For many rural people, the horse remained an important necessity despite the coming of the automobile. Those living on the Navajo reservation still had great distances with bad roads to travel with burdens meant for market, cowboys had many roadless rough miles to travel over the range to care for cattle herds, and fields still needed to be plowed with equines or oxen for those who could afford tractors and had no access to gas. Often a farmer's ability to survive relied on them, despite the coming of mechanization, which was slow to reach ranches & farms.
