of Montana's landscapes and Western culture.
"This exhibition represents a fascinating convergence of artistic paths that began in different regions but share a profound connection to nature," says gallery owner, Shanan Campbell. "Both artists transform their unique geographical influences into works that evoke emotion and wonder."
Mark Dziewior, who was raised in central Wisconsin among woods and bluffs, creates pieces that capture the essence and spirit of wildlife with remarkable detail and expression. "My work has evolved to a whole new level through sculpture," Dziewior explains. "I can encourage people to touch, hold, and have a tactile experience with sculpture that I couldn't with my paintings." His works reflect a lifetime of meaningful encounters with animals, from the fawn he bottle-fed at a wildlife rescue to the cougar cub he once held.
Nancy Dunlap Cawdrey’s studio is nestled near Glacier National Park. She brings her internationally-influenced perspective to Western art through her masterful use of French dyes on crepe de chine silk. Her dynamic representations of tipis, bold cowgirls, commanding wildlife, and vibrant florals showcase her innovative approach to traditional subjects. "You cannot live in Montana without having breathless moments of awe every day," Cawdrey notes. "The skies are endless inspiration for color, clouds, thunder, rain, and brilliant azure days."
